Chapter 6

Daniel Disobeys.

From Heaven on high the legion commenced. All weapons aboard; of mighty

swords and bows; of strong-melted knives and spears to engulf; they were all made to the

ready. The tempest wears are known; earth sits but a spectre of time away. The galaxy isnear; all the planets they do roam and pass through, pressing further to what destination is

to their purpose. Earth sits round the corner; the sun of stars does locate. The fire from their

travels illuminate a spark of comets, thirteen in all; descending low with Gabriel and

Metatron to the front; Aero and Daniel coming as the fair trails of all.

But as to what is unexpected and not known, Daniel veers off as they penetrate theatmosphere and cloudy skies; his torch of comet strains in other avenues and ways. No one

sees, but to the last. Aero spots young Daniel going off course, and so to follow the

wayward angel he goes. He is unsure if this was to be the intent or mistake by Daniel. But

still he pushes faster still to descend and fall into the mid-days skies. The roar of his

travels; the thunder it makes; the occupants of earth look high for that sight whichdescends. Here Daniel lands and tumbles in hazardous waste, down upon the lowlands of

Ireland; southwest McCarthy he plays.

Daniel gathers to his feet; and those warring angels features he does present. The

inhabitants either ran in fear and fright; such a large being cast from sky to earth. There

were screams about to see the sight of Daniel walking unregulated about. Children hid

underneath their carts; parents hollered and faded; more men of distrust did come, yelling

to center their attention where Daniel went. Some took lasso and encircled the young angel;

landing home about his wrist and to another; there they attempted to bind. Yet only to fail

as Daniel tossed each man over his shoulders ten feet away; ripping so the small ropes from

his wrists; overturning carts, tables of fruits and garments, and frightening horses along theway.

Oh bounds! one did say, A beast from hades it must be! Stop his way!

Gracious child! A mother crawled to her abandoned child; this to stop Daniel and

attempt to aid; he leaning down and grabbing the child as if to protect; this but stirred more

to come in relief, My baby! Assist me Help my child!

More men came and appeared on horseback, with weapons drawn and ready to end

all with Daniel. He did spin, with child in hand, taking such the shield he possessed fromhis rear; forearm set into the handles, he bent low and thrust the mighty shield into earths

ground with a roar, thunder, lightening and quakes from natures very armament.

The Lord Commands!He did shout that shook the earth all round.

Seeing the mother in her distress and looking upon the gaze of this child as she

wept, Daniel bent low and set the child free. And so quickly she ran to her mother and went

into her mothers refuge. Daniel moved without warrant or presuppose through their midst

like a tornado unattended. His pace much longer than that of any horses raid, and as much

he outpaced them all to find lands and long pastures and fields far into the horizon; with

cattle and sheep to stretch out along those long lawns. And as they grazed, did they part

like the red sea once Daniel pushed through.

There above sat a ridge Daniel could hear giggles and play; laughter and toys of

humor. His curiosity much enlightened, he rose from the ridge and met with its crest,

seeing thus at the top a fifty foot waterfall rolling down into a pool and pond; cliffs that

bent just as high and splashing to the lagoons below. There, within the waterways and

waters highest peek were women bathing, nude, and unclothed for him to see.

Huh?? his ears did perk up and his eyes looked hard in wonder; to stare and seem

hypnotized by what he saw. No pardon he made. He wasnt prepared to view; nor to know

the proper etiquette in modesty and restraint.What are you doing? one naked woman cried out; picking up a rock and hurling it

his way. Daniel ducked to dodge its path, yet another came and struck him in the chest-

plate.Get away from here! Another yelled in profanity, You arent welcome!!

Those who were on land dove into the pool to conceal; all the while screaming and

yelling for Daniel to leave.Its evil! he heard another cry, I tell you! More rocks were thrown and Daniel,

at last, left the women to their wash and cleanings.

Down the valley meadow he went; head strong and intent to find his pursuit.

Out of the clear blue sky came the roar of another comet descending with supreme

speed; the roar ensued; the meadows bent; the trees leaned away; and out-struck the

landing of another before his step it was Aero.

He said nothing in a word; his face all in force; stern to the expression; no anger hebeset. Straight towards Daniel he took claim on this path, to conflict and halt Daniels

travels as he went. Aero pushed Daniel to the floor; which, in turn, Daniel rose to

counteract - the angels in a raucous stalemate.

