Well it is summer; a slow start but I
think it is safe to say,,,it is boating season.
Hope you all have your boats in the water and
have had your VSC done. I don‟t see much of
Kevin this time of year; he is hunted down on
the river by everyone needing a VSC. I guess
that is a good thing,,,but I have had many
lonely dinners.

COMMANDER‟S REPORT
Cdr. Carol Lamendola, JN
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer
(although, as I write this, it is not yet
summer).
If you were not at our picnic, you were
missed. And YOU missed a really great
time, thanks to Joe Jurzwiak and his
fantastic committee: Joyce Jurzwiak,
Cheryl & Bob Russell. You folks did a
superb job and we thank you. The picnic
was well attended (38) and everyone
enjoyed the pulled pork.
As promised, we had a short meeting,
mainly discussing our upcoming Squadron
Rendezvous. Preparations for this event are
well underway. All we need is great
weather for the entire weekend, calm seas
for those coming in by boat, and enough
wind blowing in the right direction for those
sailing in. And, of course, we need the wind
in the opposite direction for your return trip!
I‟m working on that with the One in charge!
(That means I‟m really praying for good
weather and you can all help do that, too!)
Please get your reservations in ASAP. It
helps so much in planning.
The folks at Oak Orchard Yacht Club are
happy to extend their hospitality to our
squadron, and we will be joining them in
their chicken barbeque on Saturday evening,
with live music to follow. For anyone
arriving on Friday, you are welcome to eat
at the restaurant. Also, the shower facilities
are available for your use.
Activities: We will have either a predicted
log contest (by dinghy – no motors - only
oars), or a dinghy race; a land contest and,
of course, our famous bocce tournament (not
nautical, but nice!). If you don‟t have a
dinghy, don‟t worry. There will be one you
can use. I wish we could do it all, but there
are not enough hours in the day, because…
There will be a short Bridge meeting at
around 1530, followed by the Commander‟s
cocktail party before the barbeque.
For those not coming by boat: Consider
coming early for the breakfast on the T-
dock. Then we can get right into the fun and
games and maybe get it all in.
If at all possible, I urge everyone to make
the effort to come to the rendezvous. Our
next meeting is not until September 7th
, and
that is a long time away.
September Meeting Program 7 Sept RPS General Meeting
Guest Speaker – Jon Hitchcock from NOAA
Jon will be doing a presentation on NOAA storm radio reporting on violent storms and
marine weather.
October Meeting Program
5 Oct RPS General Meeting
Dick Sherwood of Webster, NY will
make a Power Point presentation
covering the Antique and Classic Boat
Society (ACBS) and the elegant world of
wooden boats. Photos from the
Skaneateles Antique and Classic Boat
Show and the ACBS International Boat
Show are also included.
ACBS is an international organization
dedicated to the preservation,
restoration and enjoyment of our
wooden boat heritage, and presentations
such as this are aimed at broadening
interest and participation in vintage
boating, especially among younger
would-be boaters.
Dick is a past president of ACBS and
currently serves on the Board of
Directors of the Society. He is also past
president of the Society's Finger Lakes
Chapter (the group which, in
cooperation with the Skaneateles Area
Chamber of Commerce, organizes the
Skaneateles Boat Show each July) and
serves on that chapter's Board of
Directors.
To all Power Squadron Members:
May you all have a fun and safe summer of
boating.

RAMBLIN’S ROUND THE RIVER
By: Lt. Kevin G. Parks, AP (Star Reporter)
NO RAMBLIN‟S THIS ISSUE, THE STAR REPORTER WILL
RETURN NEXT ISSUE!
Until next time…Raise „Em up…..
“Believe me, my young friend,” said the water rat solemely, “there is nothing…absolutely nothing…half so much worth
doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing…about in boats…or with boats. In or out of „em, it doesn‟t matter.
Nothing seems really to matter, that‟s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don‟t; whether you arrive at your
destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you‟re always busy, and you never do
anything in particular; and when you have done it there is always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you‟d
much better not. Look here! If you‟ve really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together, and
have a long day of it?” from: The Wind and The Willows
LAST HORIZON
Robert Gears
On behalf of the Rochester Power Squadron, we wish to extend our deepest
sympathy to Jane Gears and the family of Robert Gears. Bob passed away on
April 19, 2011. Bob was a member of the Rochester Power Squadron since 1988.
We enjoyed Bob‟s company, his wit and charm at many Power Squadron events.
He was always smiling and it went very well with his work as a “hospital caring
clown”.
Bob was very generous. He gave us a large roaster that he had made; for us
to use at our yearly marina party. It is still in use today. Bob would stop by our
home and drop off boating items that he no longer had use for. We have a
stainless steel boat grill mounted to our back deck to this day, so not a day goes
by where we don‟t think of Bob.
I know many of you have great memories of Bob. Keep him in your heart.
HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!
