Volume 13, No. 31 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 25, 2017

Dear People of Saint Anne,

It has been quite the journey since early January when I preached at Mass regard-ing the dream of our future plans for the Legacy of Faith Campaign. I indicated then that like any home, our Faith Home here at Saint Anne is in need of major repairs, maintenance projects, a reallocation of space and a plan to retire the parish debt related to the construction of our beautiful church campus over twenty years ago.

We had an ambitious goal of raising $6,000,000.00 in pledges over the next five years. Your truly exceptional and generous response and commitment to this endeavor enabled our faith community to not only meet our goal, but helped us raise nearly $7,300,000.00 in pledges to date. Through your generosity in making early campaign donations as well as making payments through the green envelopes over the years, we achieved our first priority early in the campaign – retiring the nearly $600,000.00 in building debt from the last capital campaign 20 years ago. In 2017, we expect to realize savings of $30,000.00 from interest payments alone.

During the public phase of the campaign, I committed to keeping you all apprised of our progress with the various campus projects supported by Legacy of Faith Campaign as described in our campaign materials. This summer, we plan to complete a lengthy list of these projects!

● Replace the roof of our chapel

● Repair the baptismal font in the church

● Replace the parking lots throughout the Saint Anne campus

● Replace the carpet in the church, including the stairs up to the second level

● Repair the rose windows in the church

● Repair the front doors of the church

● Repair the stonework outside the chapel

In addition, this summer, we will be evaluating significant repairs and upgrades to the heating and air conditioning systems in the church and school buildings. We are well aware of the ongoing issues with the systems, particularly on days with extreme temperatures. Rather than address these issues on a case-by-case basis, we are conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the system with a goal of preventing problems in the future. In addition, we are evaluating a cost-effective shift to LED lighting in our buildings, which will lower our electric bills and potentially take advantage of rebate programs.

As you fulfill your pledges, I feel confident that we will be able to complete all the projects we envisioned in the plans for Legacy of Faith Campaign in a timely manner. I encourage you to consult the Legacy of Faith Campaign section of our parish website from time to time for further progress reports as well as answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) that we receive. See https://stannebarrington.org/legacyoffaith.

If you would like to make a pledge to the Legacy of Faith Campaign or have any other questions, please con-tact Andrea Wirt, Campaign Coordinator, at [email protected] or 312.218.5312.

Sincerely,

Father Bernie Pietrzak

Pastor

SUMMER MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE: Due to the great decrease in the number of parishioners who attend the 5:15 p.m. Sunday Liturgy during the summer months and our inability to recruit Ministers of Communion, Lectors and Cantors to minister at this liturgy, the Sunday 5:15 p.m. Liturgy will take a vacation from Sunday, July 2nd through Sunday, August 6th. It will begin again on Sunday, August 13th.

Worship—LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney

THE COMMUNION RITE

SILENCE If you have been reading my articles on the Eucharist, you have probably been wondering whether I’m ever going to shut up about it. You may wonder how I can go on so long on something that may seem obvious, even if it is a treasure and a mystery. But honestly, I have barely scratched the surface of what’s been written or imagined about Eucharist. I haven’t, for instance, gone much into the “bread from heaven” or “living bread” or “bread of life” that come out of John 6 or the imagery around the banquet of the kingdom or the wedding feast of the Lamb, the food of pilgrims, or the panis angelicus (bread of angels) that are sung about in songs and in scripture.

The thing is, that’s really what a mystery does. Mystery opens up the floodgates of the imagination and begins to inspire us to new ways of being, of seeing and of grateful response. That’s why we hum and whistle and moon around, lost in our thoughts and dreams, when we fall in love. We are suddenly face to face with a tremendous mystery of another person who, miracle of miracles, likes us or whom we can’t get out of our heads. The mystery of God really can be like that: pure Love, pure agápe, utterly unselfish delight coming from outside of us and shining right in our eyes, warming us with the pleasure of recognition and affection. But getting from Scripture, prayer and even song and the presence of others to that place of wonder doesn’t happen quickly or automatically for most of us. For most of it, it requires silence. It requires the time set aside simply for the appreciation and reflection on just what happened in us and for us, in this case, in the Eucharist.

