Knowledge of the Budget Process

• Identifying who will decide how funds will be dispersed varies from school system to school system.

• Understanding the funding process and communicating the needs of the media center allows the media specialist to budget carefully and keep well documented resource that you think need to be purchased for the media center.

Planning and Implementing

• Identify collection goals and establish yearly budget.

• Assess collections to determine curriculum needs.

• Requesting funds should be itemized with the most current price documented.

• Several states have developed network projects to collaborate with school’s libraries to offer services and resources.

Two other options the school’s media center can take to offset the cost of a budget or for raising money for the media Center

Creating Initial Collections

Creating a collection of books and other materials into a library, involves several functions

• Creating the oversight or governance structure• Defining the mission and purpose of the

organization• Securing funding• Planning• Developing a collection

Shifting or Moving Collections

Moving and shifting collections are necessary. This might occur due to redesign of the space remodeling, relocating etc.

• Weed the collection before moving• Double check shelves to ensure space is

available for collection• Install, test, and check technology resources

after relocating

Closing Collections(Tips)

• A timeline should be established once the media specialist knows the last day of school.

• If a grade level leaves a school or a new grade level is added to the school, the collection will need to be assessed and adjusted to meet student and curriculum needs.

• The media specialist should follow any existing policies or regulations for disposition and disposal of resources.