What are you doing? Aero roared.

Nothing

Nothing?? Aero pushed harder still, This isnt our mission!

I have something to deal with first

What? Aero pushed further to goat Daniel into a fight.

Daniel said nothing more, only to lower his head and push past Aero; who, in twirl,did rise and cast to flight, spin about, and land where Daniel walked.

There is no greater purpose than to the Father! Aero claimed, though Daniel did

not speak; as if to retire and not wish to say, What? What else is best?

Daniel kept to his silence.

Are you going to let me pass?

For what purpose??!

Let me pass

Aero stared upon his friend with anger and disappointment alike; kindred souls to

his expression, which both lept out to conflict in his eyes.

God, you do offend thus, Aero pointed to Daniel.

If He knew my reasons

But He does! Aero watched Daniel pass by him once more; he followed in his

pursuit, This is betrayal to the Father Jesus will warrant me to intercede!

You best stay clear Aero! Daniel turned to halt Aero.

You give no reasons for your conduct Daniel, he pleaded, Gabriel will come and

cast you back into Heaven for this insurrection.

This is no betrayal! Daniel roared.

You do deceive, Aero pointed again, The Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit; all atonce Daniel You do deceive; for whatever purpose and intent You do deceive.

My reasons are pure

Then ask it of the Father, Aero counter-debated, and let Him decideI can not, Daniel appeared moody in his disposition, Its too late

Daniel moved past Aero and pushed up towards the ridgeline and out beyond the

vast, rolling grasslands which lay in his view.At least, Aero was heard in Daniels rear, What is, to this purpose here?

Daniel turned, stalled, appeared to look within and think with an inward gaze; his

feelings seemed to stream through into his look. He said nothing to the start, until

Daniel turned and swept through this valley in a high pace; at times walking; at

times flying, with spins and curls and back-flips and twirling descents.

Remember the Father he could see Aero to his front one last time.A smile resonated through his expression as if to, at last, concede.

Wear your garments, Aero smiled, Earth children are not used to seeing the likes

of you. Conceal your appearance, as the Father so spoke, and hide your purposes so that

you will not be disclosed

Jesus, before the legion lept from Heaven and into this trial abyss, warned of their

necessity to guard their angelic identities. And with this piece of garment did he lay to

each. Once worn and placed onto their Heavenly bodies, they would become and appear

like human to His earthly children, and bring no reason to startle those who would witness

their presence.Daniel took caution to this advice.

And do not unleash your sword with hand to protect yourself, Aero further

warned, But only to protect othersNo need to acquire the Fathers judgment any more

by the harsh and rude venture you seek

Do well, dear friend Daniel spoke in a way for Aero to take his leave on.

I shall advise Gabriel of your whereabouts

How will he impose?

Not well, Aero looked about Daniel, I suspect Nor to it, will he carry any

understanding with Daniel, this to be your journey Accept the fate with which it

provides.

I have thought of this often, Daniel responded, A journey I am prepared to

take

Gods speed and deliverance, Aero spoke in final, and he was off.

Like lightening to the clouds above, he ascended and took a leap from all sight. The

echoes roared and faded in an instance; the hallowed grounds before Daniel were to be

unknown; fraught by danger; employed with the lack of wisdom; but that which the man-

heart within him does attest. The valiance in his step; the beauty to his rise and flight; the

birds will stall and wonder on. The clouds, earth, and sky anew; not known from whatHeaven bestows; the lands felt fresh and cold to his feet.

He felt to be mortal; to feel the wind as it blew; the blades of grass tickle to his legs

and toes; the chill of earths window now opened to be exposed; his ears did elevate to hearthe difference between two worlds; the soft touch of water on his hands as he went by one

waterfall to inspect; the way sunlight danced to shine in his palm when he held the cold

liquid for it to settle through; the smell of something odd and everything all in tune; thetouch of his face by hand and forearm; the leaves of a tree cuddle to his cheek as he passed

by.

This was the place and home he held but for one day; a child he was then; spanked

from birth and sent aloft; never to know the world that was lost. Till now, he comes to

inspect; the opportunity by unintended grace from Heaven; should the Father allow? He

will learn the consequence of his trade soon; and God will judge according to His word.

