Let’s Go Fishing!

Spring is in the air, and so is the pollen! This time of year always reminds me of the sound of bass chasing bait fish late in the evening along the banks of a private pond. This gives me an itch for the feel of the tap tap of a bass picking up my Texas rigged plastic lizard.

It all started as a child when my mom took my brother and me fishing with a cane pole, worms, Ritz crackers and Vienna sausage! We would go with Mrs. Etha Lee Brown. It was in these moments my brother and I caught fishing fever. It was so bad that at one time my brother Robbie had slipped over to the golf course in our back yard to fish in the pond and mom asked me to go call him for supper. Upon my arrival he was catching fish so of course we both had to stay. It was a sign from Heaven, fish don’t eat! Of course mom had to come get us both.

This lure of the fishing fever was so strong that even the first time I brought my girlfriend Tamara home from Emmanuel College for the first visit

with my family we took her fishing. We were on a riverbank and I had just baited her cane pole with a juicy cluster of earthworms. I then turned back to bait my own when I heard a commotion. Upon checking to be sure the ladies were alright I saw my mom with that freshly baited glob of earthworms

stuck to the lens of her eyeglasses! Tamara had wormed the woman who would eventually become her mother in law in spite of that day’s incident.

As I write this article I admit I do have fishing fever, not only for the pond but also for the souls of men, women, boys and girls. As I shared on Vision Day I believe the

Lord is calling the Body of Christ and in particular the South Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church to especially and intentionally focus on our communities in 2013.

Most of us fish with one line at a time. The Bible in Luke 5 tells us of a Jesus encounter where Peter was fishing all night but had not caught a fish. How exhausting it is to labor so long and hard and not

see even the smallest harvest. Often in ministry leaders get burnt out not because of not working hard enough rather for working relentlessly and catching no fish. Jesus came along and told Peter to try again but gave him one simple instruction that changed everything. Peter overcame the first reaction of but we’ve tried already and it didn’t work. In obedience he tried again and with that one simple word from the Lord caught such a harvest of fish that he couldn’t bring it in by himself. He couldn’t bring it in with the help of the other laborers in his boat. He had to call for other boats to come help.

Think about these truths regarding this story:Peter had to just get one simple instruction from the Lord and everything about his harvest changed! It wasn’t a lack of a work ethic it was his obedience to the word of the Lord.

Peter used a net not one string. Dr. James O. Davis in his book, How To Make Your Net Work tells the story of a statement by Dr. Adrian Rogers. “A net is a lot of little strings tied together. Unless you have the tying of those strings together, you won’t have a net. You can’t catch much with one little string, but you can catch a lot with a net.”

First, can you agree with me that the Holy Spirit grant each of us an outbreak of fishing fever for the lost in our families, neighborhood, workplaces, friends, and communities? May He anoint our eyes to see those who are hurting around us each day.

Page 5: The Challenge Spring Edition 2013

THE CHALLENGE MAGAZINE 5

May we hear one simple instruction from the Lord that changes a fruitless boat into one overcome by the blessing of harvest!

I fish one line at a time because I’m not desperate for fish. I enjoy the fishing aspect of the hunt. I don’t eat the fish I catch, I throw them back. In the Kingdom we must be about net fishing. One string can impact the harvest one at a time which is of value but if we really get serious about catching fish we’ll need to tie our string to other strings to make a net. Who is it the Lord is trying to tie you to? What if our churches really allowed the knitting of the Spirit to happen? What if we functioned as the well joined body of Christ on local, conference, general and global levels? What if the harvest was so great we actually were willing to work with other boats? Other churches, other denominations and groups to be sure the harvest was reached in our community? I think God is calling us to this. May we not be guilty of saying we’ve already tried!

As we enjoy this spring may the Lord help us to realize a great catch of fish for His glory. Let’s Go Fishing!

