President’s Report I hope you all took notice of Martin Bailey’s message this week about ‘word‐of‐mouth
advertising. Martin showed us that this type of ‘advertising’ is very effective, but we
did not have time to get to the ‘how’ to do it.
I have tried to think of ways to make our conversations about Rotary more
Informative and attractive.
At various levels of the Rotary organisation, the ‘Rotary moment’ has been tested and well received. In the
Rotary moment, members recall the specific moment, where they felt they belonged to the organisation
and could contribute to it in a meaningful way. This moment of insight is full of emotion and thereby makes
an immediate impact on the listener.
Another idea that came to me is that we could create a template for topics to share. Brian mentioned that
we were entrusted with more than $350,000 to spend on two new projects. Wow! Various foundations and
organisations, including Captain’s Choice and the Wheeler Foundation, have worked with our club to
initiate international projects to the tune of millions of dollars. Something to be proud of.
We are inspiring and assisting the City of Maroondah to become a “City of Wellbeing”. Imagine how this
will impact on everyone in our community; imagine how this idea will spread to other councils. Something
to be proud of.
We are taking small steps in attacking loneliness in our community. Worldwide, such an initiative has been
taken by maybe a few dozen organisations. Something to be proud of.
We are working together with other service clubs and organisations, recognising that collaboration is
essential to get better results. Think of Lions, Rotaract, Men’s Sheds, COTA, MELBA College, Maroondah
City Council, just to name a few. Something to be proud of.
What approach would you like to see in our word‐of‐mouth campaign?
John
Welcome home dinner
The District Youth Exchange Committee has extended an open invitation to all to attend a dinner to
welcome back exchange students, including Elijah who was sponsored by our club. This will happen on
Friday 13th February at the Mulgrave Country Club in Wheelers Hill at 7:00 for 7:30PM. The cost of the 3‐
course dinner is $30 per person, with drinks at bar price. Please advise Secretary Joy or President John by
31 January if you’d like to attend. Payment in person to John at one of our regular club meetings, as we are
sending one booking sheet with payment to the organising committee.
Jeannette Griffiths The partners of long serving Rotarians who knew Jeannette are very sad at her passing. We would like to
send our condolences to her family and close friends.
Jeannette was a very pleasant person, easy to talk to and had many interests outside the home‐ including
supporting Fred in his Rotary service.
Her love of photography was remembered by a fellow ‘Rotary Camper’, another partner spoke of her love
of tennis and of course she had gathered a group of friends to play in many of the Rotary Golf Days. In
more recent years Jeanette enjoyed catching up with old Rotary Friends at the monthly casual lunches
usually held at Yering Meadows. She really relished having scones jam and cream for lunch on those days!
We admired the quiet pride she always took in her appearance, never a hair out of place and makeup
perfect‐ how DID she do it?
We will miss her company and always remember her with fondness.

Chairman Ross Taylor with our Guest Speaker Martin Bailey.
Chairman’s Report
Tuesday January 27, 2015
Our Guest Speaker for this evening was Martin Bailey, a Word of Mouth Marketing
Specialist. Martin based his presentation around the following figures:
90%
14%
2,500 – 3,500
Ninety percent of all purchases are based on recommendations.
Fourteen percent of people believe in the message carried by advertisements.
We are bombarded by between 2,500 and 3,500 advertisements each day.
An example of how Word of Mouth Marketing helped malnourished children in
Vietnam was examined to highlight the techniques.
Steve Jobs of Apple fame was an exponent of Word of Mouth Marketing.
The presentation was lively with audience participation.
Martin Bailey Biography
After 13 years working in productivity improvement with the likes of Rolls Royce, Royal Bank of Scotland
and Josiah Wedgwood & sons I changed direction and went to work in marketing. For the next 8 years I
learnt all about personal recommendation. I trained over a thousand business owners in this area and am
pleased to say that my involvement resulted in a gain of over $270 million revenue for these companies.
I love Word of Mouth Marketing. It is the most relied upon, the most cost effective yet least understood
form of marketing in the market place. It’s honest, reliable and it’s the customer’s favourite. Steve Jobs was
a great exponent of WOMM and this helped him to move Apple to No1. I would like to share with you
some of these WOMM ‘secrets’ for you to use and benefit from in your own organisation.