Daniel moved quickly to hide about in a worked field of mud and hay; his feet tosink low and his ankles pressed to his shins. He dare not fly or be exposed; the locals are

about in pursuit and will deliver an unbridled attempt to take him in. So by the thatch-

roofed barn he hid to deliver the garments of costume and make; outpoured Daniel to look

as any normal man would.

Of youth; of looks; nearly twenty-two to those who took eye for a view; of

handsome sway; eyes of blue pearls; hair of flowing blonde like the deep burning day of

earth; of normal size and height now; his camouflage is set. The pathway was dirt-filled

and speckled; the cold breath on his exhale now moved before him as he went and lingered

about.Several villagers did pass him by with an odd trail of looks; but that which was not

of knowing him, than the beast they so proclaimed him as before. He moved amongst them

in the small town. Men from a distance took notice and speculated who Daniel might be;

and talked amongst themselves to foresee.

Who do you suppose this is? One brute man of grunts and growls did project.

There he went to Daniels front and object; a bully of sorts who wished to make his mark.

You there! he cried out, pulled round Daniels shoulder to square him, What is

your business here? Are you one of Elfdmans men?

I know not him Daniel turned to hide in retreat.

You best know him, the man swung Daniel about once more, You talk like

him

I assert, Daniel did say, I know not him

Ill say different, the man took an aggressive swipe at Daniels face; which sent

him low to hold his mouth in his hand; to be the first of pain; such a strange notion and

sense, Daniel thought, You are one of his men! Get up I say!!

More men joined in to urge the brute man on, and whip this stranger into

submission.

Let me have a poke! Another man did yawn and bring Daniel up by his garment;so sending him to the ground once more with another punch. Daniel did not fend for

himself.

Stop it Drury! A woman, in youth and beauty; of little more in age than Danielappeared to come forward and step between them all; she bent low to Daniel in aid, the

man has no weapons to defend himself with!

His hands, the brute man laughed, his feet He kicked Daniel on his side; thisabove all else brought most pain to Daniel and coiled him into a fetal position.

Come she whispered to Daniel softly; pulling him to a stance when he had the

measure to stand and look this man eye to eye.

What? the other man growled, You will take this vagabond in?

Im sure he has home, the woman looked over Daniel to dress what she thought

his wounds were to be; there were none.

Well make him bleed before he travels aboutElfdmans spy and consort! Thebrutish man grabbed hold of Daniel once more; spun him round, spit to his rear and kicked

him boot-worth towards the ground further; the crowd to sway and move round. Though

the lady held quick to her thoughts and pulled about a coarse knife to stick up under the

brute mans right ear; he swallowed hard at this objection and took a wiser pause.

Ill cut your ear from your lobe, she swore on him; holding the knife stiff to press

on him, If be the test Ill pass it clear and youll be a man with one less ear

She pressed harder to the underside of his ear.

Do as I say! She swore, And let him free! The ear goes sir, if you press on this

further! Her other hand grabbed roughly on his front hair line, Or the throat goes! Its aquicker sore! It bleeds the river red to flood! You make the move Drury!

You are a mad woman! The brute man seemed to be full with fear now.

Mad as a scorpion in a fight! You wish to tell? After I am done, youll have no

voice box to speak with! Her anger seemed to bite through her teeth as she took to grit

hard on them.

I concede! he now pleaded, I concede!

Then off you be! She pushed him with her own boot into his rear and he fell,

headfirst, into the muddish pool about. All took on a laugh at his contrary demise, You

have other plays of foolery to transact I say, leave this man alone

The woman pulled Daniel up, with loving arms and tender ways, and she placed him

into her rough carriage, drawn by two horses which appeared to be much bothered by

Daniels presence. The horses did buck slightly until the woman came to them and soothed

their temperament into some minor calm. They were off along the hard patch of roadway;

into the long valleys and past the herds adrift; the handles of the carriage went to rock them

about like tumble weed in the precarious desert wind.

Where are you from? She asked.

I dont know this land Daniel replied.

Thats obvious, she smiled and corner-eye stared on him, You adrift; a loner?This can be said

Where were you heading?

If you knew to my past, Daniel raised his eyes to show her there were no wombs,you might be amazed

Perhaps, she smiled again, looked about his face, remarkableHe took good

strength over your eye, but you dont bleed?Bleed? Daniel was curious to this word.

