Des Dillon’s dark comedy Blue Hen is a gritty, moving story about two men living on the roughest scheme in Coatbridge. But they’ve one thing going for them – the power of their own imaginations.

W elcome to the final production of our 2009/10 Season. In 2004 we staged John Byrne’s adaptation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya (renamed

Uncle Varick) and immediately afterwards commissioned him to turn his hand to another of Chekhov’s masterpieces.

this is that play: a Cherry Orchard relocated from revolution-era russia to Scotland during a period that remains historically significant for many Scots and British people. John’s new period version retains

– and, I think, sharpens for audiences today – all the drama, comedy and ideas of class, economy and politics that the original is blessed with.

John has long been a creative force in Scotland, and it is no secret that his previous works – such as The Slab Boys trilogy in theatre and Tutti Frutti on television – are now regarded as classics in their own right. Bringing his unique voice to Chekhov’s big plays is a perfect combination, as I hope you’ll agree, and we’re delighted to have assembled a crack ensemble cast under the direction of tony Cownie, our Associate Artist, to bring it vividly to life.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this past Season of work, and I look forward to welcoming you back for another Lyceum Season in September.
