From 'A Letter from Birmingham Jail'

There is a letter that from time to time draws my attention. It was written from one preacher to others. Like many of Paul's epistles, it was written from inside a jail, a Birmingham jail. It was not written just any old time of year but on Easter weekend, 1963, a turbulent time when peace-makers were few, peace-breakers many, and when most of our churches sat in the guilty silence of peace-fakery, hoping it would all go away. The flaws of that letter writer, we will leave to the historians, but his pen that day was pure prophecy; the candle of his intellect and rhetoric was lit by the Holy Spirit. I print the last two paragraphs of that letter in the hope that one day we will see his words fulfilled, not just in legal matters but in the merciful, pure, and peacemaking hearts of people who will join the biblical prophets in their quest for righteousness. Listen to the content and the poetry. : "One day the South will recognize its real heroes. They will be the James Merediths, with the noble sense of purpose that enables them to face jeering and hostile mobs, and with the agonizing loneliness that characterizes the life of the pioneer. They will be old, oppressed, battered Negro women, symbolized in a seventy-two-year-old woman in Montgomery, Alabama, who rose up with a sense of dignity and with her people decided not to ride segregated buses, and who responded with ungrammatical profundity to one who inquired about her weariness: "My feets is tired, but my soul is at rest." They will be the young high school and college students, the young ministers of the gospel and a host of their elders, courageously and nonviolently sitting in at lunch counters and willingly going to jail for conscience' sake. One day the South will know that when these disinherited children of God sat down at lunch counters, they were in reality standing up for what is best in the American dream and for the most sacred values in our Judeo-Christian heritage, thereby bringing our nation back to those great wells of democracy which were dug deep by the founding fathers in their formulation of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.... I hope this letter finds you strong in the faith. I also hope that circumstances will soon make it possible for me to meet each of you, not as an integrationist or a civil rights leader but as a fellow clergyman and a Christian brother. Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-drenched communities, and in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty. Yours for the cause of Peace and Brotherhood, Martin Luther King, Jr." . If the reading raises your anxiety a bit, and if old prejudices are uncovered, it tells me we have some work yet to do in the first column of our relationship with God. Five years later, King would live into the martyrdom that the eighth beatitude predicts as the place to which companionship with Jesus may lead, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Where are you called to speak up? Where are you called to stand out? Where are you called to defend the causes of God in our world ?

This year’s Catholic Schools Week is complete. Sunday’s Mass celebra-tion was fantastic! The students all did a great job with their Mass parts and singing. The collection for the school brought in $2,850.14. Thank you for your generosity. In addition, thank you to school board members Scott Burns, Ruth Putnam, Chris Hurley and Patty LeBrun for serving coffee and rolls after Mass. Thank you to everyone who helped and/or brought desserts making this year’s Soup and Pie Supper/Talent Show a success. A special thank you to Marie Johnson and Shelly Spartz for giving of your time and talents for this year’s talent show. Thank you to Joel Krekelberg for making a double batch of his famous chicken and wild rice soup, to the alumni moms for making the broccoli cheese soup, to Mrs. Johnson for the chili, and to Frank and Laura Magana for the Green Chili Pueblo Stew. Also, thank you to Fareway for donating the soup crackers! We are happy to announce that Fareway grocery store has raised their SCRIP earning amount from 3% to 5%. Please be reminded that SCRIP is available to all families as a quick and easy way to reduce tuition costs. The goal for this year’s Catholic United Financial School Raffle is $15,000 and so far, $2695 has been raised. This year’s top prize is a new 2020 Buick Encore or $20,000 cash. Tickets are $5.00 each. Look for students selling tickets after Mass or stop by the school office!

Physician-Assisted Suicide Myth: There are some ways of liv-ing where the person would be better off dead. If they want that, we should facilitate that. Truth: This is a quiet way of insulting and threatening millions of people living with disabilities. Every national disability rights organization in the USA (15 of them) has come out against physician-assisted suicide legislation. Catholic Compassion: If someone says they would be better off dead, tell them that is not true, their lives have meaning, and offer them help finding a counselor. If the person is living with disabilities, include and welcome them. If they are bound to bed and cannot communicate, bring community to them. Many people’s lives are deeply enriched by relation-ships with friends and family with disabilities. All human be-ings are beloved in the eyes of God, and we are called to be friends to each other.