Yes, silly man, she laughed, Injury; when you fight, you bleed!

I am not familiar to this word, Daniel looked ahead.

You must be foreign, she surmised, Which country Your dialect is unknown

dont think French, Dutch, Germanic, Polish, Russiannone of theseYou dont have an

accent

I am, Daniel calmly stated, none of theseThen where are you from?

A land unknown

You wish to remain a mystery; a secret alright then, can you work? The fields?

A field hand? Can you work the grounds?

I can Daniel replied, I have brief business here

And what might that be?

Daniel did not speak; but kept to his silence.

Alright then; mystery it is At least tell me your name

Daniel, he weakly spoke out, I am Daniel.She paused and looked at him as though a strange thought crossed into her mind;

this, by all accounts, brought her expression to look concerned, Daniel, you say?

Yes, this is my name, Daniel was droll when he replied.

A common name, but not too common, she looked at him strangely, Something

about you though well, no matter, my name is Dressel. Not as common as your

namebut it means thrasher of grain I have worked all my life in the fieldsfeel my

hands!

Daniel took to rub her hand with his; the palms were coarse, of strong calluses and

that of a person who spent much of her life in the open air and in work during the light

hours.

Mother has been very sick of late and is unable to work the fields. Its just me and

my father, and my older brother. We could use another hand to help; until the growing

season is over You can work for your keep Well feed you and keep a roof over your

head Thats all we have to offer You look pretty strong and able she paused, I

talk too much

Yes

You will do it then?

Yes Daniel was last to speak.Their remaining travel was uncommon; silent; more of sightseeing on the natural

landscape and the growing green fields that were sitting like carpets over the lands. They

passed by castles; of serfs adorned; that reached to the sky and seemingly beyond; ofmassive structures with many courtyards and ancient wreathes; of perched windows as big

as men; of guards in loft and motes below; greenery crawling up the sides; of oldest stones

packed one to one on high.Have you ever seen anything like this? Dressel marveled as they passed, Ill

gather you havent seen anything like this before in your country

I have

Have I heard of such a place? She wondered out loud, though as not to imply it as

a question; but suppose he may answer it, if he may.

Perhaps you have Daniel looked on her for the first time. She smiled and

seemed to have some charm for him, though he did not budge and kept to his straight look.Daniel was fain in asking of Dressel to guide him towards the home of his

childhood; not to know whether he will offend or give her pause in such a wake of knowing

he was in search of someone she did know, she did not know, or this might be a family not

liked to his own Mulligan family. He would wait for the moment to reveal his intentions.

They would arrive along the latter days fall. The sun had abandoned into the

nearing sunset; some clouds astray and casting out the burgeoning hues of orange, red,

burgundy glows, with rays sprinkling through to cast shadows unlike Daniel had ever

witnessed before.

Daniel moved from the wagon when they came to this humble home sitting on acrest above the higher hill around. His look drew attraction to the blazing sunset he was to

behold; the lantern light of that day growing dim and the wick of time fading from view.

Darkness was not all to his understanding; no shadows to Heaven be born. But here, on

earth, this was all the common fields, and he would need to know this better.

An elderly man came to strain and come from the home; his hands worn; his knees

too weak; and a shadow of another younger version of himself came forward in follow.

Dressel spoke of her mother, though she did not attend

Dressel, the father smiled and covered his eyes from the waning sun, Youve

brought me a young thatchling; a young prospective beau; good shoulders to work about

the farm and lands, he pressed onto Daniels shoulders as if to imply, It has been a hard

winter; and we do hope for a bountiful spring to follow

His name is Daniel Dressel spoke as her father shook about Daniels hand. It

was an odd custom to Daniel, who, by his reaction, did not know what to make of this.

John the elder man replied, John Mulligan

Daniels eyes lit up from that inward glow; of not outwardly produced for show, for

they did not see the manner to his enlightenment. This was the harbor he was in search of;

the earthly kingdom he was once ago to live and breathe by. The Heavens do answer with

unintentional glory; his earthly father before him; his sister and brother the same. At last tobe in reunion and find each one again. There was a shock which made his body tremble,

and they thought he might fall by that sudden sickness; this revelation as lightening and

thunder from above.During his presence in Heaven he often imagined what his earthly family would be

like. Would they be as him; the reflections born and come alive; spirits to connect; the

souls of all tied together. In the pools of Heaven he would sit and watch the ripples glow,and show him the face that looked back; to see something of age to be as his father, his

mother. His loving sister and brother to have airs and breathe as he; where hearts of another

and souls do breach the internal ways of a family tree.

