SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY JANUARY 17, 2016

Each year our church, along with churches across America, observes

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. The day is in observance of the Roe versus Wade

Supreme Court decision (Jan. 23, 1977) that legalized abortion in our nation.

The primary reason for this day has nothing to do with politics. We have a

moral mandate from God based on the authority of God’s Word to revere His

special creation: people made in His image. We observe this day to become better

informed on how we may stand for the sanctity of human life and to pray for the Lord to minister to the hearts of families affected by abortion.

Miller is saying we will never be able to fully deal with these “branch” sins until we get at their root.

For example, recognizing I am being snippy with my wife is one thing; that is a “branch sin.” I can apologize, make an excuse about having a bad day, being tired, etc., and try to watch my tongue. That sounds all fine and good, but really I am just cutting off the branch, and even then, not doing a very good job! The branch will grow back eventually and I will be right where I started. What sin lies at the root is a totally

different ballgame. Usually it’s my insecurity or pride that really needs to be addressed.

Identifying what our “root sins” are is paramount in God’s work of conforming us into the likeness of Christ. Confess them, take them to the cross, and watch God prune the branches!

Blessings, — Jack

Jack Miller in his book Repentance: A Daring Call to Real Surrender makes a distinction between “branch” and “root” sins. Here is what he says:

“Branch sins are those faults which others most quickly see in us. They are the sins which most obviously get in the way of relationships with others… branches derive their life and strength from hidden roots.” p. 34

We all have “branch sins” in our lives that fester. These sins can be anger, worry, impa-tience, etc. (fill in the blank).

What is an Interim Pastor?

In our Presbyterian Book of Church Order (BCO) what we call an interim pastor is actually called “Stated Supply.” Stated supply or interim is a temporary relationship established between the session and a PCA pastor with the approval of the local Presbytery for a period of up to one year. That relationship can be renewed by mutual consent of all three parties.

During this time the interim pastor actually functions in the role of a senior pastor in concert with the church session. This allows the church to operate in a fully functional mode until the Lord leads us to the one He has chosen to be the next senior pastor for Chapin Presbyterian Church.

If anyone has any questions, please direct them to Homer Sargent, Moderator of Session.

TREASURE SEEKERZ memory verse: “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s

household…But Christ was faithful as a Son over His household. And we are that

household if we hold on to the courage and the confidence of our hope.”

—Hebrews 3:5-6

Preschool version: “Moses was faithful as a servant…But Christ is faithful as the Son.”

It’s a new year, and a new verse for our HISKIDZ who want to be TREASURE SEEKERZ by hiding HIS

WORD in their hearts! This is our verse for January, as we journey through Exodus with Moses. This week

we will read about the Israelites wandering in the desert from Exodus 15-17. Please join us at 9:15 AM.

KIDZSPOT was great last week! The 2nd-5th graders have been challenged to have a quiet

time twice a week. They received a devotional, and if they bring it back in March with 20

lessons finished, they get a prize. But the biggest prize will be them growing closer to Jesus

as they spend time in His Word! Email me if you have any questions!

NO Handbell practice this week! Enjoy your long weekend, but I do hope to see you on Sunday!

I love you, —Mrs Jackie
