Students from across Worcestershire aged between 9-15 years were invited to design a poster to go on the side of the bus to encourage motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to think about road safety during the winter months.
The competition was the brain child of the Personal Injury Department at leading Worcestershire law firm, Parkinson Wright LLP, West Mercia Police, Halfords and CBS Outdoor UK.
James Stephens 7SS was the winner in the 9-11 year old category and his design was also awarded the overall prize and turned in to a poster which is now on the side of a bus which follows a route around the City of Worcester. James won £100 in Halfords vouchers to spend at the Malvern Branch, £50 in cash donated from Parkinson Wright LLP and lights and locks for his bicycle donated by West Mercia Police.
Charlotte Branfield 7BA came third in the 9-11 year old category.
Commenting on the competition, Laurie Green, Partner and Head of the Personal Injury Department and WPC Val Ferreira, Youth Inclusion Officer with West Mercia Police said,
“We were absolutely delighted with the response we had to the competition. The standard of entries was very high and it was difficult to choose between them. Every year thousands of people are killed or injured on the roads and we felt that this was a good way to raise awareness of the issue with young people and the public at large.”
Felicity Jubb Account Executive at CBS Outdoor UK who organised the production of the poster said,
“We were absolutely delighted to offer our sponsorship to this competition. Advertisements on buses are seen by motorists daily so what better way of encouraging them to think about the safety of pedestrians and cyclists then by displaying a road safety poster on the side of a bus.”

We left for CERN at 8:00 from The Chase. We wanted to learn about particles and Space.
We went to Birmingham and got on a plane. Then in Switzerland we got on a train.
After settling in we went to the Lake, we then did some work which made our brains ache! So we went to bed…….
The next morning we had to be up by seven and made our way to Physics heaven!
Once at CERN we had a talk and tour by Gene Wilder, all about the Large Hadron Collider.
By this time we were all flagging and had sore feet, we went to the canteen for something to eat.
I remember the afternoon at CERN especially, it began when 2 lunches were acquired unconventionally!
We then left the building to have a group pic, taken on a dipole we were very quick.
After we saw some sculptures made from bits of old probe, we then went inside the giant wooden globe.
Here we saw an amazing light show, in it we watched the universe grow.
After we shopped for a mouse pad we went to the microcosm which wasn’t half bad.
It explained all the different parts of the LHC then we went back to the hostel, it was time for tea.
We went for a traditional Swiss fondue which consisted of a cheesy pot of goo?
A man came round and played us the spoons; we played the alpine horn and looked like goons!
On the way back to the youth hostel, heading for bed, we stopped in a café for hot choccy instead.
The next morning we got up quite late and made our way across the lake.
We walked around town but the shops were shut so we ate pizza outside not from the hut.
After some trams and train a bus and plane, we all arrived home safe again.
But not before Pete left his passport on the plane so minus points for you!

The Chase Orienteering team “Malvern Chasers” again brought home both the Yellow and the Orange course trophies from the Hereford & Worcester Schools Orienteering Championships which was held on Saturday 12
th March in the Deer Park at Eastnor.
The Chase fielded a strong team many of them winning individual medals as well as putting in a great team effort to win two trophies.
Miles Richardson was competing for The Chase for the first time and ran a very fast time to win the gold medal on the Yellow course for Year 8 boys. Stan Pritchard and Ross Harnden running as a pair came in close behind him to take the silver with Nicholas Chauhan just slightly slower taking the bronze. Harry Mootz was sorry to be out of the medals but came in not too far behind to take 4
th place.
Year 9 boys were competing on the Orange course and some of them found it a little tricky but due to an excellent team effort, they won the trophy! Ben Scott triumphed and took gold in a very good time with Fred Wolff following to claim silver and Dan Milton not far behind him getting the bronze. James Russell did well to come in 4
th and was only
just out of the medals. Matthew Chauhan ran a very fast time but unfortunately made an error with one control which meant his time didn’t count.
Also running the Orange course were the Year 10 boys who had quite a contest between themselves to decide the medals. In the end David Creber took the gold, Chris Vickers the silver and
Jake Herbert the bronze.
Jamie MacKenzie running for Year 11 on the Green course didn’t have a lot of competition but ran a fast time to take the gold medal.
Anyone is welcome to join the Malvern Chasers and represent the school but you need to have done a little orienteering first. You can find information about local events on the Harlequins Orienteering Club website at www.harlequins.org.uk . Once you’ve tried a
couple of events, you can join us. Just tell Mr Thomas that you are interested and he will contact Mrs MacKenzie who organises the Chase orienteering team.