DiscipleshipMinistries 21 Century LEADership

“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” – John C. Maxwell

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

“Leaders instill in their people a hope for success and a belief in themselves. Positive leaders empower people to accomplish their goals.” – Unknown

Influence, Action and Empowerment is LEADership! There are three individuals that I would like to honor that have recently been acknowledged by their peers as being an example in influencing others with positive leadership.

The South Carolina Conference Discipleship Ministries Team chose Mr. Ralston Barfield for the Karl W. Bunkley Teacher of the Year Award (2012) because we were so impressed for not only one but twenty‑two nomination letters from Ralston’s church, Matthews Tabernacle.

It was impressive to see how Ralston touched each individual in such a way that there was a dominating theme that confirmed he truly is a great teacher, servant and leader. Here are a few quotes from Ralston’s church family.

“He is always reading his Bible, books, research history and current events to be effective and up to date. He also has a consecrated prayer life.”

“He leads by example in the church and community by visiting, witnessing, he lives by example and always carries a smile or word of encouragement and wisdom for those who need it. I also believe he lives a life of holiness.”

“He accomplishes the goal of reaching the lost and making disciples with his knowledge, outgoing personality, smile and presence of the spirit. Young

people and the lost find it easy to talk to Brother Ralston and feel at ease to open up to him with difficult questions. He is always willing to be a mentor and pray.”

“I was a new born Christian…He believed in me when no one else did.”

Mr. Ralston Barfield has touched many and continues to influence people today by living his life “OUT LOUD”. He not only received the Karl W. Bunkley Teacher of the Year Award from the South Carolina Conference Discipleship Ministries, he also received the National Sunday School Teacher of the Year Award. This award was presented by Bishop Tommy McGhee, our National Discipleship Ministries Director.

“Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.” – Albert Schweitzer

John Andrew Martin was also honored to receive the Children’s Pastor of the Year Award because of his dedication to God, the children and his church, Canaan Land Ministries.

John C Maxwell said “a leader is one who knows the way, goes the

way and shows the way.”

Francois Fenelon stated “we must truly serve those whom we appear to command, we must bear with gentleness and patience, and lead them in the way to heaven.”

John Martin is endeavoring to show the way to the children he serves through Christ like gentleness and patience. Here are some comments from his Canaan Land Ministries’ family.

“He is always there, has his lessons ready. The children learn a lot. John has a way with the children and they listen to him because they love him and they

Page 7: The Challenge Spring Edition 2013

know they can count on him.”

“John reaches out to the community and invites people to church. The church family thinks he is awesome! He inspires us. Wish more were like him.”

He teaches the children to talk to their family and friends about God and His love and to invite others to come listen and hear about how wonderful the Lord is.”

John has proven himself to be an example for Christ like leader to his church and community. The South Carolina Conference Discipleship Ministries congratulates John Andrew Martin on being chosen to be the Children’s Pastor of the Year (2012).

“The authority by which the Christian leader leads is not power but love, not force but example, not coercion but reasoned persuasion. Leaders have power, but power is safe only in the hands of those who humble themselves to serve.” – John Stott

The final Award of Excellence that was given went to Mr. Donnie Lockman for Royal Rangers of the Year. He was nominated by the members from his church which also happens to be, Canaan Land Ministries.

“..If you don’t have a minute for God, you don’t have a minute for anything.” – Donnie Lockman

“A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

“To convert somebody go and take them by the hand and guide them.” – Thomas Aquinas

Here are some comments from those whom Mr. Lockman gives his life to:

“He is a special teacher that God shows dynamic power through.”

“This man led me to God many years ago, not by pressuring me but by inviting me to church and telling

me that he was saving a chair for me.”

“When we go camping, he stays up all night by the camp fire for 2 or 3 days never letting it go out. If any kid wants to stay up and talk about changing their life, he is always there.”

After loosing his leg in an accident, he never lets you know how much pain he is in….when building our church, to be a one legged man, he outworked two men half his age.”

“All the kids love and respect him.”

“He has encouraged people and has helped make an impact on their life.”

Jerry Farwell said “whenever God has a great task, God raises up a man of equal greatness for that task.”

