Williamsburg to Debut Lighting Line with Robert Abbey

3/7/14

Williamsburg has announced its newest licensing venture: a lighting line with Robert Abbey. Launching at High Point Market, the collection will feature 12 lighting families that incorporate a sophisticated, contemporary take on 18th-century design. Robert Abbey shows in space W244 in the International Home Furnishings Center.

Inspiration for the line stems from period pattern books, molded brick chimneys and elaborate chair details, with rich colors and bold shapes, Williamsburg said. The black crystal Dunmore lamp, for example, is based on the splat of a Virginia-made chair, while the Ming Lamp is in the shape of a crystal and glass pagoda, both of which are rooted in 18th-century global chic themes, it added. The color palette includes such shades as Mayo Teal, Carter Gray and Parrot Green, which come from Benjamin Moore’s historically authentic Williamsburg Color collection. Available at retail in November, the line will retail between $250-$750.

“We are delighted to work with the incredibly talented design team at Robert Abbey,” said Liza Gusler, product manager, Williamsburg. “They appreciate that the proportions, shapes, colors and textures of architecture and furnishings seen in Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City have timeless appeal.”

Ken Wilkinson, president of Robert Abbey, added, “Colonial Williamsburg is recognized the world over for the part it played in the American Revolution and our country’s history. New fellowship based at library

Scholar will be in residence

3/7/14

A Pennsylvania-based nonprofit is teaming with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to create a new fellowship based at the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library. Its purpose will be to study America's founding principles.

The Jack Miller Center is a foundation based in a Philadelphia suburb and partners with faculty, administrations and students at colleges across the country to promote study of American political thought and history.

Currently it is involved with more than 700 professors at 253 campuses, and is supporting academic programs at 55 campuses, including Ivy League institutions and state universities.

Recipients of the new fellowship will advance scholarship "that will contribute to a deeper understanding of America's founding principles and history through the resources at Colonial Williamsburg's John. D. Rockefeller Jr. Library," according to a statement announcing the new program.

The fellowship will come with a $2,500 per month stipend and will cover a period of one to three months. Fellows will be expected to be in residence at the library and to participate in the intellectual life of the foundation's research and education campus. Fellows will have an opportunity to apply to rent the Bruton Heights Scholar Cottage located near the library or the Prentis Kitchen in Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area.

"The support from the Jack Miller Center will provide access to the resources of the Rockefeller Library for scholarly study of our founding principles," said Jim Horn, director of the library and vice president for research and historical interpretation for Colonial Williamsburg. "Students who examine primary sources such as wills, letters, newspaper articles and diaries will gain a real understanding of what the founders were thinking when they laid the foundation of a new, self-governing nation."

Doctoral candidates, scholars and independent researchers who wish to apply for the fellowship are being asked to submit a succinct project description and resume.

Proposals must be submitted electronically as a PDF or Word file [email protected]. In addition, three letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the library via email or by U.S. mail to Fellowship Committee, John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, VA 23187-1776 USA.
