INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
GOD’S STORY – Part 2: The Greatest Sequel Ever Told!
by Pastor Jerome Marroquin
Sequels are hotter than ever in today’s popular culture. Once an unforgettable story is
told that captures the hearts and imaginations of the public (whether through film or
the printed word), an outcry typically arises for “More! More! Encore!” … and thus, the
inevitable Part Two’s begin to appear …
The Bible is by far the Greatest Story Ever Told. It is the most amazing epic tale of res-
cue and redemption that has ever been revealed to humankind. But this is no mere
work of creative fiction; this is God’s holy, inspired truth! Yet, make no mistake: As
powerful and necessary and foundational as the Old Testament is, without the sequel,
or what we call the New Testament, there would be no resolution to the Divine Plot that
began way back in Genesis Chapter 1. It would be like reading a captivating mystery
novel that’s missing its final chapter; or like watching an exciting movie that never
reaches its breathtaking climax and conclusion. Without the New Testament, there
would be no consummation to God’s glorious Story; there would be no ultimate salvation
for our fallen, wounded planet! Jesus Christ is the indispensable defining piece of the
puzzle who alone makes sense of the Bigger Picture, and who alone holds God’s entire
story together.
“In the past (i.e., throughout the period of the Old Testament) God spoke to our ancestors
through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has
spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he
made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of
his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Heb. 1:1-3)
“The Son is the image of the invisible God … all things have been created through him and for him … and in him all things hold together.” (Col. 1:15,16,17)
But that’s not all! The great revelation of the New Covenant is that Jesus Christ is not
only the all-important “sequel” and “final word” of God’s Story, he is also the first Word,
as well. He is the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and Omega, the very Center-Piece
of God’s will from the beginning of time, all the way to its grand consummation!
The Risen Glorified Christ proclaims: “I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One
… And I hold the keys of death and Hades” (Revelation 1:17-18). Jesus Christ, then, is
also the Key to understanding God’s ultimate, defining purpose not only for ourselves,
but for the entire world, as well.
This is why I am so excited to announce the long-awaited sequel to the Gospel Project
which we began way back in January! On Sunday, September 1st, as we enter a brand
new fall season, we will also be embarking on a fresh, new exciting journey through the
New Testament, God’s Story – Part 2. Once again we will be doing this as an all-church
family – including adults, students, and our children – all studying God’s Word to-
gether!

(God’s Story, Cont. from Page 1)
In a world that is rapidly becoming less and less biblically literate and more and more ego-centric and
narcissistic, God is calling his church to dare to go against the grain and offer an Alternative Gospel
Vision that leads to joy and peace and abundant life in Jesus. But how well do we really know this
Story? How can we share the Good News unless we are so saturated in it and compelled by it that it in-
stinctively becomes part of all that we think and say and do? That is our major goal as we journey to-
gether through Part Two of God’s Great Story!
Come be a part of this life-changing journey! Each Sunday I will preach from the major themes of the
New Testament, telling Christ’s amazing story. Then, we will all gather together in small groups for
study and fellowship and prayer as we dig ever deeper into God’s Good News. I invite you to grab your
Bible and a Gospel Project Study Guide (available in the church office), and join the small group of your
choice as we embark on this unforgettable adventure together! Here’s how the Story will unfold begin-
ning on the first Sunday of September:
The GOSPEL PROJECT: GOD’S STORY – Part 2
Unit 1: JESUS’LIFE AND MINISTRY
September 1 The Incarnation: The Coming of the Messiah-King
September 8 Jesus’ Teaching: The Teaching of the Kingdom
September 15 Jesus’ Miracles: The Power of the Kingdom
September 22 The Cross: The King’s Identity as Suffering Messiah
September 29 The Resurrection: The Resurrection and Exaltation
of King Jesus
Unit 2: GOD’S NEW COVENANT PEOPLE
October 6 Pentecost: God Indwells His Covenant People
October 13 Our Identity: The Grace-Shaped Family of God
October 20 Our Mission: The Mission, the Message, and the Messenger
October 27 Our Unity: United in Truth, Clothed in Grace
(Continued on page 4)
“When we begin to see the Bible as the story of redemption through Jesus Christ, God’s plan to rescue the
world from sin and death, our perspective changes. We no longer look primarily for what the Bible says
about us but instead see what it tells us about God and what He has done. After all, it is the gospel that
saves us, and when we encounter Jesus in the pages of Scripture, the gospel works on us, transforming us
into His image. We become God’s gospel project.” (from the Intro to God’s Story Part 2)

