Peace be with you from the Risen Lord! There has been much discussion lately – at the Vision Team meeting, by

the Worship and Music Team, and at Choir practice on Thursday nights – that has revolved around music, and in particular singing – why we sing, what we sing, and how much we sing.

I often find myself in a very small minority when it comes to proclaiming the benefits of

music and singing. To give me some support, here’s a quote from Martin Luther on the subject: “We know that music is odious and unbearable to the demons. Indeed I plainly judge,

and do not hesitate to affirm, that except for theology, music alone produces what otherwise only theology can do, namely, a calm and joyful disposition.

Manifest proof of this is the fact that the devil, the creator of saddening cares and dis-

quieting worries, takes flight at the sound of music almost as he takes flight at the word of the-ology.”

Now much of the recent discussion centers on ELW – Evangelical Lutheran Worship -

and its ‘newer music’ – at least newer to us at Centennial. How do we learn to sing some of these ‘Newer’ treasures of the Church? Well, first, let’s dispel the notion that we’ve thrown out all the music that we’ve come to know and love.

Lutheran Book of Worship – the green hymn book from 1978, contained 569 hymns and

canticles. Most of this music is still contained in today’s Pew Resource (red book), Evangelical Lutheran Worship! When I began at Centennial in 2015, the congregation was singing less than half of the hymns from LBW. So when Jack chooses music for worship, we often hear comments about how it’s new – “I liked LBW better!” Yet in reality, the piece of music in question actually was included in the last hymnbook!

While Evangelical Lutheran Worship has retained most of this music, it has also added

about 250 new hymns and songs from different faith traditions, and from different cultures around the world. Furthermore, we are open to music that is not in ELW.

We’re committed to exploring new ways to learn our worship music. Jack has agreed to

do some sessions after worship in the coming months, open to everyone. And we welcome your suggestions on how we introduce new hymns and songs, but in the meantime, continue to sing with confidence and as Luther said, “Make the devil take flight!”

From Director of Music Ministry, Jack Charles

Lutheran Church Music

Part 2 – Hymns

The Lutheran Church observes a three-year cycle of assigned readings from the Bible. We are now in the second cycle, year B. The church publishes a yearly booklet, “Sundays and Seasons” describing the meaning of each Sunday and of other worship services. It suggests several appropriate selections for the Opening Hymn, Psalmody, Sermon Hymn, Communion Hymn and Closing Hymn. After reading through the description of the Sunday and the suggested hymns I choose from each of the four hymn sections. I also choose a psalm setting and a setting of the liturgy. I then submit my suggestions to the pastor and the members of the Music and Worship team. I am happy to have them contribute and alter the selections as they see fit. Our red hymnal, “Evangelical Lutheran Worship” contains10 settings of the liturgy plus 87 more suggestions for the various sections of the liturgy. There are 654 hymns and spiritual songs. With a large selection of the German and Scandinavian Hymns of our heritage, you will find the much-loved English and American hymns of serious composers. There are also American and African American hymns and a wonderful selection of folk hymns from all over the world. Why is there so much music in our Sunday worship service? We know that there is not this much music in the services of most other denominations. The reason is that the spoken word (reading of the Bible lessons, prayers and the sermon) express what we were meant to learn and take away to help us in our walk of faith. The power of music is its ability to help us remember what has been said. Research has proven that music has an amazing power to help us learn and remember what we have heard. Can there be too much music? A better question is “can we learn and remember too much of what our wonderful services attempt to teach us?” If you do not know one of the selections, following the words as they are sung is perhaps more helpful than struggling with unfamiliar music. You may even be ready to sing along by the time we reach the last stanza.

Birth Announcement

Congratulations to Dave and

Karen Winning on the birth of their granddaughters, Julia

Renee and Corinne Elizabeth, on Monday, April 2, 2018. The

proud parents are Emily and

Travis Longwell. May God hold these new little ones in His hands and bless Julia and

Corinne throughout their lives.

In Good Hands As Jesus prepared his disciples for his departure, they were full of questions — “Where are you going? How will we know the way there? Would you please just show us the Father?” — and not very satisfied with his answers. So Jesus promised to send them “another Helper” (John 14:16, ESV). And we can almost hear them protesting, like kids bemoaning a favorite coach’s retirement or church members grieving a beloved pastor’s call to serve elsewhere: “Oh, great. Someone new for us to get to know. It won’t be the same. It won’t be you.” Except … the word another has two forms in Greek: “another just like this one” and “another, different version.” And when the author of John translated Jesus’ Aramaic into Greek, the first definition was the accurate one. Jesus was assuring his disciples they’d be in good hands, at peace and secure because the new Helper — the Holy Spirit — would be another just like him.