He was not born for this purpose; to live a normal life as one from earth would see.

But the concealment of something new, where Heaven did know and influence; the

outcome of which is still yet to be brought into view. His life; a travelers want; lands

spectacular and purposes identical; the seat of which is still unset.Is there something which troubles you Daniel? Dressel grabbed on his arm.

No, Daniel made a weak attempt to smile; looking to them all with a different

gaze than before, I have come very far, and have been to many trails

Then rest is the need, John smiled on his unknown son, But before this, you will

enjoy us in meal. Tomorrow, we begin and will work the fields at dawn Ah, but first, my

son Christopher

Daniel was formally introduced to his elder brother.

And of your wife Daniel quietly supposed.Johns smile evolved into a frown.

She has been most weak of late; nearly unable to move. Cast to bed the whole day

through At times, her mind does wander and thinks she sees what is not. There is a

strange spirit which has cast within her I have had the father come to inspect her, but he

had spoken there is nothing he can do he grew more grimace at this thought, I fear the

worst will come soon But we have her still And as long as this is so, we will rejoice in

our relations

John was inherently a happy man; more to smile and be with glee than any other

emotion. His heart was in the correct placement; well grounded all his life through.

Reverent to the Father and a refined example of what a Christian soul would do. Daniels

siblings were alike and had the shadow of their father; and as so, were destined for Heaven

too.

But his mother, Daniel did wonder within. What makeup was of her; her soul

encased by the Fathers Glory; was there to be more, of relations to endure? Trials will

come all through earthly life, but to the mantle of the soul; what comes of this? Faith is

what Daniel was told. Faith, in all, to the Father, will sustain; keep your eyes there; the

Heavens do ask. For no manner of disease or foul or pestilence or loss or evil will falter

the soul and try hard its endurance for Faith. God has assured; the Son made complete.Dinner was soon to be brought about this humble home. The table set and made

warm with laughter and family tradition. Daniel had not come to eat before, nor had he any

knowledge of how to conduct himself. He was deliberate, observant, and careful to watchas they did lead.

PratiesDaniel? John passed to him a roughed-out bowl full of potatoes. He took

about it and pressed his fork into one, placed it on his plate and watched about the others asthey continued to push bowls round. Cabbage, gleaned and cooked; oats of porridge and

bread; halibuts of small fillets and a small crest of fish soup; goats milk cast into glasses

from the farm animals milked that day.

To the blessings we giveJohn took them to prayer, Lord, bless this food to our

nourishment; food to make our body whole and able to work; to give love to life; and make

happiness within our home

All said Amen to affirm.Well Daniel John smiled on him unexpectantly, eat!

Daniel watched them all partake of their food differently, so he did not know which

one to mimic most closely; a variance of all as he made his attempt. The praties first; his

knife stuck to the heart, and down to cut in half; bend low he did grabble with his mouth

and face about it, and to make all a mess as he went.

Dressel laughed, and so too did Christopher. John halted his own refreshments and

stared on Daniel with such the illogical stare.

Where did you say you were from?It is a bit of distance

I should say, Johns eyebrows lifted high, a very far distance indeed

Dressel caught Daniels concerted gaze with a wink and a smile. She was measuring

Daniels motions as he proceeded to make best of what he had no knowledge of. He looked

at his glass, felt the bottom of it as he raised it high, looked about the room to see them all

attentive on his every move; and so he sipped a bit of the milk as his eyes came roaming

through above the glass highest rim. Then to come up and cast out a most sour expression

at the taste; as if the milk was ten days old; or a year late.

I assure you, Christopher claimed, It was milked today It isnt sour; but quite

fresh He took about a sip himself, and to find it the best he had yet to devour, See?

