Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center

Part of the oldest juvenile justice system in the nation.

Oversight is provided by the Cook County Board of Commissioners

One of the largest adolescent detention centers in the nation

Daily average census of 500

Over 7,000 booked annually through intake.

STD Screening at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center

Approximately 35 adolescents are booked daily

CDPH staff counsel the adolescents during intake and collects urine specimen for testing

CDPH staff provides HIV counseling and testing

Syphilis screening is conducted once remanded

STD Screening at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center

Specimen is processed by the state lab.

Treatment is provided during sick call once adolescent is remanded to a housing unit.

Medication is provided free of charge by the Illinois Department of Public Health

STD Section

CDPH staff provides field follow-up services for adolescents that are released prior to disease notification and treatment

Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center

Special Initiatives

CDPH negotiated with the Chicago Public Schools to proved health education for female adolescent detainees. This fulfilled their mandatory health education requirement.

Reproductive health education and services

Hepatitis B education, vaccination and tracking

Health Education and HIV counseling and testing at 2 alternative sentencing programs.