“It takes more than a busy church, a friendly church, or even an evangelical church to impact a community for Christ. It must be a church ablaze, led by leaders who are ablaze for God.” – Wesley L. Duewel

Our Conference is blessed with men and women who are being raised up with “Greatness” to accomplish “Great Things for our Lord”.I have mentioned three, Mr. Ralston Barfield, Mr. John Andrew Martin and Mr. Donnie Lockman that are doing 21 Century ministry with EXCELLENCE! May God Almighty continue to use them and us as instruments of His Expression in this Present – Future!

“A spiritual leader will first and foremost, have a calling from God. His work will not be his profession, but his calling.” – Zac Poonen

100 Years in Africa

100 Years In Africa

On February 27th Annette and I left for South Africa to celebrate 100 years of IPHC Ministries in Africa. What a great time of celebration as people from all over Africa came as well as people from the United States. It has been estimated that there were 6,000 to 7,000 people in attendance at this celebration under the big tent in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our hearts were truly touched as they celebrated the past, thanked God for the present and then begin to anticipate the next 100 years. There was the passing of the torch from the older generation to the younger generation as they anticipate God doing great things for Africa in the future.

While there I had the privilege to preach at Christian Heritage Church in Krugersdorp. This is the church that Brother Jimmy Gardner, the father of Talmadge and Derrick Gardner founded and pastored for many years.

Please pray for Africa that God will bless the next 100 years, if He should tarry, and that great revival will break out in Africa.

CHURCH PLANTING FUTURE

Another thing of special importance that came from our January meeting is that we want to focus on planting a church in Charleston, SC. Charleston has a

population of around 120,083. It is the second largest city in South Carolina. In 2011 Charleston was ranked #1 as the top American travel destination, it was ranked #3 as one of the world’s best cities for travel in the world and ranked #2 as the world’s best city in the United States and Canada.

This will take funds which we do not have so if you would like to give you can send in contributions to the South Carolina Conference earmarked, Charleston Church Plant. Please help us pray that the Lord will not only supply the funds but will also send us the church planter for this project.

Gone are the days of mere meetings in the SCIPHC WM. No longer do we simply gather. Instead, we gather and plan, we strategize, we seek the heart of the Father and oh, do we worship. Ladies gathered in the

Conference Dining Hall on a beautiful Saturday morning for a day of training that would set the stage for a “Truly Amazing” year in our Women’s Ministries! Our theme was taken from Holley Gerth’s book, “You Are Already Amazing”.

The meeting began with a time of prayer that declared and released the truly amazing events that we know God wants to take place in each

lady’s life in the year of 2013. Woman after woman took their neighbor by the hand creating one unified, unbroken force advancing together; and, throughout the building, prayers filled the atmosphere. Total agreement was made that each lady would experience truly the one amazing event in her life that would gloriously manifest in her ministry.

Hearts and minds were now ready for a word from the Lord. Direction and encouragement was given from Director, Jeana Altman from Exodus 3:19-22 (The Message) which states, “I know that the king of Egypt won’t let you go unless forced to, so I’ll intervene and hit Egypt where it hurts—oh, my miracles will send them reeling!—after which they’ll be glad to send you off. I’ll see to it that this people get a hearty send-off by the Egyptians—when you leave, you won’t leave empty-handed! Each woman will ask her neighbor and any guests in her house for objects of silver and gold, for jewelry and extra clothes; you’ll put them on your sons and daughters. Oh, you’ll clean the Egyptians out!” What an awesome moment of encouragement the ladies received! Excitement permeated the air with the knowledge that this would be a year of miracles for each one of them…that this was the start of a year where SC conference women would be used specifically in God’s purpose and will.

Each lady was given challenges to take throughout the year, with one of the first being to find the truly amazing gift God has placed in her life. Once found, then she was encouraged to step into the door that was being

Other events will include supporting our missionaries (Christmas for Missions and Blanche L King Scholarship fund), Feast of Ingathering which includes our Bible Colleges, and Falcon Children’s Home. We had a successful year last year, but we are looking for a “double portion” of support for each of these ministries in the year 2013! With everyone’s help, we will exceed all goals and possibilities.