The liturgy knows this. This is why, as we do after readings and after the homily when we do this at our very best, we have a period of silence after Communion, to let the experience sink in and to let things melt together a little bit. It is time to interiorize the experience of the church community, the meal, the story and our own lives and the intersection of them all. It’s not necessarily even an “active” silence; we are not expected to fill it up with thoughts or even prayers. It’s more a time of appreciation; a time of gazing into the heart and looking at the reflections, listening for the echoes, of our experience in Communion. In that looking and listening, we may experience the peace and affirming love of Christ; we may feel the call or even the desire to change; we may be summoned outside of ourselves to new tasks or relationships or attitudes that the real presence of Christ in the gospel and the Eucharist and the people with whom we celebrate it have awakened in our hearts, made in the image of the God of love. No wonder they say that silence is golden.

PATHS HIGH SCHOOL CONFIRMATION PROGRAM REGISTRATION

Registration is now being accepted for PATHS, our two year high school Confirmation program for the 2017-2018 school year. Registration is for both 1st and 2nd year students; students in the 2nd year must re-register again this year.

The program consists of 12 sessions in each of the two years: 4 large group sessions in our Parish Gym, keynoting a speaker, music and a student reflection. There are also 8 small group sessions hosted in a catechist’s home. We are using Matthew Kelly’s program titled Decision Point, which has been well received by the students and catechists. Students are also expected to volunteer in the community over the two years. Second year candidates are required to participate in the Spiritus Retreat, a one day interactive retreat, at the Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. More information about the program is on our website under Faith Formation—Youth/Young Adult Ministry—Confirmation Preparation.

Please register by Friday, June 30th. Early registration helps with planning our program more effectively and also informs us as to the number of catechists we need. For your convenience, registration/payment is online. The link is on our website under the Confirmation Preparation page or Upcoming Registrations. For more information, email Michael Hugo at [email protected] or Karen Poglitsch at [email protected].

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? The Saint Anne Catholic Community welcomes those who may have an interest in developing a relationship with Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults are brought into the Church through Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation. We invite you to consider joining other adults on their journey of spiritual formation in this engaging, dynamic, respectful and spiritual process.

For more information or to have a conversation, contact Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 or [email protected].

BAPTISM SESSION 2: DATE MODIFICATION Please note that our next baptism Session 2 will be Sunday, July 9th, at 7:00 p.m., in the church. No R.S.V.P. is needed! Please note the change from the original date, Sunday, July 16th. If you have any questions, contact Michael Beard, Pastoral Associate, at [email protected] or 847.620.3070.

Human Concerns

HOUSE OF HOPE • PROJECT HOPE • GIFTS OF HOPE

House of Hope Retail Store and Donation Center will be closed for Independence Day on

Saturday, July 1st through Wednesday, July 5th.

Both will re-open on Thursday, July 6th.

HOUSE OF HOPE NEEDS HELP! Due to the continued generosity of our faithful donors, House of Hope is in urgent need of help to process clothing donations. Our store is drowning in blessings! Donating a few hours a week to the store that funds all of the amazing outreach work done by Saint Anne would help House of Hope function in an optimal, sustainable manner. The following positions need to be filled:

FIRST SORTER: Sort clothing donations at the first stage of the process; open bags and verify that donations are in sellable condition. Requires 4 hours/week. Any time between 9:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m.

HANGER: Hang clothing for sale. Once trained, do whenever available to lend a helping hand.

CLOTHES HOUND: A great job for someone who knows and loves clothes! Sort clothes into quality categories, then tag and price. Preferred 4 hours/week, Tuesday afternoons, Wednesdays or Thursdays.

The immediacy of the need can be seen in the photos below. The photo on the right was taken only 10 days after the photo on the left. With the quantity of donations that community members loving bestow upon the store, more volunteers are needed. If you can help the Saint Anne community serve the poor by volunteering a few hours a week to House of Hope, please contact Sharon Rolf, Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected] or 847.550.2000. Thank you!

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at 847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish office at 847.382.5300.
