Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 27, 2020 “If there is any encouragement in Christ, and solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory, rather humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for ones own interest but for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus.” In almost every letter of Saint Paul, we find a series of teachings, like a litany to instruct his communities. Colossians, Corinthians offer us his clear insights. In Philippians today we find great virtues equal encouragement, solace, compassion and mercy. When these are present ones experiences joy. Notice these are directed outward, quite distinct from selfishness and self satisfaction. Often people state ‘you have an attitude’ and it is considered in a negative way. Paul teaches us to have a ‘Christ attitude’, one which encompasses the litany he offers us. Paul teaches, Christ models, we follow.

Ministries
Food for the Hungry: In our seventh month of the pandemic, food insecurity in our local community is very prevalent. As individuals and families struggle to make ends meet, the Church of St. Timothy is committed to helping “Feed the Hungry.” Some ways you can help are:
Bringing Donations to our church: shop for non-perishable food items (see suggested list of items below) and drop off in the vestibule “Feed the Hungry” baskets.
Host A Food Drive - consider hosting a neighborhood food drive and bring the items to our church or deliver to the West Hartford Food Panty. These drives are very successful, a 2-week duration seems to be a good timeframe to run such food drives.
Suggested Items to bring/collect are: Food: canned beans, canned chicken/spam, pasta. spaghetti sauce, rice, nuts, applesauce, canned fish, cooking oil, granola bars, instant mashed potatoes, peanut butter, soup, cereal and Nonfood items: detergent, soap products
Make Sandwiches: St Timothy and St Thomas Parishes are working together on the 3rd Tuesday of every month to provide sandwiches to shelters in Hartford. Prepared sandwiches are brought to St Timothy’s church between 9 AM and 12 Noon and placed in coolers in the church vestibule. Sandwiches are “very simple” consisting of meat, cheese and bread, with no condiments. We invite you all to participate next month on Tuesday, October 20th. If you have questions or need information, please contact Barbara Carpenter at [email protected].
Shelters’ Needs: People are people and basic needs are the same: toothpaste soap, deodorant, socks, underwear (basics are basics) are always a need in the shelters. If you have some basics to share, we will gladly deliver them to the shelters.
COMING: SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY WINTER WEAR FOR KIDS
DRIVE SEPT & OCT
This weekend SJM will be collecting gently used winter coats, hats, mittens, scarves & boots at the church. A member of the committee will be outside the front doors of the church to collect the items on September 26th from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm and September 27th from 10:00 am to 11:00pm. Due to COVID-19’s financial impact, the need is even greater this year. To keep people safe, the logistics of this drive have changed. We will not collect monetary donations at the church door, but you can use the monthly SJM donation envelope and place it in the church collection boxes, or donate online if you have a St Timothy’s online account (selecting the new gift option for the Social Justice Ministry Drives) or mailing a check to the rectory ( made out to the Church of St Timothy with SJM Winter Wear in the memo portion). Donations will purchase winter coats through local businesses. The coat sizes that are needed are extra-small to extra-large (grades pre-k through 8th). Thank you for considering this request and for all your support in the past. If you have questions, contact Debbie LaPierre at [email protected]