A special thank you goes out to all that made this meeting successful. The SCIPHC WM board: Jeana Altman, Lynn Hood, Myrlee Powers, Pat Catledge, Linda Parnell, Roxie Lewis, and Tamara Amos, and the District Directors: Tanya McCall, Glenda Shank, Dolly Lewis, Michelle Turner, Vicki Goins, Myrlene Blackwell, Linda Jannetta, Linda Quick, and Donna Causey.

Jeana Altman &Rev. Susan Todd

opened for her, so the work God placed her in could be completely developed and shared with others. New things will develop on the horizon for each of our WM on a local level, district level, and conference level if we are obedient to God’s Word and direction.

But we didn’t stop there…the bar was raised and the challenge to fulfill the IPHC WM C4 mission was delivered. The following is from our national director’s manual: At IPHC Women's Ministries we have the resources to help conferences and local congregations release women to make a difference. We encourage IPHC women around the globe to join us in our C4 Mission: CONNECT women of all ages and cultures through fellowship and service. CULTIVATE positive relationships that will provide opportunities for discipleship.

CELEBRATE what God is doing in and through women. CREATE an atmosphere where women can be released into their gifting.

Through thorough explanation and encouragement of the C4 Mission, ladies were shown how easy it is to become a “Diamond” WM in the SC Conference. By faith, we are believing for increase and looking expectantly for an overflow of excitement and involvement this year from all ladies in the conference.

Throughout the year, our ladies will be celebrating the events during each quarter of the year with Women’s Ministries’ month beginning in March. We ask all leaders and members of the SCIPHC and others to join in on our celebrations of each of the events! One of our first missions will be to introduce a Next Generational Leader to be appointed on the Conference level and local level. These younger ladies will be mentored in the routines and works of WM.

It seems like it was only yesterday when 2013 began and here it is already Spring. Time has a way of passing us by when we are busy.

On January 22, 2013 the South Carolina Conference Evangelism Committee met in Lake City. One of the things that emerged from our meeting is that we want to see 1,000 souls saved in the South Carolina Conference in 2013. We are not talking about souls that may be saved on a church mission trip but 1,000 souls that are saved in the local church. We believe that the local church is in a community to be a light and that through our local churches if we pray and work hard we can see a thousand souls saved this year.

With that in mind, why is it that we are not reaching the unchurched or more specifically why is it that we are not seeing people saved in our churches on a regular basis? Here are a few suggestions:

Spiritual Lethargy: We have gone to sleep and seem to have no energy in reaching the lost. It’s as if we think we have a long time in which to reach the lost so we will just take it easy until a better or later time. There is no sense of urgency. Spiritual lethargy is living in disobedience to the command of our Lord to reach the lost. It takes place when we fail to obey Him.

Growing Inclusivism: One of the faster-growing belief systems today is pluralism (all religions lead to God). A variation of pluralism called inclusivism is a dangerous doctrine that is gaining momentum in many American seminaries, Christian colleges, and churches. This view affirms that Jesus is the only way of salvation, but he can be found in other "good" religions. There is a subtle but growing belief among many Christians that somehow "good" followers will make it to heaven outside of a true Christian conversion.

Growing Disbelief in Hell: Those who truly have a desire to reach the unchurched have a burden to see people make it into heaven, but they also desire to see them escape the wrath of an eternal hell. Denying the existence of hell undermines the urgency of placing one's faith in Christ.

Busyness: Perhaps one of Satan's most effective strategies is to get us so busy that we fail to do that which is such a high biblical priority. We can be deluded into complacency about the lostness of humanity around us. The unchurched are waiting for you to tell them about Jesus. They need to be on your to-do list. What priority do you give to reaching the lost?

Fear of Rejection: One in four unchurched persons will be resistant to faith discussions. But nearly four out of ten of the unchurched will be receptive to your concern for their eternity, and more than one out three will simply be neutral to your attempts.

