VICAR CHAD RADEMACHER

Luther Seminary assigned Chad Rademacher to be our pastoral intern for the 2018-2019 aca-demic year. Chad and his wife, Sara, have two children and they live in Ankeny, Iowa, which is a suburb of Des Moines. This November, they will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. Although Sara and their children will continue to live in Ankeny, they plan to regularly worship with us here at English Lutheran and become a part of our community.

Chad is a second career intern. Until last fall, he was the Regional General Manager of Matheson Tri-Gas in Des Moines where he has worked for the past 18 years. In college, Chad studied In-dustrial Welding and Metallurgy. He grew up in Omaha Nebraska and continues to be a Nebraska football fan.

When asked about his internship preferences, Chad indicated a desire to serve his internship in a congregation that embraced diversity, was demographically balanced and had an intentional missional focus. These interests fit English Lutheran well.

As a lay person, Chad started two Bible Stud-ies and helped establish Stephen Ministry in his home congregation. His interest in small groups complements Walking with God, our small group ministry. We Welcome, Worship WorkIn Christ

in the World&

Thank YouAs I reflect on my first year at English Lutheran as Director of Music, many beautiful memo-ries surface. The most beautiful though is the amount of support received from so many fellow musicians. I am overwhelmed with all who have shared musi-cal gifts with English. From those who served as cantor and the choir members, the ding-a-lings in the bell choir, the key-boardists and band members, the elementary school singers and youth band. And of course string and brass players who made our festive events FESTIVE!!

Thank you all!! I look forward to experiencing what next year will bring!

Trevor Director of Music

We are in need of special music for the summer services.

Please email me if you would like to share your musical gifts with the congregation. All ages, levels and styles welcome!!

VICAR CHAD continued from front page

our senior members where Chad could provide leadership and experi-ence.

In his profile, Chad wrote the fol-lowing: My identity (as a Christian public leader) has been shaped by many experiences over the years; person-ally, professionally, and spiritually. It is a living eco-system that has been, and will continue to be influ-enced by my faith, my family, my friends, and my community. It is a conviction in my heart, claimed in my identities as a husband, father, brother, son, child of God; that I am good enough and loved while I am simultaneously a saint and a sinner.

Vicar Chad will begin his intern-ship at English Lutheran Church on August 15, 2018.

Pastor’s Press

For as long as I can remember, my bucket list included a trip to the Holy Land. When in college, I had an opportunity to participate in an archeological dig at Caesarea Maritima but I thought I needed to earn money more than travel to the Holy Land. It was not one of my smarter decisions.

Last Christmas, Martha Monson Lowe offered to take Carol and me through the Holy Land. Martha’s husband, George, was teaching at Dar al-Kalima University in Beth-lehem and Martha was available to show us around. On the Monday after Easter, Carol and I, and my sister and brother-in-law flew from Chicago to Tel Aviv. We hired a Palestinian driver named Nader and for nearly two weeks the six of us traveled around the Holy Land.

We saw the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of the Holy Sepul-chre, the traditional site of Jesus’ crucifixion. We visited the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized and spent a couple days in Galilee visiting Capernaum, the Mount of Beatitudes and Nazareth.

We stayed on the Mount of Olives at the Lutheran World Federation compound overlooking the Old

City of Jerusalem. Many days we ended up wander-ing through the narrow streets of Old Jerusalem crowed with shops and tourists speaking every language under the sun.

Our primary insight from the trip was the faith, hope and gracious-ness of the Palestinian Muslims and Christians. We gained a deeper awareness of their suffering and re-siliency. They live under an Israeli military occupation that severely restricts their mobility and creates a tremendous economic hardship. There is a huge wall, checkpoints to pass from one sector to another and machine gun toting Israeli sol-diers throughout the West Bank.

One afternoon, we sat in the shade of a cave on a hill outside Beth-lehem overlooking one of 130 Is-raeli Settlements in the West Bank. Daoud Nassar, a member of Christ-mas Lutheran Church, explained his response to Israeli attempts to force him off his ancestral land. Daoud suggested there are four possible responses: 1) Resorting to violence and fighting the occupation;

HOLY LAND continued from pg 3

2) Resignation and becoming a victim – to sit down and cry; 3) Running away – to leave Palestine; 4) Seeking justice through non-violent resistance. Like Gandhi and the Reverend

Martin Luther King Jr., Daoud has chosen the path of seeking justice through non-violent resistance.

The slogan embraced by Daoud and many Palestinians goes like this: We refuse to be enemies.

The Palestinians’ commitment to love rather than hate, to believe and trust in a God of justice, and to resist the occupation non-violently inspires me.

Join us this summer as we travel to Savannah, GA. We have reser-vations for the first 10 people to register. We are still working out the details as for the work we will be doing there, but we know God will put us in positions where we are needed most but we do know there is a place for anyone.

We are working with Lutheran Disaster Services of Georgia. We will be doing physical labor assisting members of the community or surrounding community with repairs from flood and tornado dam-age. They have big and small projects from cleaning, hauling debris, painting, repairing/replacing drywall, working on roofs, rebuilding steps, and various projects as these. We have a list of small tools we are asked to bring for these projects.

We will be traveling on July 28-29, working Monday-Friday, and trav-eling back Aug. 4-5. Housing will be through a local church and we plan to overnight in hotels while traveling.

This is an Inter-generational trip for high school students 16 years or older. Anyone traveling between the ages of 11-15 must be accom-panied by a parent.

Registration forms can be found at the Welcome Center with more details. To book your reservation, a $100 deposit is due by June 15. Total cost of the trip will be determined once everyone is registered but participants portion will not exceed $325.

Contact Niki Pohnl for more details.

During the hazy, lazy days of summer, take time to “bloom and grow” with a good book. “Pick” a title from our collec-tion in the library and use the self check out procedure to complete the card in the book pocket. Don't forget DVD's are also available in the church library.

The Little Free Library con-tinues to be used. There is always a need for additional titles. Donations for the LFL may be put in the box on the counter in the library.

Thanks to everyone who searched, found, and turned in library books. Please con-tinue to be on the lookout for church library materials that may be hidden in your clos-ets, bookcases or children's rooms.

April turned out to be a good month financially for our congrega-tion. Easter was early in the month and we also had five Sundays. This helped our receipts as Simply Giving and other electronic giving increased nearly $5000 over April 2017. This helped offset declines in Envelope and Other General offerings. For the year to date our receipts are about $9000, or more than 3%, over last year. Our disbursements have also increased from last year.

The Stability Triangle has increased considerably for the year be-cause of some one-time expenses for property, technology and per-sonnel. We expect these will even out over the course of the year. The Five Big Rocks category also had some one-time expenses this year.

For the month of April we had a very nice gain of over $12,000, which reduced our year to date deficit to about $3500. We are about $14,000 behind last year for the year to date, but we should be able to reduce that amount over the summer months. We thank you for your generous contributions this year and look forward to a wonderful summer. We will see you in church!