-ers for their time and love they have given the
Children’s Ministry Summer Sunday School pro-
gram. It is hard in the summer to juggle those
schedules. But you did it and we thank you very
much. You are a gift from God to the children and
to this ministry.
We have had parents, as well as some of
our Elders, take a sneak peek during our Sunday
program. We are getting ready for the Fall. We
have wonderful leaders already in place at the pre-
school; Awanas, and Los Amigos and we are gear-
ing up to start “The Gospel Project for Kids” on
September 1st. I think we all know what a jungle
it really is in this world, so please pray for us and
even help us out when you can. We are a church of
movers and shakers. If you can’t chase after the
children then just share your yummy bounty by
bringing fresh fruit or a snack once in a while for
one of the programs mentioned above.
Here’s What’s Happening!!!!
The Preschool has already started, if you
know friends with little ones please share all about
our wonderful preschool and staff. (760-728-1032)
In His Love,
Beth Ann — Children’s Ministries Director
At the beginning of every school year, we
remind our parents that their children are proof that
dreams and possibilities are endless when you believe
in God and you believe in them. As I begin my 21st
year as Director of your Preschool, and fifth year as
the Director of Children’s Ministries, I want to thank
the congregation for once again supporting our
Christian outreach to the children in your commu-
nity.
One of the things our preschool, Awana, Los
Amigos and Sunday school have great pride in, is that
in addition to their academic growth, we are responsi-
ble for their growth in Faith and Love in Jesus. We
are convinced of the fact that a healthy start in Faith
is a healthy start in life.
God told us to walk by faith and not by sight.
In this world today our children have become visual
learners; So our vision this year is to teach the chil-
dren to walk by faith. We hope to instill in them pure
hearts, and a good conscious. We will share with
them that faith by itself, without works, is dead. We
want to teach them to seek God and learn to be just.
By the end of this year each child under our purview
will be brave and strong and stand fast in the faith so
God will prosper them and they will know it was from
Him.
First, I want to thank the Sunday School lead
LOS AMIGOS
Los Amigos is our Children’s Ministry outreach to the Hispanic community of Fallbrook. For over 15 years, we have
offered after school tutoring to students 3rd through 6th grade. We meet each Tuesday afternoon during the school year
from 2:30 – 4:00. The tutors and children alike have a great time interacting with each other. Many of our children
never get the opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with an adult. In addition to our time at church, we take the
kids on several field trips each year. We plan to kick off our school year with a pool party. We will also visit Bates Nut
Farm in October.
Beginning this year on September 3rd, our program has gained such a reputation in Fallbrook, we already have chil-dren on a waiting list, and we have teachers in the schools ready to recommend students. Do you have a desire to make a difference in the life of a child? We need you! You don’t need to speak Spanish, as all of our kids speak Eng-lish. Please call Charlene Mann at (760)731-1084, or Terri Simpson at (760)728-1493 if you’d like to join us, or even just have a few questions. (Cont. on Page 4)

AWANA What on earth is AWANA? Awana is an acronym meaning “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed”, taken from 2 Timothy 2:15. Awana is a Bible-centered youth program, whose goal is to “reach all boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him”. The main focus of Awana is Bible-memorization, but the kids also play organized games and listen to a Bible object lesson.
We are moving into our seventh year of Awana here at SonRise, with club meetings each Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 through the school year. We have had about 45 kids here each week eager to learn about Jesus, while memorizing an amazing amount of Scripture.
Are you in Jr. High or High School, and looking for an awesome Bible Study? Jen Dugas leads our Trek and Journey studies on Thursday afternoons.
Awana starts on September 12th, with registration from August 29th through September 6th. Stop by the table and see what the excitement is all about! (Forms also available in the church office).
We are always in need of folks willing to listen to the children recite their Scripture. If you are curious about Awana and want to catch the “Awana Fever”, give Charlene Mann a call at (760)731-1084.

