The Clarendon Grange was very active in the early

1900’s. The first officers were:

Charles W. Glidden, Master, Al-

va Salisbury, Overseer,

Lucy Barber, Lecturer and

Fred Sargent, Steward. All

of these names should be

familiar as these families

are still located in the area

today. The Grange is the

oldest general agricultural

organization in the coun-

try. Founded in 1867 to

better the conditions for

farmers and other rural

citizens. Unfortunately

the Grange in Clarendon

along with many others in the

county have discontinued their

charters and do not exist any-

more. Some of the old grange

buildings still exist today and are

used for other businesses and

perhaps a residence. The Clar-

endon Grange operated in the

Maccabee Hall on the second

floor of the old stone store and

in the old Holley High School.

The last place they met was in

the community building in Clarendon where our post office

now stands. The building fell into disrepair and was torn down.

Clarendon Historical Society invites you to join us on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM when Delia “Dee” Robinson will present “The Temperance Movement in Clarendon.” From the 1880’s into the early 20th century, Clarendon was the site of one of the most popular and best attended Temperance Meetings in New York State. Attendance at the meetings could reach twelve thousand people on a popular day. Many well-known temperance speakers appeared here. The meetings were held in a wooded area on Hul-berton Road. In addition to the subject of the need to refrain from using alcohol, other issues such as religion, politics, patriotism and social problems such as poverty were discussed. Entertainment and food was also provided. Dee Robinson was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She earned her Librarians degree at Clarion State College, now Clarion University. She is married and has 4 children and 6 grandchildren. She is a Reference Librarian at Hoag Library in Albion, has served as Historian for the Town of Gaines and for 32 years was Resource Center Director at the Cobblestone Society Resource Center (the society's library). She is also a past presi-dent of the Association of Public Historians of New York State. The program will take place at the Clarendon Historical Society which is located at 16426 Fourth Section Road, Holley, NY at the intersection of Route 31A and Church Street in Clarendon. The presenta-tion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

The Museum will be open from 5:00-7:00 PM on the days we have programming (the 3rd Wed of the month beginning in April and going through October.)

THIS MONTH’S RIDDLES:

1. What happened to the guy who sued over his missing luggage? 2. What kind of flowers grow in outer space? 3. Why didn’t the flower go to school on its bike? 4. What do you call a bunch of bees? 5. Who do firemen miss the most?

Not Just Say Hello

By James J. Metcalfe

Life can be so beautiful and it can be so sweet

If only we are interested in people whom we meet. If only we extend our thoughts beyond a mere hello And strive a bit unselfishly to help a friendship grow.

Just to linger there a while and be most gracious then And set a certain time and place where we shall meet again.

Hello is such a happy word and yet so very small That it can vanish swiftly from the moments we recall. So let us try to cultivate each person whom we meet

Our dearest friend may be the one we incidentally meet.

That’s it this time. You all have a great 4th of July and a great month.

Adios and God Bless.

Geary ‘Moose’ Shenck

Hello you all! Maybe by the time you read this summer will finally have arrived. Doctor: I’ve concluded that you’re incapable of de-scribing your feelings. Patient: I can’t say that I’m surprised. “How is your son the doctor getting on with his practice?” “Excellent. He has made enough money so he can occasionally tell a patient there is nothing wrong with him.” “What would I get,” inquired the man who had just insured his property against fire, “if this building should burn down tonight? “I would say about 10 years,” replied the insurance agent. Rod: I can tell if someone is lying just by looking at him. Joe: Really? Rod: Yep. I can tell if he’s standing too.” Profits, not prophets foretell the future. Too much of the world is run on the theory that you don’t need road manners if you are a five ton truck. It’s easy to pick out the best people. They’ll help you do it. The new computers do everything but think which we must admit makes them almost human. Patent medicine ads are so attractive that it makes a man who has his health feel as though he were missing something. Punctuality is the art of guessing how late the other fellow is going to be. Some answers from students: In 1865 the pilgrims crossed the ocean and this was known as progress. A monastery is a place of monsters. False doctrine is when a doctor gives wrong stuff to a man. The man whose con-science never troubles him must have it pretty well trained. A good many car drivers don’t need seat belts as much as they need strait jackets.

One guest to another at a Washington, DC party, “You know what I call most Washington cocktail parties? Capitol Punish-ment!” I read this one time two weeks in August. Little drops of water, little grains of sand make the summer cottage more than I can stand. Little swarming insects, little holes in screens, little ice delivery, mostly cans of beans. Little children shrieking, little sleep for me. Is it merely August or eternity? Would I like a chance of winning a million dollars? Does a one legged duck swim in circles? What speed is my computer? It depends on how hard I throw the darn thing out the window. It’s always darkest before the dawn so if you’re going to steal something from your neighbor, that’s the time to do it. That’s supposed to be a drawing of Grandma is it? Well at least we’ll know not to waste money buying you crayons in the future. Small boy to teacher: I can’t get that report card back. You gave me an A in something and they are still mailing it to relatives. Nothing at-tracts the mustard from wieners as quickly as slacks just back from the cleaners. Joe Louis, when asked who hit him hardest during his boxing career replied, “The collector of Internal Rev-enue.”

Customer to headwaiter: Just for a point of information did the waiter who took my order leave any family? Happiness is like jam, you can’t spread even a little without getting some of it on yourself. Help my words be gracious and tender today for tomorrow I may have to eat them. When someone slings mud at you, let it dry and it will fall off. George Jessel said, “The human brain is a wonderful thing. It starts working the moment you are born, and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.” Cough: Something you your-self can’t help but everybody else does on purpose to torment you. A man, R.B. Jones doesn’t have a first or middle name. Only the initials R.B. This was never a problem until he went to work for a government agency. The government is not accustomed to ini-tialed employees so R.B. had a lot of explaining to do. On the offi-cial forms for the payroll and personnel department, his name was carefully entered as R.(only) B.(only) Jones. Sure enough, when R.B. received his first paycheck it was made out to Ronly Bonly Jones.

BRENDA SWANGER ran for the Holley School Board in 2004 and has

served continuously till June 2019. In 2013 Brenda was elected School

Board President and each year she was nominated for the spot and has

served as President since. This was her last meeting, she chose not to run

for another 3 year term. She is pictured here with her family who surprised

her by being at this meeting. Brenda will continue to be a supportive resi-

dent and will be missed. She was not afraid to make the hard decisions and

expect better for our district. She really has put her heart and soul in to her

role as an active board member. If there was something to be done, she

rolled up her sleeves and got moving.

Thank you for your leadership and high expectations, you will be missed.

The elementary school student council did a presentation for the

school board on all of the activities they did during the school year.
