THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
NOVEMBER 11, 2018 The readings this Sunday seem to focus on generosity. The prophet Elijah asks an impoverished widow, who has almost nothing, to be generous. And she is. The letter to the Hebrews states that Jesus’ offering of himself is an act of giving so substantial that it does not have to be repeated. In the Gospel a widow gives of her substance, in contrast to the rich who give a lot from their abundance but who have a lot more to give. The first reading hints that these scriptures are not only about giving. They are also about fear. Elijah tells the widow, “Do not be afraid” to give your all. The depth of generosity that God asks of us is only possible if we let go of our fear.
GIVE EVERYTHING In First Kings, Elijah meets a widow and immediately makes a request that she promptly fulfills; then he makes another that she resists. His response is not to chastise her lack of charity but instead he says, as Jesus will say repeatedly say in the Gospels, “Do not be afraid.” He recognizes that it is not lack of charity that prevents her from giving him a little food, it is fear, fear that she will not have enough for her son and herself given their dire straits. Elijah looks beyond the obvious. He asks something of her and then gives back to her, from God’s abundance, something even greater. The same is true in Hebrews. Christ offers himself, not as the priest does with a life not his own, but as the genuine Son of God. Again in the Gospel, the substantive generosity of the impoverished widow is contrasted with the apparent generosity of the wealthy. The wealthy are found lacking.
Today’s Readings: 1 Kgs 17:10–16; Ps 146:7, 8–9, 9–10; Heb 9:24–28; Mk 12:38–44 [41–44](Worship Pgs. 1203)

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Last Saturday, we celebrated Confirmation with Bishop Dominick Lagonegro. We had two Confirmations: one at 10:00AM and one at 2:00PM. Both were very beautiful. Over the years, many made this possible: staff & volunteer teachers in the PREP Program; teachers and staff St. Anthony’s School; and, on the day of, many
volunteers from our Liturgical Ministries – the Choir, the Ushers and our men who maintain our beautiful buildings and grounds. We thank you all!
We thank the parents and guardians of our young men and women who were confirmed for the gift of their sons and daughters to our Church and to our Parish Family!
We pray for them that they listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit as they continue their journeys with the Lord!
With Prayer, & Gratitude, Fr. Jerry

The next meeting is November 20th. It will be held at International Headquarters, 9 Scott Drive, New City, NY 10956. Services are free of charge. These meetings are held every Monday at 9 Scott Drive, New City. For further information please contact Ann Carucci at 634-6706.
THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28).
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS So often at this time of year we remember our departed relatives and friends. A lovely way to do this is to remember them with Christmas Flowers for our altars. If you would like to do this, please drop your Christmas Flower envelope in the collection basket or pick up an envelope in the church and return it to the rectory. We will again print the names of those in whose memory the flowers were donated.
DUE TO EARLY HOLIDAY DEADLINES, ALL FLOWER REMEMBRANCE ENVELOPES MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN MONDAY, DECEMBER 10th.
**PLEASE NOTE: WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT ANY ENVELOPES RECEIVED AFTER DECEMBER 10th, WILL HAVE THE NAME PRINTED IN THE BULLETIN ** Please be sure to PRINT the names on the envelopes to assure the correct spelling.
Note: In addition this year, due to the amount of pages that have to go in the bulletin, we are asking you to group people with the same last name and not list them individually. Thank you!
