April 27, 2011 The Hardy
Heartline
Dear Church Family and Friends,
Cindy and I will be moving on soon to a new location to serve the Lord. We are moving to Woodcrest UMC
in Lumberton, Texas. Our last Sunday will be June 5th. We leave with a sense of sadness, because we have
grown to love this warm-hearted congregation. We have had a good ministry here at Hardy and are so
thankful for all of you. Your new pastor, Preston Greenwaldt, will be serving you soon. I am confident that
he will serve you well! His first Sunday will be June 12th.
In the peace of Christ,
Rev. Garry Masterson
Good News from Preston
I cannot wait to meet the Hardy church family, but before my family gets there I want to share with you a
little about us. I was born and grew up in Longview, and I am so excited about coming back to East Texas.
My wife Kristin grew up in the Houston area. We met each other in College Station at the Methodist Stu-
dent Ministries on campus. Kristin finished her nursing degree at Texas Woman’s University, and I com-
pleted my Masters of Divinity at TCU. We have now been married for five years. William Thomas is the
newest addition to our family. He just celebrated his first birthday on tax day.
Kristin and I love to travel, read, and watch movies in our spare time. We love the church and are so ex-
cited about joining you for all of the great activities that Hardy offers. William loves eating ice cream and
smoothies, balls, and playing outdoors. He cannot wait to try out your new playground. It will be such a joy
to meet you in just a few short weeks. You will all be in our prayers as I am sure we will be in yours as we
move to join you.
Grace and peace,
Rev. Preston Greenwaldt
We’re the church
with a warm heart

A BIG thanks to all the folks in the choir for all the hard work and effort they
put into our Palm Sunday and Easter music this year. Without the choir it’s
just Micah waving his arms around, and what fun would that be? GREAT
JOB CHOIR!!!!! Another BIG thanks to the handbells for the GREAT job they
did on Palm Sunday! Thanks for all your hard work!
Every Sunday we pray the Lord’s Prayer together. In this
prayer we say, “gGve us this day our daily bread”. Have you ever taken a minute to
really think about what this means? Was Jesus talking about actual bread? Was He us-
ing a metaphor? What is this “daily bread”?
In this part of the prayer, Jesus is referring to whatever it is we need for today. This might be physical, as in actual
bread to sustain our physical bodies, but it could also be metaphysical, as in emotional strength to make it through
the day. Essentially, Jesus is saying that we should ask the Father to provide us with the sustenance we need to
make it through that day.
Often we want to ask the Father to provide us with what we want, but Jesus is telling us to ask Him for what we
need. When we wake each day, we should ask our Father to provide us with what we need for today…our daily
bread. If we ask, He will provide and we will have the strength we need for each day.

Dear Church Family,
I have known since I was nine years old that this church is very special. For all my life you, and those who went before you, have stepped up to combat any of my problems and prayed them away. Thank you!
Thank you, each and everyone, for your love, calls, cards, and especially for your prayers during my latest hospital visit.
A very special thanks is extended to Brother Garry for his visits, his discussions, and his wonderful prayers. He is a tremendous warrior for our Lord and His Kingdom. We have nothing to fear.
In His love,
Rita Westbrook
TOMMY PHILLIPS OPEN: A ROUSING SUCCESS!
Months of preparation truly paid off for Hardy’s first annual golf tournament. Special thanks go to the
committee of James and Linda Moffatt, Charlotte Nyman, Jeanne Lee and Mary Lou Thornton. James
Moffatt spent many hours making sure everything was properly set up, all details were covered, and his
partner Linda definitely did her share in being “his secretary and go-to sidekick.” Charlotte Nyman never
ceases to amaze us! What a great public relations director Hardy has! Jeanne Lee did much of the foot-
work seeking sponsors and arranging for gifts. It was definitely a Hardy Team effort.
Sixteen golf teams participated in the tournament that was sponsored by 16 businesses/individuals!
The team sponsored by Lee’s Catfish on which one of Hardy’s members played (Sky Crane) won the tour-
nament. Notes of thanks will also be sent to several businesses that provided prizes for drawings.
Lunch was enjoyed by the participants and guests. Thanks be to God for the beautiful weather which
couldn’t have been nicer. The day was a fitting tribute to a wonderful man and his family and a great
beginning to a tradition which we hope will continue through the years.

“Happenings”; then, click on “Photos”; finally click on “Hardy Memorial Tommy Phillips Open.”
A GLORIOUS HOLY WEEK—Each service of Holy Week was very meaningful. A special thank you goes to
Hardy’s worship team and to the music department for the many hours of preparation.
Thanks also to those who helped to make the Easter Egg Hunt a success: Sharma Castillo and her army
of parents who came early and stayed late in preparation and clean up, Dee Dee Williams and her youth
members who hid the eggs and coordinated the actual hunt, and the Easter bunny which made a cameo
appearance! It was great seeing the large number of children, parents, and grandparents who attended,
and the new playground was certainly a hit!
What greater opportunity to celebrate our lives as Christians than during this special holy week!

children of all levels of ability.

the youth department.
The event will feature special music and a ribbon cutting by Karen Coulter, Emily’s mom.