Simply stated, fear of rejection is unfounded. The few with an antagonistic attitude are not rejecting your personally; their anger is merely a reflection of something in their past.

A Desire to Be Tolerant: The message of the gospel, in some senses, is intolerant. The great concern is that many Christians are unwilling to take a narrow view because they do not want to be labeled as intolerant. But Jesus never waivered in His insistence that He is the only way to the one and only true God.

Failure to Invite: When is the last time you invited an unchurched person to church? When is the last time you offered to take a person to church, or, at the very least, meet him or her at church? It's a simple gesture, yet so few Christians do it.

I know that there are many more reasons why we are not reaching the unchurched/lost but these are a few

We have just concluded our Great Commission Meals and what a great time it was with about 548 people in attendance. Annette and I really enjoyed traveling to each district and sharing a meal with you as we celebrated your giving for 2012 and cast a vision for 2013. Thank you for helping our Conference give $1,041,055.12 in total giving for 2012. This year we want to put special emphasis on supporting our Missionaries, especially our South Carolina Conference Missionaries. Our South Carolina Conference Missionaries are: Kundael and Yasinta Mrema (Tanzania), Debra Lybrand (Indonesia), Joshua Ben and Teresa King (Africa), Tony and Patti Guasco (Portugal), Tim and Beth Salley (Southeast Asia), Ben and Marianne Janssen (Eastern Europe), Gailya List (Kenya), and Jonathan and Elishya Cook (Panama). Please help us to make sure that our Missionaries will be able to stay on the field and not have to worry about their support.

You will notice on your Conference Calendar that we listed one GO Rally on November 9, 2013. We will not have one rally but will go back to the individual districts and have GO Rallies in each one during the month of September, please refer to you calendar for those dates. More details about the time and place will be coming later. Thank you for giving $376,518.39 for Global Outreach in 2012. Please help us to break our all-time giving record in 2013 by helping us reach our goal of $460,000. The deadline for GO offering to be in the office will be December 16, 2013 by 12 noon.

Each year we emphasize a special project while receiving the Global Outreach Offering. This year our special project will be our church plant in Charleston, SC. So, while raising your GO Offering if you have extra that you want to contribute it can go to the Charleston Church Plant.

Listed on the following pages are the first, second and third place giving in each district for total giving and GO giving in 2012:

to hopefully get us to the point that we start thinking seriously about reaching the unchurched. I read that we only reach one person for Christ each year for every 85 church members in the United States. My prayer is that that statistic will turn around for the South

Carolina Conference and that this will be the year that we really focus on winning the lost.

During the 2014 Camp Meeting we plan to unveil our “2nd Wall Of Remembrance”. As we near this event, we are encouraging our churches as well as our church

families to honor and recognize members of their families, former pastors or anyone that has had an impact upon their lives. This is one way to keep their memory alive and ever before us.

The cost of the tiles remain as they were in 2010, only $ 250.00 each. And if you would prefer, this amount can be paid in two installments of $ 125.00 each. If you would like to have a copy of our brochures, you may contact the Conference Office.

We also have copies of our “2012 South Carolina Conference Directory” available as well as copies of “Our First 100 Years 1910 – 2010”. These are also available to you at the Conference Office.

We appreciate the response to the above three items and urge you if you have not taken advantage of these offers, please do so.

We are proud of the history and the legacy of the South Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. And we definitely want to keep the flame burning – PAST – PRESENT – FUTURE!

The purpose of this column is to bring back to our remembrance those of our ministerial roster who may be retired or someone that you have not heard from in a long time. And we have found it very interesting to see how things are going in their lives today. If you know of someone that you have not seen or heard from for some time and you would like for us to get in contact with them and write about them, please feel free to contact me.

