Of Interest to All… NEW CAMPING OPPORTUNITY!! For the first time, WI 4-H Camp Upham Woods is offering an open enrollment camp! So if you are age 8-13 and are looking for a different camping experience than our local 4-H camp, check out: https://fyi.uwex.edu/uphamwoods/files/2016/03/Open-Enrollment-Camp.pdf for more details. This camp is July 15-18 at Upham Woods, which is just north of Wisconsin Dells along the Wisconsin River. Canoeing, hiking, archery and campfires are just some of what they offer. Cost is $120. 4-H Softball League Our 4-H Softball League is tentatively set to begin on Sunday, June 5th! New: Games will be played on Sunday evenings this year. Final team schedules will be mailed out to softball coaches as soon as team rosters and payments are received. The deadline to submit a team registration for your

Club is April 1st, - see the March Cloverline clip return. This will give 4-H teams a head start on reserving ball diamonds.

Youth-In-Action Program Community involvement is one of the pillars on which 4-H is founded. Now is the time of year when clubs plan their community service projects. Why not go one step further and get involved in Youth-In-Action? How? Clubs can pick up a “Plan of Action” sheet from the UW-Extension Office to plan your proposed project(s) for the year. This form is to be included in your scrapbook. Then, keep a picture record of your activities for your scrapbook (a good project for youth leaders!). The scrapbook is due Oct. 1st to the UWEX Office and will be judged and cash awards will be given. Give your club recognition for their community service projects. Be a Youth-In-Action club! Clubs may receive up to $50 for their efforts!

Website for 4-H Project Info and Learning Now that the 4-H year is underway and members are getting into 4-H project work, know that Wisconsin 4-H has a great website with lots of information to help you get started in your project, things to make and do, tips for exhibiting at the fair, ideas for project leaders and on-line learning activities. Just go to http://4h.uwex.edu and scroll down to see project categories. Select yours from the list and away you go on a great learning adventure! Caution on Roadside Clean-Ups! If your 4-H club will be conducting roadside cleanups, please do not open any bottles or containers with liquid in them! Although usually harmless, bottles found on the roadside could possibly contain something caustic or dangerous to eyes or skin. We don’t want to take any chances with child safety. Wristband procedure for County Fair The Shawano Area Agricultural Society will again use the wristbands. All eligible 4-H Members and Leaders will receive a wristband. Leave this wristband ON during the entire fair. If anyone’s wristband comes off or has to be removed before the fair is over, go to the main fair office and get a

replacement before leaving the grounds that day. Members found not wearing wristband will forfeit their fair premiums!

Youth News and Happenings 4-H Summer Camp: Back by Popular Demand! July 25-29 We have a great staff of teens and adults this year that have already spent many hours in training and preparation for your child to spend five days of fun with them! This is a great chance to spend time outdoors, make new friends, and maybe even learn a bit! Activities already in the schedule are swimming, a carnival, Raccoon Circles (team building), campfires, hikes, lots of games, and the 6th and 7th graders also get the chance to go horseback riding and canoeing! Our camp food is awesome, just ask former campers. We also have a health supervisor and lifeguard on staff. This is also open to non-4-H members so feel free to invite a friend! 5th graders will have a day hike learning various camping & hiking skills and making their own lunch. The 6th & 7th graders will have an optional campout that is much more adventurous! This campout will leave camp, hike to their campsite, make their shelter and supper, learn more survival skills on the trail, sleep out and make breakfast on the trail before returning to camp! If you are a 6th or 7th grader and would like to participate in this campout, please indicate this on your registration so we can plan accordingly. You will not be able to go if you did not sign up. Camp is a great deal at $90 for 5 days and 4 nights! This includes the bus transportation to and from Camp Susan (north of Antigo), all meals and lodging. Those in 6th or 7th grade, wishing to go on a 2 hour trail ride by horseback, only pay an additional $20. Some clubs help members pay for part of the cost of camp. Maybe your club could discuss this. Camp Sponsorships are also available from the Shawano County 4-H Leaders, Inc for those in financial need. Contact the UWEX office at 715-526-6136 for more information. Sign up soon as rates go up an additional $10 after May 31. The registration form is in this Clover Line and online.

Camp and Award Trip Sponsorships Available If your 4-H family is currently experiencing financial difficulties, scholarships are available to help with the cost. Those who would like assistance with 4-H camp may receive a $50 sponsorship. In regards to other trips, the fund can be used to cover up to half of the member’s portion of the total cost of the trip. There is an application available either from the UW-Extension Office or on our website at http://shawano.uwex.edu/ and search for “sponsorships”. To be eligible to receive a sponsorship, you will be required to work in the 4-H Food Stand to help replenish the fund.

Club Secretary Tips Thank you to all the club secretaries who are submitting copies of minutes to the UW-Extension office. Terri and Joe do read them to stay in touch with what’s happening in your club.

