Internet Safety Night

On January 10, 2013, there was an Internet Safety Night at CRS at 6 pm in the library. There were 14 people who attended. Police Office Jay Church used a PowerPoint presentation to explain Internet safety. He talked about cyber bullying, hacking, and laws. When he finished, you could ask him questions. Mr. Salyers and Mrs. Elkins answered questions about the new BYOD policy. When 4th-6th grade students complete Ignition lessons and pass the Digital Driver’s License test, they can bring devices to school. At the end of the meeting, there was a drawing for prizes. Some prizes included watches, a video camera, a digital organizer, texting gloves, books, and book coupons. Some of the watches were donated by J & S Jewelry while the other items were free from Scholastic through Mrs. Elkins’ account points. Thanks to Officer Church for helping parents learn about Internet Safety. For more information on Internet Safety go to www.ashlandkypd.com. –Katie Turner

Blazer String Orchestra

On January 29, 2013, the Blazer String Orchestra came to Charles Russell Elementary. They arrived at about 12:15 pm in the CRS gym. They played different songs from different movies and one from each different type of music, such as jazz, romance, etc. Some of the movies were Titanic, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Pink Panther, and more. The orchestra was conducted by Mr. Boyer. Several students had attended to Charles Russell and three students were Mrs. Geyer’s children. –Dakotah Forth & Zach Lee

5th Grade Volcanoes

On January 28, 2013, Mrs. Hall’s 5th grade science class made volcanoes. Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Hornsby, student teacher, took the kids outside. The ingredients for the volcano were: empty water bottles, vinegar, tissue, and baking soda. First pour half a cup of vinegar into the empty water bottle. Next put three tablespoons of baking soda into a tissue that is cupped in your hand. Then you stuff the tissue with the baking soda down into the water bottle with vinegar. It should erupt. Some students’ volcanoes did not erupt while others got as high as four inches. After all the students did their volcanoes, Mrs. Hall had jug of pop and some mentos. She added the mentos to the coke and it erupted. This eruption acutally caused a spew of about one foot. This experiment was to show how a volcano erupts. –Anna Heineman & Gabby Talamantez

Marshmallow Houses

On February 8th, 2013, Mrs. Hall’s 5th grade science class designed marshmallow houses. They did this to know how to build houses that can withstand an earthquake. The supplies were mini-marshmallows and toothpicks. We made up our own designs. Each student either worked as a team of 2 or 3 or they worked alone. To test our design, we shook the table or book that the house was on. The results were that all of the houses survived the earthquake. We all used our imagination. We learned and had fun while doing it! -Dakotah Forth & Grant Kelley

Chinese New Year Celebration

The third grade classes celebrated Chinese New Year when Mrs. Janice Ledford came to talk about the traditions associated with Chinese New Year. 2013 is the year of the snake, and the recent years of the snake are 1989 and 2001. All of the students determined what their sign was in the Chinese zodiac. Most of them were born under the sign of the monkey (2004). The characteristics associated with people born under the sign of the monkey are curious, clever, fun-loving, intellectual, creative, and intuitive. The students listened to “The Story of the Chinese Zodiac” which explained why the rat was given the honor of having the first year of the zodiac. In addition, they did a reader’s theater entitled, “Nian: The Dragon: A Classroom Play.” In this play, the students learned why many Chinese paint their front doors red. This was to keep out the dragons and other evil spirits. Other Chinese New Year traditions include flying colorful kites, receiving red envelopes filled with money, having a dragon parade, having fireworks displays, and hanging long, red banners to wish passersby good luck for the New Year. Fruits and other foods have great symbolism. Students sampled some of these foods: oranges, fried rice, fortune cookies, rice cakes, and chocolate, gold-wrapped coins. The students also learned that Chinese New Year does not fall on the same day each year because it is tied to the cycles of the moon. It typically falls sometime between late- January and mid-February. This year it was February 10. The Chinese celebrate for fifteen days or until there is a full moon. –Preston Ledford