No need to drink the milk if you dont like Daniel You can drink water

instead

On occasion we have cod, herring, salmon and haddock, John professed, When

we have good barter for trade, and we can find a good fisherman to trade with. Mostly

clothes and woven baskets we make Dressel is the best at basket weave anywhere

around

He looked proud on his daughter at this feat; and she so smiled bashfully in return.

The meal remained an adventure for Daniel and a roll of laughter for the rest. Still,he wondered about his mother Mary, and where she was to be presently. In the darkened,

deep-pressed corner of this home came a stir of sorts; a wrestle of uneasiness by someone

coming from their sleep.John! a voice cried out, Do attend to me!

It was Mary in her weakest estate.

John went in a hurry without a moments delay. They could hear him speak to herwith muddled language that was hard to overhear. Dressel and Christophers look turned

from happy lark to deep concern at the mere thought of their mothers distress. Daniel

turned halfway around to see if he could spot the silhouettes roaming about; and John

giving his mother comfort.

May I go to her? Daniel asked.

Perhaps it would be best not Christopher spoke free, but only to find Daniel rise

from his seat and proceed. Dressel placed her hand on her brother Christopher to advise,and let Daniel go and assist if he could.

It was only a fraction of steps; of murky dimensions and not easily seen corners. But

as he did follow the soft and low voices, Daniel came quickly to the foot of his mothers

bed.

Mary was indeed a victim of distress and anxiety, though John tried helplessly to

comfort her. The marriage bond of strength and love; though they both were required to go

through this affliction, one-to-one, together.

How long has she been this way? Daniel asked.

John looked upon him as though, in a moments thought, this was some manner ofintrusion. Yet he relinquished and decided to answer.

For a decade or more, he was somber in his approach, Yet of gradual slide and

decline, her body had weakened through the years. This continued in an unrelenting

fashion, and now she had come to be most feeble in her state There is nothing more, but

to comfort, in all

And who does this approach me?! Mary warned when she to look on Daniel for

the first time. Her manner was brash and full in anger, as much as she could rile to assert,

though when she laid eyes on him; all grew soft and with peace. Their eyes did lock, and

Daniel moved lovingly to her bedside, lowered himself, and settled his hand upon her

ankles; never to cease his view from hers. There was a pause in silence as they did, at last,

re-unite.

Mary, John bent lower to her ear, This is Daniel

Daniel Marys eyes enlarged; her hand reached for his; her mouth gapped as

though she found her long lost revelation, My son You have returned

John struggled to respond; his look pressed towards Daniels expression which

remained to his mother, as if he too, knew it was indeed his return at last.

Mary, John conspired, Daniel died at birth; long agoThis is another Daniel

He has come to help with the land; the farm; to aid us if he canNo, she kept her stare on Daniel, A mothers womb does know the bounty of her

child This is Daniel I know this to be true She weakly proposed.

Mary, John smiled in a fake manner, Our son died long ago This is anotherDaniel He came for a time He has come from a great distance

I know he has, she smiled as broad as happiness could take her smile to be, So

good of you to come DanielYour mothers heart has waited long for this So good ofyou to come, my little Daniel And to this, she pressed her hand lovingly to his, as they

clasped hard by this vibrant embrace.

Mary John insisted.

A mother knows Mary spoke. Truth always prevails This is our long lost

DanielAnd he has come home, at last

Their look to one another lasted for as much as time would allow. John held himself

not to press further; only to allow her to believe what she believed since all else had failed.A curious hope, though not defined or born from what was true, was better than none so

he felt. And let this be as her waning time on earth permits; that her prodigal son has come

to carry her home.

John rose and passed through to place a hand on Daniels shoulder. Mary bent high,

with all strength that remained, to clasp her hand upon Daniels cheek, smile with a kiss

upon his forehead, and cast him with an embrace that measured the fullest warmth a mother

can bestow.

The spirit of Daniel; of angel from birth; the ways of many travels; of circles comeround; the Love immersed; the hosts of Heaven do rejoice; this be Gods plan indirect; to

see the wisdom He birthed; to field the matters of the heart; the soul endures to gift; a

mothers love lay in wait as long as earth. She does hold true; her heart does speak content;

Daniel is reborn to her anew. This would be Gods promise to all His children.

Daniel was led away by Dressel toward their humble barn and livestock center. A

large candle covered with encircled glass guided their way after the evening rose into

darkness; Dressel taking him to the thatch-roof, tiny barn which housed what few animals

they possessed.

