The Census Records - Ireland

The Census is a record of the population of Ireland taken in 1901 and 1911.

They contain information such as names, addresses, ages, occupations, marital status and literacy.

They are more accessible than parish records as they are available on the national archives website free of charge.

The 1901 and 1911 Census

The 1901 and 1911 Census provides an insight into life in Ireland in the early part of the Twentieth Century such as occupation and average family size in urban and rural areas.

To search the Census at least one of the following fields must be answered on the national archives website – year; surname; forename; county; DED; town land; gender.

The Census can be used as the first point of call in family research with the provision of a name or area.

It can be also be used for a demographic overview of a particular area on a given year.
