2 April/May 2021

From the President's Desk

I am a list maker—big and small, long and short, daily and long term.

One of the major items on our list at the Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes for 2021 is to complete the Build With Us Capital Campaign for the Nicholasville campus.

This campus is instrumental to our ministry. It allows us to serve a greater number of families by expanding our community-based services, which are desperately needed. Our residential youth and agency staff have enjoyed this campus for over three years. The lovely setting has been a real plus during the difficult

months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently, my reading has included the Biblical books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Together these leaders are joined with God and the people of Israel to rebuild Jerusalem after they returned from exile. It is a rich text full of stories of challenges but also hope.

While I have read these books many times, the importance of the strength and determination of the community is so present in my current reading.

I am thankful for previous leadership at KyUMH who cast this vision for a

new campus, and I know as we step forward to retire the debt that we don’t do it alone. Just like Ezra and Nehemiah didn’t step into their building project without God and their community, our KyUMH family is essential to finishing the campaign.

Will you Build With Us? Learn more about the campus at kyumh.org/BuildWithUs. Thank you for considering your part in helping us finish strong.

March of 2020 caused many of us to re-imagine the way we lived our daily lives. For a few weeks, life seemed to slam to a stop as we all looked on the future with trepidation.

At the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes (KyUMH), our youth had to stop seeing their families and volunteers in person. Because many of our youth are medically fragile, contact with the virus could be deadly for them, and keeping them safe has been our top priority. However, it was clear that the kids still needed the love and support of our volunteers.

One step at a time, we moved each mentor for each child onto Zoom. We were blessed to receive a grant from our partner Orphan Care Alliance to obtain more computers and develop several different video conferencing accounts so that multiple children could connect with their mentors at the same time.

With intrepid resiliency and steady love, each mentor made the switch. Soon, we began bringing on new volunteers via video

conferencing, allowing us to engage mentors from across the state! Volunteers started caring for kids they had never met in person.

Watching each mentor figure out how to cherish their mentee via Zoom was inspiring. They introduced our kids to their family members, and some of them

even play games virtually. Young people who missed their pets from home were able to interact in a small way with their mentors’ pets online. You should have seen their faces—full of delight!

In conjunction with Asbury Theological Seminary (ATS), we were also able to onboard

several new interns. Many ATS students’ internships were cancelled, but KyUMH was able to offer them a place to serve. Our interns provided activities, Bible studies, church services, emotional support and fun events at the Nicholasville and Lexington campuses.

While we weren’t able to continue having in-person birthday parties, a beloved tradition for our youth, our partner nonprofit EPIC Celebrations faithfully provided birthday cakes for many youth. These were home-baked for each child with their favorite flavors and colors to celebrate their special day.

In February 2021, a young man came to KyUMH from a placement where his birthday was not celebrated. EPIC baked a cake for him just a few days after he arrived, so he would know he was loved and celebrated as a child of God.

Lastly, we have had some wonderful people continue to help us in the office and around campus, staying distant from the kids. They’ve safely stuffed thousands of individual letters to people like you.

Because of you, we’ve made it through 150 years of challenges, and the COVID-19 pandemic has been no different. We are grateful for our family from all over Kentucky who surrounds God’s kids who need his love.

On March 18, 1871, KyUMH's powerful ministry began due to the determination of compassionate Christians who could not bear to see widows and orphans struggle to survive. Throughout these 150 years, five generations have continued to support this ministry. Because of their leadership, thousands of children have come through our doors to receive love, shelter, and healing.

In the 31 years that I have served here, I have been blessed to know so many of those compassionate people who were integral to sustaining this ministry. One of those special people was Grace Evelyn Miller from Elkton, KY.

For decades, Ms. Miller supported KyUMH every year with gifts for the Fifth Sunday Offerings and with memorial and honor gifts. Her vocation was school teacher.

Ms. Miller passed in April 2020. She left specific bequests to 15 different people and places, and named KyUMH as the beneficiary for the residue of her estate. Her estate is still in the process of being settled, but, by the estimation of the attorney, the portion coming to KyUMH is so generous that it will be the largest bequest we have ever received.

Ms. Miller’s life was one dedicated to educating and caring for children. Thanks to her bequest, she will continue to care for and change the lives of young people for years to come.

I am humbled to work in a ministry where, over the years, I have seen so many lives transformed and worked with so many passionate donors. Thank you for your part in supporting the young people we serve!

Finish Building With us!Finish Building With us!

We are excited to be nearing the end of our Build with Us Capital Campaign to move our Versailles Campus to our brand new facilities in Nicholasville. With this new campus, we can better meet the complex needs of children with histories of abuse and neglect.

