Founded in 1887, the Chattanooga Chamber’s membership consists of nearly 1,800 companies of all sizes which employ more than 80,000 people. The Chamber Foundation is a separate but related entity established in 1969 for the purpose of economic development, which it carries out through a public-private partnership called Chattanooga CAN DO. That effort has played a direct role in supporting the creation of more than 15,000 new jobs since 2002. The Chattanooga Chamber has won many national awards for recruitment, marketing, and existing industry support, and is accredited by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with four stars. THE CHAMBER’S JOB CREATION STRATEGY… • Encourages entrepreneurial activity. The Chamber man- ages the INCubator program (in the Hamilton County BDC), which is one of the largest and most successful business incu- bators in the U.S. Supports existing industry. The Chamber serves as a liai- son between companies and public officials in resolving issues and providing assistance with incentives, tax credits, locating sites, alternative financing resources, employee recruitment, and local business climate issues. Recruits new companies. The Chamber’s marketing and recruitment efforts have given the Chattanooga area an inter- national economic development reputation and played a criti- cal role in recruiting mega-projects like Volkswagen, Alstom, and Amazon.com. Supports workforce development and education. The Chamber partners with local educators in efforts to enhance local workforce preparation, including the STEM High School and HUB, the Principal Leadership Academy, and the Cham- ber’s award-winning School-to-Work programs, which reach about 10,000 8th-12th graders every year. Develops new leaders for the community. Leadership Chattanooga offers emerging leaders a 10-month orientation on community issues and develops their leadership skills to prepare them for prominent business, cultural, and political roles. Chattanooga Insight is a mini-leadership program that provides a community overview in just 1.5 days. THE CHAMBER HELPS MEMBER COMPANIES… Make business connections. Take advantage of more than 200 opportunities to build business connections throughout the year, including: 11 Area Councils (month- ly meetings), the African American Business Develop- ment Program, the International Business Council, the Young Professional Association of Chattanooga (YPAC), recognition and award events, as well as other network- ing activities. Boost marketing efforts. Every day the Chamber re- ceives calls from individuals and businesses looking for potential vendors. We recommend only Chamber mem- bers, and we only list Chamber members in our Resource and Relocation Guide print directory and on our search- able online business directory, which drew more than 30,000 people last year. Advocate for business-friendly public policies. The Chamber advocates on behalf of members at the local, state, and national level through the efforts of a full-time public policy expert. Stay in the loop. Through Trend magazine, members receive quarterly updates on the state of the local econ- omy, big picture movements within the business com- munity, public policy initiatives and opportunities to take advantage of local business resources. Members also re- ceive weekly emails notifying them of the latest business events, news, and opportunities.
