performed when required at the optimal time in the most costeffective and efficient port of call within the itinerary. Finally, superintendents and vessel operators can focus on what theydo best: the critical elements of vessel operations. The Subsea Solutions Alliance continues to remain thepremier underwater equipment repair company. This monthseemed to be the month of the "Rudder" as the expert diver /technicians of the Subsea Solutions Alliance were involved inmany rudder repairs around the world. From the replacement oflink pins in high-lift rudders to class approved underwater wetwelding to install bracket plates or renewal of welds in affectedareas, multiple rudder repairs were performed in variouslocations throughout the world. Combining our expertise withOriginal Equipment Manufacturer personnel, the SubseaSolutions Alliance provided the in-water support so that criticalinternal seal and bushing repairs could be performed by theOriginal Equipment Manufacturer without extracting the rudderor relocating the vessel to a location with a dry dock. In-waterdoes not mean out of luck when it comes to rudders. It justinvolves the expertise of the Subsea Solutions Alliance. In this month's edition of the Chronicles we will feature someinteresting repairs performed around the world as well asintroduce you to one of my colleagues who makes all of thispossible. Fast response and quality service demonstrates thatthe impossible is POSSIBLE when the Subsea SolutionsAlliance is called to the scene. Making all of these interestingrepairs successful requires fortitude, aptitude and drive. Mycolleagues and I remain focused on serving your needs and Ilook forward to introducing you to them more closely in this andthe future Chronicles to come. Time to Play in the mud!- Hydro-blasting in utility shafts far below the surface

The Subsea Solutions Alliance remains available to theship repair markets, marine construction and land basedconstruction markets on a global basis. Considering theunique capabilities and specialized skills that the membercompanies of the Subsea Solutions Alliance havedeveloped over the years, thought to be impossiblesolutions are developed for even the land basedconstruction industry. As part of a new construction project in the center of town, far from the sea in the Southwestern USA, a constructioncompany contracted the Subsea Solutions Alliance officein Long Beach California to provide diving support during

the new construction of vaults for municipal water piping. This urban setting away from thecoastline and sea water was a "new twist" on an old problem for the Subsea Solutions Alliance. In order to fabricate these vaults for the piping systems below the surface, very hard mud and rockneeded to be removed underwater. Considering that the affected area was over 70 feet (21 meters)below the surface, the highly skilled diver / technicians had to employ advanced air divingtechniques with a Nitrox air diving system in order to maintain a suitable amount of time below thesurface to extract the materials. With visibility at ZERO at all times, skilled diver / techniciansutilized a purpose built hydro-blasting tool to extract the rock and hard mud materials safely andefficiently from the affected area. Once the affected areas were prepared, proper forms wereinstalled and the concrete vaults were poured.

To perform a safe and effective hydro-blasting process, theengineering department of the Subsea Solutions Alliancedeveloped a specialized blasting tip to safely and efficientlyblast water at 10,000 psi (690 Bar) being propelled by a325 Horsepower diesel driven blasting pump to remove theheavy mud and rock. This specialized tool saved thegeneral contractor valuable time and money anddemonstrated again that thinking "in the water" sometimesturns challenging problems into underwater solutions. Water is found everywhere but sometimes NOT to drink. The Subsea Solutions Alliance develops solutions for alltypes of waterborne problems. From ships to shore, themember companies of the Subsea Solutions Alliance areyour underwater resource for advanced underwaterservice.

Offshore Installations- When a Retractable Thruster won't Retract!

While visiting clients in Singapore, a prominent Singaporeanshipyard called the Subsea Solutions Alliance to discuss anemergency issue they had with a newly built pipe-laying vesselthat was soon to be delivered. During trials of a retractableazimuthing thruster, the unit would NOT retract and appeared tobe seized. Various methods of repair were evaluated and trieduntil it was determined that the unit could not be drawn backinto the vessel and was seized in position. Various divingcontractors were called to an emergency meeting at theshipyard to brainstorm methods of repair. As experts in underwater azimuthing thruster repair, with

experience in underwater re-alignment of azimuthing thrusters, the Subsea Solutions Alliancewas able to diagnose the problem and develop an alternativerepair solution quickly. As the shipyard and vessel's owner didnot want to use an exothermic cutting or gouging system andthe shipyard was concerned about using a carbon arc gougingsystem in the affected area the only alternatives available wereto grind or cut the 70-mm thick stay plate. The affected platerequired two cuts with an overall cut length of over 2 meters. To add to the complication of this job, the material of the stayplate was hardened machine grade steel and had a continuous