Valentine’s Dance

On February 15th, Charles Russell Elementary had a Valentine’s Dance. Kids at CRS paid two dollars to get in. Some kids brought extra money for snacks. They went to the library to put up their backpacks then they got in line to pay to get into the dance held in the gym. The sixth grade voted for a Valentine’s Court. The court had Jaden Stevens, Miranda Martin, Sarah Brison, Will Adkins, Jacob Kemper, and Preston Ledford. The queen was Miranda Martin and the king was Jacob Kemper. All the kids had fun. Money from the dance went to fund the sixth grade end of the year field trip. -Melanie Grimm

Bluegrass Music

On Wednesday, February 20, Mrs. Ledford’s 3rd grade class learned about Bluegrass music. They were getting live Bluegrass Music played to them by Miss Tara Sansome, 3rd grade Instructional Assistant, and her fiancé, Aaron Lewis. At first they played a song about an old man with a mule, and a house 16 stories high. They used a fiddle and a guitar. After that they played a song about a chicken that sometimes laid eggs and sometimes laid potatoes. Then they talked about where banjos came from; after they watched a video about an African banjo player playing an old-fashioned banjo. Next they showed us picks, used to play banjos. After that they talked about the dobro; it looks kind of like a guitar but is played differently. They played another song and the last song was a fiddle tune. –Faith Nivens

CRS Science Fair

The Science Fair for 5th and 6th grades was held on Tuesday, February 26, in the CRS gym. The students could work in a team of 2 or 3 students or alone. The 5th grade winners were: 1st – Anna Heineman “Can Water Glow?”; 2nd – Ashleigh Taylor/Leia Sexton “What Kind of Containers Keep Ice Frozen Longest?”; and 3rd – Felicity Elam “How Different Liquids Effect Orbeez”. The 6th grade winners included: 1st – (tie) Will Adkins/Gage Hignite “Charcoal Water Purification” & Brianna Lambert/Gabi Griffith “How Salt and Sugar in Water Effect Plants”; 2nd - (tie) Raegan/Jaden Stevens “How Coffee, Tea and Soda Stain Teeth” & Joe Sewell “How Temperature Effects Mixing of Solutions”; 3rd – Shalayna Rice/Kaitlyn Lee/Hollie Sipps “How Caffeine Effects Typing”.

Dr. Seuss Day

March 1, 2013, was Dr. Seuss Day at CRS. In Mrs. Bonner’s kindergarten class, Mrs. Elkins came to read Green Eggs and Ham while wearing the Cat in the Hat hat. In Mrs. Geyer’s kindergarten class, Mrs. Green read Marvin K. Mooney. Both classes ate green eggs and ham to celebrate. Other classes read a variety of Dr. Seuss books, made hats, or dressed like characters from his books. It was really nice to see the kids smiling and laughing and having fun reading. –Sarah Brison

ACTC Science Fair Several CRS students participated in the Ashland Community and Technical College’s five county Science Fair. Students who participated included: Will Adkins, Gage Hignite, Kaitlyn Lee, Shalayna Rice, and Hollie Sipps. Will and Gage’s entry “Water Filtration” won 1st place in the 6th-8th grade Engineering category and 3rd place overall for 6th-8th grades. Way to go guys! -Mrs. McDavid