There was one empty stall where he could find uninterrupted sleep. Early spring had

yet to come; the previous winter worn, but still had its bite. But this was the only room the

Mulligans owned, and this would have to do. The stars above sparkled through to give

Daniel some sense he was home; yet now the term homemeant the place of two realms,

and he followed Dressel where she led. The barn held a bit of draft, and so Dressel carried

about her additional blankets to keep Daniel warm the whole night through. They settled

within; Daniel taking particular interest in the lantern; poking at the glass in an attempt to

touch the light.

Interesting Daniel replied; still trying to intervene on the torchs interior.

You have such a thing in your country? She spun around and looked amused atDaniels insistence to figure out how such a contraption worked.

A light source contained, Daniel appeared to pay her no mind, constant; still

burns, but not to be put outYou must come from a rugged land She continued to place out the blankets for

him to sleep by. They settled close as she began to converse and question Daniel further.

Why didnt you defend yourself against Drury? Dressel asked; looking at his starewith a sort of pardon in her voice, You could have defeated him, but you didnt try; not

even an attempt to fend for yourself

I am to defend the defenselessDaniel softly remarked, This is what I am called

to do The Father requests that my efforts are confined to such as this

But why so? She wondered further, You have a right to defend yourself

To what end?

For protectionBut our Father protects, Daniel looked at her oddly, as Faith is tested and

Would you have come to my aid, Daniel looked nearly through her, if you first,

did believe that I was able to defend for myself? That I, in this moment, you considered

defenseless and not able to protect myself and we to never meet

Dressel began to look closely into his expression; to see there were no wounds,

though she touched his face softly about and wondered with her eyes and gaze how hecould have averted such an onslaught without any noticeable abrasions.

Tell me of your brother Daniel softly inquired; grabbing on her hands to hold

them from his face, The brother you lost so long ago

This brought Dressel to some level of uneasiness and caused her to divert her look

away; to fiddle with the blankets she had laid down for Daniel to sleep by.

I know and remember little of this, Dressel began, I was so young when all this

occurred It was so sudden and unexpected Mother and father mourned many months

for Daniel It was a difficult time for our family; it affected mother most She never

seemed to really recover completely I imagine that Daniels death may be indirectly

responsible for her sickness I cant say however; the days dragged on for nearly an entire

growing season I was so young; Christopher and I; we were so very young

Daniel lived only briefly Daniel was conscious, but delicate regarding such

matters.

Still born, Dressel ruffled about the blankets further; though they needed no

additional addressing, He came early; no evident trouble during mothers pregnancy

Father felt much pressure from Elfdman to yield greater produce The season was hard

from the previous year And with mothers pregnancy, she could do little to help

Christopher and I were so young; unable to work the fields much So father was left tohimself much of the day We did as much as we could But the season was so difficult;

the weather colder than normal; much rain; little prime, sun-filled days

And Danielwhat was he like?I never even saw his eyes Dressel looked deeply into Daniel, though he shied

away so that she would not detect, I dont remember much to his face, even today A

In time Dressel rose from her sit and began her exit from the barn; taking so

about the torch and looking back at Daniel as he sat individual on those blankets she

provided, Breakfast is at dawn; well work the fields after this

The light she held disappeared with her into the night; the darkness stilled. A foreign

sensation which prevailed and caused Daniel to sit, idle, unmoved, and filled by thoughtthrough much of this dark and deep abyss. There was less to stir where the silence held

firm rapture in that night. Daniel felt this time to be of profound loneliness which

consumed him where he sat; unprovoked; the vacuum calm and absent; the worlds light

gone out and nothing left to take its place; the feeling in absence of God, which was never

his to know before.

The cold, emptied-out settlement; of a place and time unfamiliar; a world which

held glimpses of the Father, but others vacant and barren to know Him and the salvation He

will provide. Somewhere in this midst Daniel felt the intermingling of those two worlds.An unsettled state of sorts; a place of prayer; of calling to God for direction; of protection;

of where evil can slide through some crack and present him with an affliction he was not

prepared to encounter.

Jesus warned of temptations as He so experienced when on earth He traveled

millenniums before; of no less to the servant as to the master the same. Stay close dear

Father Daniel will be tested to all ends
