Bylines on Prayer . . . Prayer is “talking to God.” Right? Though that may be the pre-vailing thought, it is a very limiting, if not destructive, definition. More times than not, deep and meaningful prayer is, and
should be, the practice of “listening to God.” The question then is: “How does one “listen” to God?” The #1 method is studying God’s Word verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book.
“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.” II Timothy 2:15 (NKJV)
The “Men of Integrity” devotional for August 22 says it this way:
“By most measures, success or failure in the Christian life de-pends on how much of God’s Word we get into our hearts and minds on a regular basis and how well we obey it. The Bible
teaches everything we need to know about God. If we neglect the study of Scripture, then our spiritual life will ultimately fall
into disrepair.”
Have you ever noticed (1) how difficult it is to hear what some-one else is saying to you when you are talking at the same time, more concerned about getting your point across . . . and (2) when there are noisy distractions around you? Therein lies
another pathway to “listening to God.”
Suzanne Fisher, in Amish Peace, states in the chapter titled, “A Sacred Silence:” “Silence is not the absence of communication but a powerful expression of it.” Note the following excerpts from her book as she quotes Ruby Zook.
“‘It is only in the silence that we can hear Christ, . . . There is no substitute for silence. No trick. No shortcut. In our selfishness we can imagine that we give God the gift of our time in silence, that we are offering something at his altar. We have it back-wards. He gives us the gift of his wisdom, but it is only available if we can silence our noisy selves, the noisy world, and find him and his wisdom within. It isn’t a question of being comfortable with silence. Silence is not about comfort. It is about obedi-ence.” Silence emphasizes what you do over what you say.’”
As a closing thought . . . Jeff Chu, a contributor to Daily Guide-posts 2016, concluded his August 30 devotional with:
“Amid life’s bustle, I often forget the importance of putting down my pen and opening my eyes, of closing my mouth and open-ing my ears. God is with me always, yes. But what kind of travel companion am I if I don’t pause to listen to what He has to say?”
A question we all need to ask ourselves . . . - Tom Williams

FCC KIDS
Maybe you’ve been wondering what’s been going on with FCC Kids lately.
Maybe you were hoping someone would write an article in the caller to tell you
all about it. Well you are in luck! If you’ve been wondering what’s up with
FCC Kids I’m going to tell you all about it!
We kicked off our 2016-17 season on August 17th and started a series
on the Armor of God. We’ve learned about the belt of truth and the breastplate
of righteousness as well as the shoes of the gospel of peace. Each week we’ve
taken an deeper look at what it means to put on each piece of armor and how
“with Jesus, we can win against sin”. Over the next four week we will continue
looking at the remaining pieces and how they can help us in our battle with
temptation.
We started a new “Theme Night” this year where the third Wednesday
of each month we have a different theme. We’ve had a fun time with “pajama
night” and “team spirit” night and look forward to “costume night” and “ugly
sweater night” coming up.
We also continue to have a great time with crafts and surprise station as
well as fun snacks and awesome games. Each week is its own adventure and
packs more fun than a barrel of monkeys…however fun that is.
In Christ, Bob and Lindsey
