Igniting Imaginations Since 1983! The Center for Gi f ted and Midwest Torrance Center for Creat iv i tyFounded in 1983, The Center for Gifted offers programs, workshops, research, individual conferences, and other services to children, parents, teachers, and community reflecting creativity and academic rigor. With a variety of offerings throughout the year, the Center’s focus is to challenge students to think more openly, perceptively, and with greater depth. The Center utilizes creative materials, activities, and strategies expressing critical and creative thinking to advance the intellectual, artistic, and ethical growth of participants.

Since 2013, it has been the privilege of The Center for Gifted to serve as the Midwest Torrance Center for Creativity. The Center subscribes to creativity as the highest form of mental functioning, a framework initiated by Paul Torrance, an international pioneer in education. His Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development at the University of Georgia is internationally known as a service, research and instructional center focused on creative potential. Our association with the Torrance Center in Georgia reflects that framework as an effective catalyst for the success and progress of every student student who attends our programs and workshops.

Fall 201423 Wondrous Workshops will be held on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the Chicago area for children and young people, grades 1 - 12, with a focus on science and STEM, as well as Harry Potter, historic games, and a new course in creative baking.

Eligibility for Winter 2015Bright, motivated students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through 8th grades for the 2014/15 school year, from any educational setting, whether public, private, parochial, or home school, may apply. PreK students should be 4 years old by January 1, 2015.

New students, who never have attended a CFG program, must be recommended by teachers. A completed and signed recommendation form (see below or print one from our website) must be submitted with application or mailed, faxed, or emailed (to [email protected]) separately.

Returning students do not require teacher recommendations. They are eligible upon our timely receipt of their applications.

Applicants need not have qualified for advanced programming at their schools; test scores are not the sole criterion for our programs. Although our students generally rank at or above the 95th percentiles in some areas, we recognize and discern the great variety of talents and abilities that children express.

As a general reference, please peruse the list at right; ideal candidates typically manifest many of these characteristics during their preprimary, primary, or elementary school years. If uncertain about their child’s eligibility, parents are welcome to request a conference with the CFG Director, Joan Franklin Smutny.
