From the desk of our Pastoral Associate November 9 & 10, 2013 32nd Sunday in OTC As we approach the end of the liturgical year, (Feast of Christ the King, Nov. 24th this year) the liturgy invites us to look to the parousia, or Christ’s second coming and our belief in the resurrection of the dead. Both the Apostle and Nicene Creeds proclaim belief that the dead will rise on the last day to life everlasting. “God does not abandon us to the tomb and darkness but ensures the resurrection of the dead. The last word in the story of our life is not uttered by the figure of death but by the triumphant Christ who has risen and who offers us new and eternal life (CCC 988-89).” Belief in the resurrection of the body did not develop over the Christian centuries. Rather, it has been integral to the proclamation of our faith from the beginning (CCC 991). Without an informed understanding of the resurrection, revealed in Jesus’ rising from the tomb, the first apostles would never have had the courage to witness to the faith. Indeed, what faith would they have witnessed to without the resurrection of Jesus and the firm assurance in the Lord that we too will share in the new life of the One who promises us “I am the resurrection and the life?” (John 11:25). Even prior to the new covenant established in Christ, God’s faithful people, Israel, held some notion of the promise of risen life. While the Sadducees denied resurrected life, the Pharisees and many others in Jesus’ day believed that God would raise them from death. The Catholic Church believes and prays, “In Christ the world is saved, we are reborn, and the dead rise again to life. The resurrection to new life offered to believers is accomplished in Jesus, the Crucified, Risen One. The transformation that occurs, our corruptible bodies changing into glorified bodies, takes place in and through the One who saves us by his own passion, death and resurrection (CCC999). The reverence with which Catholics honor the mortal remains of those who have died indicates in a powerful way the hope we have of resurrection. Catholic funerals include many gestures to bless and honor the body. Whether the bodies of the deceased are buried or entombed, or cremated and placed in the earth or in a burial niche, our respectful treatment of them gives expression to our belief that these “temples of the Holy Spirit” await the resurrection of the dead. Early Christians marked graves with the initials RIP (Latin for “rest in peace”) denoting their belief in the resurrection of the body. The grave was a place of resting or sleeping in peace until the time when Christ would call forth those who had died believing in him. *************************************************************** Pastoral Care: If you or someone you know would like to receive Holy Communion at home or in a nursing home please call Pat Piano, 860-232-8594.

Scripture Study: Beginning on Tuesday, November 12 at Noon in the rectory we will resume our scripture study. This season we will be using an ancient practice of sacred reading called Lectio Divina, that is Sacred Reading. This practice of prayer and scripture reading is intended to help us enter deeply into the presence of God and to increase our knowledge of God’s Word. Sometime called listening with the “ear” of the heart, this method enables us to experience the living Christ, always in our midst. When we reconnect with the Lord by listening to him, our lives take on new power and meaning. Please join us for this wonderful practice. No prior experience is necessary. For more information, or to register, call Pat Piano at the rectory, 860-232-8594 ***************************************************************** Baptism Preparation: All those having first babies baptized are asked to attend an informational class. Next class is Monday, December 9 at 6:00 P.M. in St. Timothy Middle School. Please call Pat Piano at the rectory for more information: 860-232-8594, or [email protected] ************************************************************

St Timothy’s Outreach Committee St Timothy’s parish continues to reach out weekly to our Neighbors in Need: “Travel Size Toiletries Collection” providing toiletries to shelters in Hartford; and “One Can A Week” providing food and personal hygiene items to the Catholic Worker House. Thanks for reaching out a helping hand! Feed The Hungry The Outreach Committee would like to remind everyone that the Thanksgiving bags for St Peter’s Church that were handed out at all of the Masses on November 2 & 3, 2013 should be returned on November 9 & 10, 2013 at any of the Masses. We will delivering the bags to St Peter’s church after the 10:30am Mass on November 10, 2013. Please help us in feeding the poor. I was at St Peter’s Church on November 3, 2013 after the 12pm Mass when Father Dairo E. Diaz announced to the parish that anyone who needed food for Thanksgiving could sign up at the church, and they would receive Thanksgiving bags ***************************************************************** Eucharist for Older Children: There are many reasons why families are not able to participate in a preparation process for the reception of First Eucharist at the second grade level, which is when children at St. Timothy Parish are prepared. If you have an older child, grade three and beyond, who has not been prepared for this Sacrament of Initiation, please call Pat Piano at the rectory or Stephanie Barnes, our Pre-K through Grade 5 Director of Faith Formation. Contact information on front of bulletin. *************************************************************** Parish members with special needs: Are you or someone you know in need of special services during our worship? Are you unable to go to communion in the procession? Are you wheat intolerant and therefore unable to take the host? Are you Deaf? In a wheel chair? Just let us know your need and we are sure we can be of help. Stop by the sacristy on the weekend or call Pat Piano, 860-232-8594

Becoming a Catholic: Are you getting married this year but do not share the faith of your intended? Have you just had a baby but because you do not have a common faith with your partner you are in a quandary about having the baby baptized? Are you in a marriage of multiple faiths? For some people the above issues are not a problem. But if you would like to know how to bring a faith unity to your marriage/family life by becoming a Catholic, please call Pat Piano at the rectory: 860-232-8594. ******************************************************************* Young Family Ministry Playgroup: St. Timothy’s Young Family Ministry will be hosting a playgroup on this weekend on Sunday, November 10, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in O'Connell Hall. Drop in before or after Mass for toys, conversation, and a brief spiritual program. This is a great opportunity for families with young children to meet one another. ********************************************************** Northwest Catholic High School will administer its Entrance Exam on November 16th and December 7th at 8 a.m. For more information or to apply/register for the exam, go to northwestcatholic.org/admissions or contact Andrew Selig at [email protected]. ****************************************************************** Bake Sale for Uganda: Tom and Alicia Moran, two young members of St. Timothy’s will be holding a bake sale in O’Connell Hall after all Masses next weekend, November 16 and 17. Tom is in 8th grade at STMS, and Alicia is a sophomore at NWCHS. Having travelled to Uganda this summer, they are currently raising funds to build a well at St. Bernadette School in Nkozi, Uganda. Please plan to stop in to make a purchase or to make a donation and support this worthy cause. **************************************************************** Holiday Craft Festival & Marketplace to Benefit Medical Aid to Haiti (MATH) The 6th annual Holiday Craft Festival and Marketplace to benefit Medical Aid to Haiti (MATH) opens Saturday, November 16, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and Sunday, November 17, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford, CT.