In total, you will be pleased to know I am sure, that The Chase has raised to date, £1180.80, a significant contribution to the amazing £74 million raised on the Friday night.

Saturday 19
th March saw the Main School Choir perform for the third successive year at the
Worcester Competitive Arts Festival . They sang “Imagine” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing”, and impressed the judges with their conviction and range of expression. They were narrowly beaten to first prize by another excellent choir, but achieved a Distinction and many very appreciative comments – congratulations!
Other Chase competitors at the Festival include the String Quartet, the Clarinet Trio and various individuals – well done to them all!
The Music Department would like to invite all members of the Chase community to the Spring Concert on April 6
th at 7pm in the Main Hall. This will be the “big” concert of the
year as so many of our older students are otherwise occupied in the summer… Please do come along and support our musical groups who have been working so hard over the year. Programme to include: Senior Orchestra playing “Pirates of the Caribbean”; Chamber Choir giving a taster of the Mozart Requiem they’re involved in at Worcester Cathedral; Girls’ Choir singing “Fields of Gold”; the aforementioned Main Choir with their successful Festival items; Training Orchestra and Training Band with a selection of popular and fun classics, plus much more! Tickets are available on the door (£5/£3) and there will be refreshments available at the interval. Come along and see what’s going on!

On 31st January a group of Chase students went up to Birmingham Symphony Hall with
Miss Harrison to take part in a West Midland Musical Event called “Sing Up”.
Those people lucky enough to be in the audience spent a very enjoyable evening listening to hundreds of young people from the West Midlands sing. The programme included an African Chant, an Indian piece for solo voice and choir as well as The Lord is my Shepherd by Howard Goodall (perhaps better known to some as the theme tune of the Vicar of Dibley!) A group of lads from Prince Henry’s High School, Evesham both entertained and impressed us with their “Barber Shop” songs. The massed choir finished with a resounding performance of “The Power in Me” composed by the wife of the well-known conductor David Lawrence. The compère for the evening was Michael Collie, (you may have seen him on Country File!).
The event gave young people the opportunity to sing in a large group with other youngsters they had never met in a marvellous setting.
Thank you to the music department for giving our students this opportunity.

The World Book Day picture book workshop with Hannah Shaw
was a great success with all students involved showing great enthusiasm for
the writing and illustration activities throughout the day. Hannah judged the
shortlisted entries and awarded first prize to "Rosie The Rainbow Fish" by
Jessica Meakin (7GL) and Rosalie Creber (7GL).

Skye Southall 11BL has won a Tryangle
Award in the Caring category.

The existing members of the Chase Association would like to say a public “thank you” to all those who have stepped forward to join us as a result of our pleas for help. At our meeting on 9
th March
everyone was very positive and we believe that The Chase Association has the potential to make a real difference to the school, especially at this time of harsh cut-backs.
Thanks to our increased membership we are pleased to announce that there will be a Summer Fair this year as usual and the date is:

July 6pm – 8pm
Please continue to support us in our fund-raising efforts as the students will benefit more than ever from our efforts over the coming years.

th May at 7.30pm in the Staff Room. Although quite a few new members have

been successful in attaining a place at the Young
Enterprise Area Board Presentation Finals on Wednesday
30 March at The Royal Grammar School, Worcester. They
are rated as one of the top eight companies, out of the
twenty two companies that ran this year in the area, a
tremendous achievement. This continues the excellent
reputation Chase sixth-formers have for running some of
the best YE companies in South Worcestershire and,
more often than not, being the only representatives from
the state sector in the finals. They will now deliver a
five minute presentation to an invited audience and
to answer questions from a panel of judges. The top four
companies from South Worcestershire will then go
forward to the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Final on
the 4th May at County Hall in Worcester.
