What is the Circulatory System? From the minute that you are born to the minute you die your heart is constantly

pumping blood around your body. The Cardiovascular or Circulatory System is made up of the blood, heart, blood

vessel sand arteries. The Circulatory System keeps your blood flowing through your body and makes sure that your heart is beating.

What Systems are Connected to the Circulatory System?

• The Respiratory system is connected to the Circulatory system. The heart pumps the blood around the body. Once it reaches the lungs there is no oxygen left. There is only carbon dioxide left. When the blood passes the lungs, carbon dioxide gets removed and replaced with fresh oxygen.

The Stages of the System

1 The system starts off with healthy blood leaving the heart, working its way down to the aorta.

2 The blood is full of oxygen. The blood travels all around the body, giving it a boost of energy.

3 Once it has finished its journey, it goes through a series of veins. 4 They lead back to the heart and they make sure that it is healthy

and refreshed. When the blood reaches the lungs, carbon dioxide is removed from the blood and is replaced with fresh oxygen.

The Blood Cells

• Blood is made up of white blood cells and red blood cells. The red blood cells give blood its colour and carry the oxygen. The white blood cells fight bacteria. Every 5000 red blood cells there is 8 white blood cells.

What are the disorders of the system?

There are many disorders of the system. The few disorders that are most important

include Hypertension, Cardiomyopathy and Coronary Artery Disease. We will tell a little bit about them in the following slides.

Page 8: The circulatory system

Hypertension

• Hypertension is a common disorder of the system. It is known by high blood pressure. The cause of this disorder is by blood pressure being higher than the standard blood line. It increases the risk of heart attacks and similar diseases.

Page 9: The circulatory system

Cardiomyopathy

• Cardiomyopathy is caused by weakening of the heart and muscles. The early stages of this disease begin by the lower part of the heart being infected. If it is untreated, it can spread to other parts of the heart. In extreme cases, it can lead to congestive heart failure or even death.

Coronary Artery Disease

• Coronary Artery Disease is by far the most common disease of the Circulatory System. It is caused by accumulation of plaque infecting the arterial walls. It is a meager cause deaths around the world.
