I love thinking up harmless, funny jokes to tease my brother, Chitter, on April Fool's Day. To read the first part of this “tricky” letter about April Fool's Day, hold it up to a mirror!

Surely You Jest! April Fool’s Day is a time of fun. People like to play harmless jokes and pranks. One favorite trick is to point out something that is not really there! April Fool’s Day used to be called All Fool’s Day. It is thought to have started in France. A long time ago, March 21st was the date of the New Year. A little over a week of parties and fun followed. On the last day of the festivities, April 1st, formal visits were paid and gifts exchanged.

In the 16th century, the Gregorian calendar was introduced. March 21st was no longer New Year’s Day and April 1st was no longer the “right day” to visit and give gifts. News traveled slowly in those times, so many people kept April 1st as the last big day of the holiday season. Many others refused to change their ways. People who clung to the old ways were called April Fools. Today, on April 1st, you might hear people call out, “Poisson d’Avril!” They have fooled someone and are calling him or her an April fish. That person took the “bait” and was easily “caught.” April Fool’s Day is a time to share some laughter with friends and family.

LOCAL HISTORIANS Amateur Eastern Montana historian is looking for information on an individual who ranched in Eastern Montana but also had a ranch in your area of Texas. I have made three trips to Texas but have only found a limited amount of information. I would appreciate any informa-tion someone from your area might be able to provide. Following is all of the information I have on this individual, whose name was Pierre Wibaux; In 1903 Mr. Wibaux stated he owned 200,000 acres in Texas. In the 1901 tax rolls for Hall County, Texas, a "P. Wibaux" was assessed for 3 horses and 145 head of cattle but no land. The 1902 and 1903 reports of the Cattle Rais-ers Association of Texas show Pierre Wibaux to be a member and to ranch in Annstrong, Donley and Cottle Counties in Texas, with Jack Serruys as manager. I have not been able to fi nd any land or other records on Mr. Wibaux.
