furniture auctions. The pair looked magnificent, and was of exquisite workmanship, measuring3.2 meters high, 1.9 meters wide and 0.75 meterdeep. Made of huanghuali wood throughout. The wood was excellent and the wood materialwas of a big mass. Up and down the doorplateon the surface was carved with cloud anddragon lines in relief. On the lower part theplate inside and across was carved with lines ofsea water animals of good omen. Copper orna-ments like joint leaves and surface leaves wereall gilded. The article was supposed to be usedby prince-level imperial relatives. The auction scene was thrilling and exciting.Starting the offer from 3.5 million yuan, thebuyers quickly responded. scrambling with wit and bravery. The price wentup by a seesaw rate of 50,000 yuan and 100,000yuan. When the competitive price climbed toover six million yuan, the bidder on the leftwithdrew from the contest. A "black horse" in-truded in when the auctioneer Gao Deming wasabout to bang his gavel. A middle- aged gentle-man from behind raised his plate. The hall wasfilled with an ovation all of a sudden. The ambi-tious buyer in the front hall refused to yield, and the "black horse" kept in hot pursuit. Theprice increased at a progressive rate of 200,000yuan. Finally the "black horse" ended in defeat. The big wardrobe was transacted at the sky-rocketing price of 9.438 million yuan. Thischalked up a world record auction price of anyancient Chinese furniture amid thunderous ac-claim in the full house.

SMALL AUCTION, BIG BUSINESS

People think highly of the Weekend Auctions ofChina Guardian, saying it has changed or influ-enced the collection and auction market in main-land China and even in Hong Kong and Taiwanand has opened a brand new space with muchwider vision, richer resources and strongervitality. In 2002, China Guardian WeekendAuctions, praised by overseas media as "smallauction with big business," fulfilled the targetof annual transaction volume of 30 million yuan. Many people feel confused: Why did the ChinaGuardian community, so ambitious at the be-ginning and so determined to seize the high-profit end of cultural relics market, think ofopening "small auction" after successful "bigauction" one after another in 1994 and furthersucceed in opening up the second battle fieldwhich was interesting and later proved to befruitful? Chen Dongsheng spoke out the original con-sideration in a frank and brief manner: Every-thing is diversified, so it is true with artisticcreation and the collectors, and we believe theart market is without exception. The "tower pin-nacle" representing the maximum grade and

value of art is no doubt important, but the pow-erful "tower body" still merits attention andrespect. We noticed this potential resource atan early stage and analyzed the benign interac-tion between "small auction" and "big auction"as well as the possible conflict or friction be-tween the two. Of course, we paid more atten-tion to the role of "small auction" in disseminat-ing auction knowledge and attracting atten-tion from more social circles to the auctionmarket. Another starting point is a very realis-tic consideration. Although the first "big auc-tion" of China Guardian was a success at onestroke, there was no reliable legal guaranteefor the current market environment, and thesecond battlefield was opened to provide

against a rainy day. As the first person responsible for ChinaGuardian Weekend Auctions, Kou Qin addedone detail. At that time, the nation had juststarted on a trial basis the practice of "two off-work days" system, or popularly known as "bigweekend." For this reason, the WeekendAuctions was firstnamed as "Big Week-end Auctions" andwas changed into itspresent name afterseveral auctionswere held. Accord-ing to Kou Qin, the"small auction" ofChina Guardian hasundergone a diffi-cult development. Itwas first prepared inthe Military Mu-seum in the hot sum-mer of 1994 and wasformally opened inChaoyang Gymna-sium in November

From 1998, the "small auction" wasmoved back to the corporate headquarters andthe auction place was also moved into ParagenHotel and the present Jianguo Garden Hotel.

Consulting the Beijing Youth Daily of 1995, wefound a special column dedicated to ChinaGuardian Weekend Auctions, and from this, wemight get a clue to the development of ChinaGuardian's "small auction". ----On November 13, 1994, with the last gavelof the first China Guardian Weekend Auctions,it snowed for the first time this year afterthewinter came. It was learned thatthe bidders to this weekend auction were notconfined to Beijing. Visitors from Liaoning,Shandong, Tianjin, Shanghai, Sichuan, Gansu,Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujina, Guangdong as well asJapan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tai-wan and the US either made a special trip orstopped over to attend this auction. ----An increasing number of people are par-

This is attribut-able to the proper price orientationof sellers, the strict selection andcareful organization of auctioneers, and more importantly, the expan-sion of buyer base and their increas-ing enthusiasm for investment andcollection.

At present, the Department of Week-end Auctions boasts a powerfulteam. Cao Li has assumed the mis-cellaneous executive managementaffairs.