Julie Andrews, on Turning 79
To commemorate her birthday, actress/vocalist, Julie
Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's
Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One
of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favorite
Things' from the legendary movie 'Sound Of Music'.
H e r e a r e t h e l y r i c s s h e u s e d :
(Sing It!)
Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

(Note: Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation
from the crowd that lasted over four minutes
and repeated encores.)

SENIOR MOMENTS
Secrets to Feel Young The process of getting older is unavoidable, but feeling old is
optional. Here’s what you can do to feel young and alive.
APPRECIATE YOUR AGE: Whatever your regret from the past,
it’s over. Let it go. Literally re-program the way you think
about the past and the concept of growing older. Setting new
goals can give you more life now and help you live longer. Ac-
cording to a Yale study, people who had a positive mindset
about growing older lived about seven years longer than those
who grumbled about their age.
DON’T RETIRE FROM BEING USEFUL: Sure, you may have
earned the right to slow down and work less, but feeling that
you still make a difference is invigorating. Keep both the mind
and body moving by getting involved in volunteer activities and
exercise clubs.

Men’s Life Bible study resumes on Wednesday, September 4. We are begin-ning a new study in the book of 1 Corin-thians. The culture of the ancient city of Corinth was more like that of modern Amer-ica than perhaps any other city in the Ro-
man Empire. The church in Corinth had many of the same issues as the church in America today has.
Among the questions the apostle Paul tackled head-on are:
divisive attitudes in the church, questions of marriage and sexual morality, lawsuits
personal moral freedom and how that affects our relationships proper worship disagreements over spiritual gifts life after death financial contributions to the church
It’s hard to imagine a more relevant biblical book than 1 Corin-thians! We’ll be looking frankly at some of these hard questions as they come up in what Paul wrote.
The study meets at 7:00 a.m. each Wednesday in the Chapel. Chuck Boatman is the discussion facilitator. Pick up your study questions at the Men’s Ministry table in the Narthex.
Have you ever wondered about any of the various aspects of our beautiful, stained glass window? On Saturday Octo-ber 5, 2013 at 10:39 am, eight theologians will be sharing eight related sections of this iconic symbol in our sanctu-ary. Can you imagine so many scholars each given the task of hitting the nail on the head, but each under five min-utes? Immediately following this one-time-only event there will be a free luncheon--the catch is it is only free if you sign up before noon on Wednesday, October 2nd (Tickets are $10 at the door OR FREE IF you call 760.728.5804 to sign up…that is if you haven’t signed up already). The Beatles had it right in their song, All You Need is Love; There was, however, an author whose
words of love preceded that of George, Ringo, John & Paul….Paul, the apostle, stated that very
Biblical truth in the Book of Corinthians long before the craze of Liverpool’s Fab Four.
As a church, we have been seeking, asking and believing God to bring us new SCF family from near and far. As He
does, let’s welcome these new faces of all ages, color, shapes & sizes, with open arms! Remember...His love never
fails! I came across this story in David Jeremiah’s God Loves You, and was reminded of both, the beauty and impact
of love...especially God’s.
As I was walking (home from school), I saw a bunch of kids running toward him (Kyle). They ran at him, knocking
all his books out of his arms...His glasses went flying...He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My
heart went out to him...and I saw a tear in his eye...I handed him his glasses...We talked all the way home, and I car-
ried his books….Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began "Graduation
is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings,
maybe a coach... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you
can give them. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend (Kyle) with disbelief as he told the story of the
first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so
his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little
smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable." I heard the gasp go through the
crowd as this handsome, (now) popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at
me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment, did I realize it's depth.
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or
for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Let’s love...and impact some lives!

speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride. -Author Unknown
*************************************************
Wherever God sends us, He will guard our lives. Our per-sonal property and possessions are a matter of indifference, we have to sit loosely to all those things; if we do not, there will be panic and heartbreak and distress. That is the inwardness of the overshadowing of personal deliverance.
The Sermon on the Mount indicates that when we are on Jesus Christ’s errands, there is no time to stand up for ourselves. Jesus says, in effect, Do not be bothered with whether you are being justly dealt with or not. To look for justice is a sign of deflection form devotion to Him. Never look for justice I this world, but never cease to give it. If we look for justice, we will begin to grouse and to indulge in the discontent of self-pity—Why should I be treated like this? If we are devoted to Jesus Christ we have nothing to do with what we meet, whether it is just or unjust. Jesus says—Go steadily on with what I have told you to do and I will guard your life. If you try to guard it yourself, you remove yourself from My deliverance. The most devout among us become atheistic in this connection; we do not believe God, we enthrone common sense and tack the name of God onto it. We do learn to our own understanding, instead of trusting God with all our hearts. (MUH) — Oswald Chambers

Knowing the battle, and the glory
Was Yours.
I asked You what my ‘Goliath’ is
And I was surprised by your answer
“Fear,” You told me.
“Really?” I responded politely. “That’s interesting.”
I had to look far beneath the surface to find Your
meaning
Not fear of physical danger
Or even death
Fear of the judgment of others, yes, to some extent
But deeper, much deeper
Fear of failure.
Ouch.
You’re right, Father.
No one likes failure
But while I accept it in others
(They’re only human, after all)
I abhor it in myself.
I’ve had a problem with that ever since I was a small
child
The youngest of six children
Setting unrealistic goals for myself even then
(I cried the first time I made a mistake on a math
problem -
I was in first grade. Have I never grown up?)
To win approval, attention, love?
How many times has my fear held me back?
Fear that if I wasn’t sure I could succeed
It was too risky to try
How much of my life have I missed, Lord?
How much more could I have accomplished?
I know fear is not part of Your plan for me
And I’m not sure how to change what I have felt for a
lifetime
But I do know
That Yours is the battle
And Yours is the victory.
1 Samuel 17:47 “and that all this assembly may know
that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for
the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our
hands.”
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of
timidity, but of power and love and discipline.”
Gayle Kott recently returned from an unforgettable trip to the Holy Land with Pastor Jerome and 18 others. Gayle, a gifted poet and writer, was inspired to keep a daily journal of her pilgrimage, and the result was a series of very per-sonal and powerful modern day Psalms. At Pastor Jerome’s request, she has graciously agreed to share some of these poems with the entire church family over the next several months via the Chimes Newsletter. Our prayer is that you will be inspired and encouraged and drawn closer to the heart of Jesus through Gayle’s very intimate and beautiful poetry. — Pastor Jerome
In the Holy Land
Azeka
I came to Israel, Father
To look for You, I suppose
To try to see what You want from me
For me
But the first time I truly felt You speak to me there
Was at Azeka
Overlooking the Elah Valley
We stood there at the top of the hill
Under the olive trees
Standing green and strong and lovely
Blessing us with their shade.
As we gazed toward the valley
I could almost see Saul’s army camped on one hillside
And the Philistine army camped opposite them
Staring at each other with trepidation, perhaps
With Goliath, the giant, boldly strutting to the valley
floor
Taunting the Israelites,
Mocking the Living God.
Then I could envision David, still a teenager
And his older brothers scolding him
For thinking he merely wanted to watch the battle
When they thought he should be taking care of the sheep
I considered David’s courage
And his unwavering trust in You
As he prepared to fight the giant

it's maybe not quite so crowded or stressful, blah, blah,
blah and after September 11th, I guess I could just not
imagine living anywhere else. — Sigourney Weaver
If any of you have ever lived down south of the Mason-
Dixon line, you know that late September still means
summer heat. — Scott Porter
On the night of the 1st of September we observed for the
first time signs of the natives being in the neighbourhood.
Fires were seen on the low land near Cape Frederick
Henry, and at daylight we saw the natives with our
glasses. — William Bligh
My first day in Chicago, September 4, 1983. I set foot in
this city, and just walking down the street, it was like
roots, like the motherland. I knew I belonged here.
— Oprah Winfrey
The peculiar fascination which the South held over my
imagination and my limited capital decided me in favor of
Atlanta University; so about the last of September I bade
farewell to the friends and scenes of my boyhood and
boarded a train for the South.
— James Weldon Johnson

Hey hey hey...

Ba de ya, dancing in September...
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day...