· If you wish, you can email your minutes to: [email protected] or [email protected] ,

or FAX them to 715-526-4875 · When it comes to your books to turn in at the

end of the year, minutes and any lists do not have to be written on the forms in your secretary book. If you wish, they can be done on the computer, typed, or written on another sheet of paper. Photocopies are fine!

· The same thing applies to club calendars. If your club makes a yearly schedule to give out to families, just include that.

Remember that club secretaries who turn in minutes promptly to the UWEX office and turn in a completed secretary book at the end of the year are eligible for a Secretary Award at the County 4-H Experience. Congratulations on your role as secretary this year.

Attention State Fair Dairy and Livestock Exhibitors! Started in 2013,Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy and Livestock Exhibitors must submit all entry information and fees DIRECTLY to state fair either on-line or via regular mail. Local county UWEX Offices will still be informed of State Fair youth programs but will not be involved in the entry process. Junior exhibitors must still be a member in good standing with an approved youth organization and be enrolled by March 1 of the current year to be eligible. Junior Show entry deadlines will be: June 1st postmark for those entering by mail and paying by check or money order. June 1st, 7:00pm for those entering online and paying with a credit or debit card. Entry information is posted on www.wistatefair.com . Specific questions can be sent via email to [email protected] or by phone to Brian Bolan at 414-266-7000. After the June 1st deadline, State Fair will verify participant eligibility with the respective approved youth organization, local UWEX Agent and/or Fair Board. Shawano County will conduct an informational/planning meeting on May 3rd for all prospective dairy cattle exhibitors to confirm who plans to participate (see corresponding article). This is necessary for youth center bed requests (first come – first serve basis), to determine how many chaperones are needed, etc. Remember, your UWEX Office will no longer be collecting entries for exhibitors and mailing them in. All animal exhibitors will be responsible for getting their own entries and payment submitted by the deadlines shown above. If you have any questions or difficulty finding entry information on the State Fair website, contact Joe at the UWEX Office at 715-526-6136 or [email protected].

County Fair Livestock Project Update Here are some key points to remember about the Shawano County 4-H/FFA Livestock Project (Beef, Sheep, Swine and Meat Goats) for 2016: · Breeding classes for swine WILL be allowed

at the Shawano County Fair this year. This includes all classes for boars, gilts and sows. Feeder pig classes WILL also be allowed. Exhibitors will recall that breeding and feeder pig classes were eliminated during 2014 to help control the spread of PEDV in swine. These classes were reinstated for the 2016 fair. See the Fair Premium Book for classes. Note: Bring swine breeding stock to the fair at your OWN RISK.

· The Shawano County Fair Swine show will NOT be a terminal show in 2016.

· There WILL be a spring weigh-in for beef, sheep, swine and meat goats.

Beef – Saturday, April 9th at Equity Livestock Barn in Bonduel, 9:00am to 11:00am Sheep & Goats– Thursday, May 5th at Shawano County Fairgrounds, 5:30pm to 6:30pm Swine – Saturday, May 7th at the Shawano County Fairgrounds, 9:00am to Noon · All exhibitors must pick up a DNA

Sample/RFID Ear Tag kits at the Shawano County UWEX Office before species weigh-in date. Cost of the kits will be $7.00 per animal. Please bring a check payable to “Shawano County 4-H Leaders” or bring exact change if paying with cash. Animals MUST be ear-tagged by exhibitor prior to weigh-in.

· DNA samples must be submitted by the exhibitor, to the Testing Lab by May 15, (postmarked)

· Livestock Project Contracts and COOL Affidavits MUST be submitted on your species weigh-in day.

· On August 1, the following items must be submitted to the UWEX Office: Your County Fair Entry, Sale Animal Photo and COPY of your Livestock Project Record Sheet, completed up to August 1.

· Since 2015, exhibitors only have to earn TWO

Livestock Meeting Credits each year, instead of three as in prior years. Remaining Livestock Credit meetings are scheduled for June 14 & 23 and July 16. All exhibitors must have earned their two Livestock Meeting Credits by August 1st. If you attended any livestock meetings or shows conducted in other counties, proof of attendance must be submitted to the UWEX Office by August 1.

There are several other points we need to make with all animal exhibitors: 1. You are responsible for your project animal

right up until the time it is loaded on a truck to leave the fair! Animal pens are to be cleaned daily and animals cared for by 10 am every day, and again later each day as needed - because the fair opens to the public at 9:00am. Do NOT place new sawdust on top of old, wet bedding. Remove wet bedding and replace with new sawdust. If you don’t, your pen will smell terrible, attract flies and we WILL come looking for you to clean your pens properly. Hog exhibitors are expected to clean manure out of feed and water pails whenever it occurs! Check your animals several times throughout the day and “touch up” your pens as needed. Also fill waterers regularly.

2. All county fair show entries are due at the

UWEX Office on or before August 1st! Final responsibility to get fair entries turned in on time is YOURS! It is NOT your 4-H leader or FFA advisor’s job to “track you down” to get your entry in on time! Online fair entries are strongly encouraged. Contact Joe or Jamie at the UWEX Office if you have any questions about rules or requirements for the Shawano County Fair.