Tobacco-Free Academy

On February 27th from 1-2:30 we had two ladies come in to present the Tobacco Academy. One lady, the main speaker, was Cathy Anderson. Ms. Anderson presented a PowerPoint about different cancers that drugs can cause. They did different activities. Mrs. Miller took Harlea Blevins and told her to do some jumping jacks. Then told her to try and breathe through a straw. Also she put big gardening gloves on Eli Chaviro and told him to tie his shoe. It was very hard he couldn’t do it. Mrs. Miller beat Eli. She told us that it would be like that if he would drink. Also she had Preston Hughes wear blurry glasses and asked him what he saw. His response was that he couldn’t see anything. It was very hard for him to walk on the line. She said this would be like drinking and driving. At Mrs. Anderson’s table she had two lungs; a healthy lung and a smoker’s lung. She pumped air into the healthy lung and it blew up like a balloon; the other blew up very little. We learned very important things through this program. It was lots of fun. Reality Store On March 5, 2013, Mrs. Foster’s 5th grade homeroom class went on a trip to the 4-H Reality Store at the Boyd County Fairgrounds. We got fake money to spend on things that adults would have to buy in real life. There were stands and they were listed with names of things, like pet shop, snack shop, clothes department, etc. We had to buy one thing from each table. The first thing we had to do was go to the bank to get the money. We each got $75. We also had to deposit some of our money, so if we ran out we can go back to the bank and get some out. If we ran out of money then we would to go to SOS and they would give us extra money to spend. After we bought one thing from each table, we went to the checkout stand. Then we got a survey to fill out about our experience. When we took the survey back to the checkout stand one last time, we got a surprise! We could choose between a Payday or Zero candy bar. -Paige Kelley, Jessie Williams & Josh Rice

Animals in the Library

Ms. Meade has recently acquired some furry friends in the library—a cheetah, a tiger, a lion, and a giraffe. Don’t worry, not real ones, just stuffed. She named the cheetah Charlee and then held a contest to let the kids name the other three. Six name choices were selected for each animal from students’ suggestions. Then all the students voted for their favorite choices using a blog on the library’s web page. The winners were Gizelle the giraffe, Simba the Lion, and Aristotle the Tiger.

Firefighter Visit

The students in Mrs. King and Mr. Manning’s 2nd grade classes had a story about firefighters in their reading books. So they invited 2nd grade instructional assistant Mrs. Cornwell’s firefighter husband (and former CRS student) to visit their classes. So on March 8, he came to the CRS gym and brought fireman’s gear including a suit, mask, air tank, vest, and helmet. He asked Mrs. Cornwell to get into the suit while explaining about each part. He taught them how to reach 911, and then they walked outside to look at Ashland’s newest fire engine, No. 2. Next each the students walked through the cab past the backseats. When each student got to the other side, he gave them a plastic red fire helmet! The children asked him some questions like: What happens if your air runs out? When do fires usually occur during the day? If their air runs out another fire fighter shares his air. Fires usually occur during the evening. He also assigned the kids homework. They were to plan out their fire escape plan for their homes. –Jake

Basketball All Stars Ashland’s 6th grade All-Star Basketball team won the Wayne, WV, 11-year-old Tournament in February. Team members from CRS included 6th graders: Will Adkins, Richie Hall, Preston Ledford, Russell Rogers, and Gharan Thomas. On March 2nd, at the Coal Grove, OH, All Star Tournament, Preston Ledford was named to the all-tournament team. Good job!

4th Grade Volcanoes

On March 13th 4th grade made volcanoes in Miss Hood’s science classes. Some of the lava went on the ceilings, some got on people, and unfortunately and eventually it got in someone’s mouth. We did this by mixing baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, and hot water. The lava colors we had were yellow, orange, blue, green, and red. People thought that making volcanoes was really fun. They thought the color was really pretty. First we put the top of a two liter bottle into a bowl and then we put in baking soda, warm water, food coloring and then Miss Hood put in some vinegar we squeezed the top of the bottle and then it exploded! Hailey Cabell & Taylor York

Leprechaun Traps

On Friday, March 15, 2013, Mrs. King and Mr. Manning’s 2nd grade classes made Leprechaun traps for St. Patrick’s Day. They had to show the other kids how their leprechaun traps worked. They all used the simple machines such as: the pulley, incline plane, wedge, lever, wheel and axel, and screw. It was a fun and simple way to learn about simple machines.