Recently at the “Home Going Celebration” of Rev. Dargan F. Atkinson on Thursday,February 21, 2013 at the Soul’s Harbor PHC, in an impromptu moment at the conclusion of the service, while his daughter, Mrs. Rachiel Fuller was speaking, she called upon two of the ministers present to speak if they would like. Rev. Leslie B. Floyd spoke for a few minutes and Rev. Sam Johnson closed the service with prayer. So, in this issue of The Challenge, we want to recognize and honor Rev. Leslie B. Floyd and Rev. Sam Johnson.

REV. LESLIE B. FLOYD

Rev. Leslie Floyd is presently living in Hartsville, South Carolina. His sister, Lorotha Baumgart resides with him in his home there.

Leslie began his ministry in the South Carolina Conference in

1951 under Superintendent H. P. Robinson. Later he joined the United States Army and served there from 1953 until 1955. He felt it an honor and a duty to serve his country.

His first assignments as a pastor included the Knightsville PHC for two years and also the Harmon Memorial PHC and the North PHC for two years.

After serving as a pastor, Leslie returned to Holmes Bible College and continued his education there from 1958 until 1963. He later entered into the evangelistic ministry and preached revivals throughout South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

When asked about his hobbies, Rev. Floyd said that he enjoyed studying the Word of God and reading his Bible and other good books. His reading brings him great joy and a real sense of accomplishment.

Today at the age of 82, Leslie presently attends and worships with the congregation of the Soul’s Harbor PHC in Hartsville, South Carolina.

Rev. Floyd said that he would encourage every young minister just starting in the ministry to give themselves to the study of God’s Word and be sure and get the Will of God for your own life and for this age.

REV. SAM JOHNSON

Rev. Sam Johnson was born in Darlington County, South Carolina on August 15, 1930. Today at the age of 82, he still feels the call of God burning on his heart and life. He was married to his beloved wife, Lucy for sixty‑one years before her “home going” onNovember 21, 2009.

God blessed Sam and Lucy with six children, five sons and one daughter. Two of their children followed their father in ministry. Their son, Earl passed away while he was pastoring the Mullins PHC. Today his son, Myrtice Leon is pastoring the Dillon PHC.One of Sam’s greatest joys now is spending time with his thirteen grandchildren and his thirteen great‑grandchildren.

South Carolina Conference Pictorial Directory AvailableWe ordered 500 copies of our “2012 Conference Directory” and we want to thank the many individuals and churches that have already purchased one. We also want to thank the churches and businesses that placed an ad in our new directory.

Copies are still available and if you or your church have not purchased one, we encourage you to get one before they are all gone. This directory is first class and full color. We have received many compliments on a job well done.

The cost of these directories is $25.00 each. They can be ordered or picked up at the Conference Office. For churches or individuals that purchase at least 4 copies, we will give you the 5th copy FREE.

Sam’s pastoral ministry carried him to the following churches: Wadesboro, Woodville, McColl, Lake View, Andrews, Dillon (twice), Camp Branch, Trinity (SC), Lakewood and Amanda. During his years as a pastor, he served the following churches as an Interim Pastor: Lakeview, Hayestown, Mullins and Little Lamb. He superannuated in June, 1993.

Today, Sam is attending the Dillon PHC where his son Myrtice Leon serves as pastor. He is enjoying his retirement and spends time both camping and fishing. Sam is still very active and enjoys preaching when invited by other pastors.

Rev. Johnson would urge younger ministers today to study God’s Word, live in the Word, walk in the Word and to “be an example of the believers”. Sam still believes that as a Christian and as a minister, we must have love in our hearts for the Word of God and that through prayer, revival will come to our world and God will save the lost.

Our theme for the 2013 Girls' Ministries Day was "You are daughters and sons of the King." (Gal. 3:26) The girls and sponsors all had a great day of fun and fellowship. We are apart of a royal family. Wear your crown with joy! Your shining rob of Righteousness. Walk in the light he's given you. You are rescued and you are saved. Thanks to Denise Wilson, all the district directors and the Girls' Ministries board for being such a blessing to our girls.

Thank God for the beautiful day that He gave our girls. Roxie LewisSC Girls' Ministries Director
