The Colorado Chapter (2016-17)

Tonight, the Colorado Chapter celebrates its 24th class of outstanding high school scholar-athletes and almost a quartercentury of service to amateur football in the state of Colorado.

The Colorado Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame was charted on July 1, 1992,and is one of 120 chapters in 47 states that make up the organization. Its members include former players, coaches, athletics administrators, educators, officials, news media and football fans, all of who enjoy the game of football andshare in its purposes and goals.

One of its primary goals is to recognize and honor the top high school football student-athletes in the state – youngmen who have distinguished themselves on the field, in the classroom and in extracurricular and community activitieswhere leadership abilities are displayed.

The 24th annual awards banquet recognizes the top 14 student-athletes chosen from a field of statewide nominees andselected by an impartial committee of six persons with diverse backgrounds. The criteria for selection are based on acombination of athletic ability (40 percent), academic achievement and character (40 percent) and citizenship andservice (20 percent).

It is also the only chapter nationwide that selects collegiate players of the week and a collegiate All-State team, with2016 marking the 14th straight year of such recognition which began for the 2003 season. And beginning in 2014, thechapter began recognizing an Academic All-Colorado team comprised of the 10 football-playing colleges and universitiesin the state, as well as selecting a Scholar-Athlete of the Year (based upon academic and athletic excellence).

The chapter is also looking forward to celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018.

John & Marcia Beake Jim Turner Award (service to Colorado youth football)

John and Marcia Beake have been making thegame of football better in Colorado since the1980s. Their impact has been felt at high school, college and professional levels.

John began his coaching career at Nyack(N.Y.) High School where his teams lost only four

games over the course of six seasons and then at the New York MilitaryAcademy; on the college level, he coached at Penn State and ColoradoState. He joined the Broncos in 1979 as their director of pro personneland became general manager in 1985, a position he held until named vicepresident of administration in 1999. John went to five Super Bowls withthe Broncos (winning two for the ’97 and ’98 seasons). He more thanhelped owner Pat Bowlen make the Broncos one of the NFL’s modelfranchises, as he spent 15 seasons as general manager (1984-98), withthe team compiling a 152-86-1 mark during that span. He had also wona Super Bowl ring with Kansas City as its running back coach for 1969and also was the run game coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. He isnow in semi-retirement after finishing his administrative career as theNFL’s vice president of player development and managing director and aconsultant for Europe league football operations.

As for Marcia, she was a high school physical education teacher in the1960s, and eventually became a graphic artist – she painted most of theBroncos’ “game ball” awards throughout the 1980s. She started the FortCollins High School Booster Club in the 1980s, and served on the boardof directors for the Denver-based Air Force’s Quarterback Club for sixyears in the 90s and was instrumental in its growth during her term aspresident. Her most important contribution in relation to the NFF’sColorado Chapter was her commitment to the Play It Smart program;without Marcia’s energy, the program may not have gotten off the ground. The Beakes have three children (Jerilyn, Chip and Chris) and sevengrandchildren.

Bob LitchardKeith Jensen Award (service on behalf of the Colorado NFF chapter)

When Bob Litchard was asked to join theNational Football Foundation Colorado Chapter’sboard of directors, he accepted withouthesitation, saying, “I owe everything I have tothe game of football.” But the sport owes hima bit too.

He has made contributions as a player, coach and administrator. “Litch”was named All-New England during his playing days at Springfield College(and as baseball player, he was a second-team All-American in 1956). Hesigned with the New York Giants in 1956, but injuries made hisprofessional career short-lived. He coached in the high school ranks forfive years before joining the Brown University staff in 1962; he alsocoached at Cornell before transitioning to a career in development in 1975.In 1980, Litch with his wife Jan got the call to move west where he servedas a vice president of the CU Foundation for 21 years. Working alongsidewith athletic director Bill Marolt, he played a key role in getting the DalWard Center built, helping educate CU supporters on the importance oftop quality facilities, lessons that are still being heed today.

Litch is currently an honorary board member of the Chapter, as heremains committed to giving back to the “Game of Football.”
