The Civil Rights Movement: An Analysis of Important TextsTIMOTHY RO
Uncle Tom’s CabinUncle Tom’s Cabin was mainly an anti-slavery piece that protested the evils of slavery. However,
in the story itself, the character of Uncle Tom is the first example of peaceful protest. When
being persecuted by a cruel slave owner, Uncle Tom responds to harsh actions with love, and
even manages to convert the two overseers that eventually beat him to death through the
forgiveness of their actions. Peaceful protest as a tactic was made popular by Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. who advocated the power and the strength to love.