Our services are more essential than ever. Kentucky had the highest rate of child

by Melinda Ryles-Smith, Vice President of Development

abuse nationwide from 2017-2019, and has been in the top three highest rates for several years.1

Our Nicholasville campus is essential to our efforts to respond to this crisis. The state-of-the-art facilities give a safe home for our youth to heal from their pasts. This campus also has allowed us to expand our community-based programs. Through early-intervention treatment, we seek to keep families together and prevent future abuse or neglect.

Kentucky children were victims of abuse or neglect in 2019 (20,130 children total).1

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we are only $1.2 million away from being able to "put a bow on it" and complete the funding for the beautiful Nicholasville campus. By reaching our goal, we will be well-positioned to serve more youth and families than ever before.

We need your help to obtain the last $1.2 million toward completion of the Build With Us Campaign. We have several naming opportunities left! There is a

particular beauty of placing your name on a part of the Nicholasville campus. It allows the youth to see the tremendous love and support of so many special friends like you as they go about their daily lives. We have naming opportunities ranging from $3,000 and up still available.

If you would like more information on supporting the Capital Campaign, please reach out to us via phone (859) 523-3001 or email at [email protected].

Kentucky's children are depending on us.

ALUMNI FEATURE

David grew up in a loving household with his mother, father and younger brother. "We realized we were poor," David remembers, "but that did not really matter. We were like most kids—young and wild."

Throughout his childhood, David's mother was hospitalized several times for mental breakdowns. His father worked hard to provide for his family, sometimes seven days a week at two jobs. It was extremely difficult for him to care of his sons while his wife was in the hospital.

Without parental oversight, at age 13, David and his brother mischievously began skipping school. After two months, Child Protective Services intervened and determined David and his brother were to be sent to the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes (KyUMH).

by Rebecca Hurshman, Communications/Public Relations Coordinator

ABOVE: Photos of David (striped shirt), age 14, from the Children's Voice in 1978; A current photo of David.

"We were not happy about going to KyUMH at all," David says. The day the two boys were to move, they rode the city bus all over town, hoping to escape the authorities who were waiting for them at home.

When David first arrived, he felt abandoned. He saw KyUMH as the place that took him away from his family. The longer he spent at our Versailles campus, the more David learned to see the good in his situation.

At a crucial point of his development as a teenager, KyUMH provided him with holistic support: nutritious meals, ample opportunities for recreation, weekly counseling and a community of staff who cared for him.

David's house parents had a tremendous impact. He remembers one of them saying, "I'm not your

mother, and I'll never be your mother, but I am here for you." This conversation has stayed with him decades after leaving KyUMH.

KyUMH gave David a foundation of care which helped him succeed. He excelled in school, making honor roll and achieving all A's some semesters. "It pushed me to try even harder because I was being recognized for doing well," he says.

David developed strong work ethic through his daily chores in the cottage and around campus, and learned how to interact with people from different backgrounds as he made friends with the other boys his age. "I always

"I always have fond memories of

KyUMH."

have fond memories of KyUMH," he says now.

After graduating high school, David attended Eastern Kentucky University for two years, which he says he would not have had the opportunity to do without support from KyUMH's educational director. David then transitioned into the workforce, and has been a licensed optician with the Lexington Veteran Affairs system for 30 years.

David has stayed connected to KyUMH throughout the years. He attended several Annual Day celebrations at the Versailles campus. He had the opportunity to meet a few residents, and he gave them this advice about making the best of their time at KyUMH: "Just look at all the good things you have and all the people who are doing their best to help you."

Seeing the GoodWhile leaving his family home was challenging, KyUMH's holistic care helped David see the good in his new life.

We featured the beginning of the McNeils' adoption story last summer as they overcame the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to adopt their son.

Read about the conclusion here!

What was it like to travel to meet your child?"After many delays, we were finally able to fly to Columbia in the beginning of October 2020. We were required to get COVID tested before our flight. Once in Columbia, we were given Germ-X everywhere we went! The cleaning staff at our apartment did an amazing job keeping it safe and clean in their hazmat suits. My husband and I were both healthy throughout our whole stay. Thinking back to the stress levels and the amount of planning it took, it was all worth it!"

What is life like with your adopted child? "We have been so overjoyed with finally being able to have Santiago home with us!! He has now been home for six months. We have been able to share with him our American traditions and culture for holidays and everyday living. He has been able to share with us different traditions and his culture from Colombia.

Santiago is incredible and he has fit in so well with our family from the moment he was able to hug his sisters and brother for the very first time. It’s incredible to witness the love they all have for each other. If you saw all four of my children together you would think that they have been together for all of their lives.

We are very thankful to Colombia for entrusting us to be our sweet Santiago’s forever family. Especially now with all of the different losses that COVID-19 has brought, we cherish each other and want to continue to draw closer to each other as a family."