70 mm thickness along its entire length. Grinding this stay plate underwater would be extremely time consuming and expensive to perform. As the stay plate material was very hard and was very thick, it would have taken a considerableamount of shifts (maybe 4 to 5 times the number of shifts) when compared to executing the requiredcuts with the specialized equipment from the Subsea Solutions Alliance. The member companies

of the Subsea Solutions Alliance have developed a specialized cutting saw specifically designedto cut steel plate up to 200 mm thick! This specialized saw is used in underwater metal cutting andpropeller sectional reduction applications. When the esteemed shipyard heard of this alternative allfocus turned to how FAST the member companies of the Subsea Solutions Alliance couldmobilize on site. During the afternoon meeting a repair procedure and repair time line was developed with theSubsea Solutions Alliance representative on site supported by the European office of the SSA,the shipyard, owner and surveyors. While personnel in the North American office's of the SubseaSolutions Alliance slept they were unaware that within hours of their arrival to the office they wouldbe leaving to the Far East. This time line determined how long it would take to install the cuttingsaw and then execute the required cuts to the Stay plate. The time line estimated that it would taketwo- 12 hour shifts to execute the necessary cuts to the stay plate. A local support vessel and teamwas mobilized and within 3 hours of receiving the official order from the shipyard, personnel andspecialized equipment was mobilized from Subsea Solutions Alliance's office in Vancouver,Canada and was enroute to Singapore. During the next two twelve hour shifts the stay plates were cut and the thruster was allowed to freely"align" itself in the retraction column. Once this occurred, the unit was able to retract back into thevessel for dry-docking and final repair by the shipyard. Working around the clock, utilizing technical expertise from a global network of underwaterspecialists and mobilizing a work force with equipment capable of being carried on conventionalpassenger aircraft makes the member companies of the Subsea Solutions Alliance true problemsolvers. Our services are not only limited to ship owners and operators, but can complimentshipyard activities as well. Let's explore what we can do for you to optimize your ship repair andSHIP BUILDING activities.

Making the Impossible- POSSIBLE- Welcome to My world!Brook Reinking- Operations Manager at Miami Diver Inc.

Operations within the Subsea Solutions Allianceremains the most critical and demanding aspect of thejob. How do you make a repair successful when it'snever been done before and it must be performed inremote locations around the world with LITTLE TO NOtime to plan? Welcome to the world of Operations withinthe Subsea Solutions Alliance and welcome to Brook'sworld. Brook Reinking is a veteran within the Miami Diver Inc.organization in Miami Florida. Brook found his callingwithin the commercial diving world at Miami Diver inApril 1999. Once he hit the warm, clear waters of theCaribbean he has never looked back. A native ofOmaha, Nebraska, one can only ask, how does a youngman from a landlocked state become a commercial diverworking on sea going vessels? The story goes as

follows according to Brook: "I was born and raised in Omaha Nebraska the middle son wedged between an older and youngersister. After moving around to various states in the Mid-west I realized it was time to move out onmy own so I packed my gear and headed to South Florida. That is when I got hooked on diving. After advancing to the highest certifications in the recreational diving circuit I realized thatcommercial diving was my calling. So, I packed up my Ford Ranger, put on the "camper top" andheaded to the Pacific Northwest for dive school in Seattle Washington. Yes, a corner-to-corner roadtrip across the USA is an adventure to say the least! Seven months later, after completing diveschool, I packed up the trusted Ranger yet again and ventured back to South Florida to enter intothe world of Miami Diver Inc. and the Subsea Solutions Alliance. My introduction into commercial diving began with the ceremonial initiation of 'pull-ups'. CaptainTom (the original owner and founder of Miami Diver Inc.) required all new recruits to his company todo MORE pull-ups than him as part of the job interview. Never shying away from a challenge, Igave it my all and well, the rest is history." As with all management and operations personnel within the Subsea Solutions Alliance, Brookhas worked at all levels of the organization. He started the company as an entry diver and slowlygained momentum to become a supervisor. Continuing to grow within the organization, Brookbecame a lead dive supervisor by becoming certified in many critical repairs by major OriginalEquipment Manufacturers. Brook maintains certifications from Blohm and Voss and Wartsila forunderwater Lip seal replacement, is certified by Wartsila in the replacement of Face Seals, maintains certification in propeller repair including cropping and straightening from Subsea PropellerInc. and has been trained by Rolls Royce and Fincantieri in thruster repair and replacement. In2007 as Miami Diver Inc. and the Subsea Solutions Alliance became busier and busier withcomplex underwater equipment repairs, Brook moved from the senior dive supervisor / Projectmanager position into the Manager of Operations. "My colleagues at the time I started at Miami Diver never thought I would make it. How's this skinnylittle "landlubber" going to make it here? But I truly enjoy the work and really enjoy the team I workwith. The Fast pace, with no limitations problem solving type atmosphere in a multi cultural globalindustry drives me to deliver." As the Manager of Operations, Brook is responsible to organize the jobs (establish properpersonnel, equipment and technical documentation for the Project Manager as well as organize andmanage the logistics of getting personnel and equipment to the affected vessel), support thecustomer as well as the on site project manager from the Subsea Solutions Alliance during the joband then follow up with the client upon the conclusion of the work. Brook remains the first lineTechnical expert, customer relationship manager, management coach for our project managers onsite and job coordinator. Juggling the technical requirements of the job, ship's schedule, equipmentplanning, personnel planning, freight forwarding, airline schedules and personnel managementrequires organization, technical expertise and the will to serve. Brook maintains it all. Brook enjoy's life in South Florida as it offers him a perfect opportunity to do what he loves. Scubadiving, spear fishing, target shooting (both rifle and pistol), adventure racing, running and riding hisbicycles (both Mountain and Road bike) keep Brook "FIT TAN AND HAPPY." That is the SouthFlorida way and that's why Brook Reinking remains a premier south Florida man!
