Go GREEK: Kick-off CARNIVAL

IFC/ PHA Chillin’ & Grillin’

A Great Greek Welcome: From Moore and Sanford,

to Lynch and Laurel, and

all the way to Hawthorne

Hall, we saw the influx of

thousands of new faces as

our Greek Community

helped with Freshman

Move In once again on

Friday, August 20th. Over

20 of our chapters

unloaded cars, carried

boxes, rolled suitcases,

and passed out waters and

flyers to the new fresh-

men in the sweltering hot

sun. This was a great op-

portunity for

all of our

organizations

to get their

names seen

on campus

and offer a

helping hand to the new-

est members of the UNC

Charlotte community.

The Office of Fraternity

and Sorority Life actively

promotes service among

our organizations and this

event was great way to

kick off our year!

The smell of charcoal on the grill

and sound of ener-

getic voices filled

the air on Monday,

August 23rd as all

of the Greek men

Getting Ready: Workshops, Retreats, and More!

P A G E 3 S U M M E R / F A L L 2 0 1 0

This year, recruitment started

early for the IFC and PHA.

Both organizations began

preparations for Fall Recruit-

ment weeks starting back in

July and August! In order to

ensure a successful fall semes-

ter, the Office of Fraternity and

Sorority Life worked with the

councils to plan retreats, work-

shops, and pre-recruitment

activities to get current mem-

bers prepared for the weeks

ahead. They also took time to

introduce potential new mem-

bers to everything our amazing

Greek community has to offer.

The PHA and Sigma Rho Chi

women went on

a retreat to

Camp Canaan,

SC. The women

completed a

ropes course,

survived kayak-

ing, and participated in daily

workshops to learn the ins-

and-outs of formal recruit-

ment. The IFC men had a day-

long ―Phired Up!‖ workshop

where they learned about

recruiting with Social Excel-

lence. At its core, Social Ex-

cellence is the ability to deeply

connect with, build relation-

ships with, and engage with

other human beings.

Hazing Prevention

Week

Lending a Helping Hand

NATIONAL HAZING PREVENTION WEEK This year’s National Haz-

ing Prevention Week

(NHPW) took place

from September

27th—October 1st.

All five councils came

together to promote

the importance of

―Saying No to Haz-

ing.‖ Chi Upsilon

Sigma National Latin So-

rority, Inc. and Lambda

Theta Phi Latin Fraternity,

Inc. presented excellent

information sessions to the

Greek community: ―CUS:

My Paddle is Not my

Weapon‖ and ―Hazing:

Not just a MINER Thing!‖

in the Student Union. The

National Pan-Hellenic

Council also had a success-

ful showing at their

―Hazing, Hazing, Hazing!‖

program on Tuesday, Sep-

tember 28th.

One of the highlights of

the week is always the

Banner Competition, and

this year everyone’s par-

ticipation gave the judges

a difficult task. Chi Omega

took home first place (top

left), followed by Omega

Psi Phi (below left) and

Kappa Alpha Psi (bottom

right) who took home

2nd and 3rd place wins,

respectively.

Greeks, along with other

students, commemorated

event was a great success

Our Greeks were busy

this summer lending a

helping hand to the Char-

organizations

within the five

councils racked

up almost 1100

hours of service

between May and August

of 2010 at schools, librar-

ies, churches, 5Ks, food

banks, and local busi-

nesses! UNC Charlotte

and it is something our

UNC Charlotte students

can be proud of. Commu-

Alpha Phi Alpha

This past summer, members of the Al-pha Phi Alpha organization stayed busy helping with a recess program co-sponsored with Recreational Services to promote health and wellness in the Charlotte community. In preparation for the upcoming school year, members are also placing a higher level of importance on academics and are spending much more time focusing on school work to get their grade averages up! Alpha Phi Al-pha also worked with Omega Psi Phi on September 29th to host the “Know Your Rights” program which focused on stu-dents rights on and off campus.

Chi Phi

The members of the Chi Phi Fraternity participated in many activities this sum-mer. Members worked through intern-ships, relaxed at the pool, played sports in the yard, and traveled around the world to different locations. With the ac-ceptance of the Alumni Relations Award from the UNC Charlotte Greek Life Sys-tem, Chi Phi organization decided to apply for National Awards as well. Two members traveled to this year's National Congress in Boston, MA where they learned how to develop as a member of the Greek Life System and what it takes to get a job done according to the Na-tional Office standards. At the end of the awards ceremony, our Psi Delta Chapter was awarded the Outstanding Philan-thropic Service Award for the develop-ment of our Annual Haunted House, as well as the Outstanding Alumni Newslet-ter Award. This emphasizes Chi Phi’s impact on the community, and close contact with their alumni association.

Chi Upsilon Sigma

Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Soror-ity, Inc. was the first independent Latin sorority established in the U.S. It was founded by seven strong women with the desire to have a unique organization for women of all backgrounds and ethnici-ties to have a sisterhood to call their own. Chi Upsilon Sigma prides them-selves on being the “Queens of Stroll” because they were the first Latin sorority

to stroll and step. The UNC Charlotte chap-ter began in 2004 and has continued to grow and prosper ever since. Please visit their new website for more information on the chapter: http://cusuncc.webs.com/

Delta Zeta

Delta Zeta worked hard this summer to plan many fun and exciting events for their sis-terhood and the Greek community this se-mester. Delta Zeta teamed up with Chi Omega and sponsored a blood drive to promote Panhellenic Recruitment by offer-ing a $10 off coupon towards Recruitment sign up fees if they donated blood. The Sunday before recruitment, sisters of Delta Zeta participated in the Venture High Ropes Course on campus. This experience helped sisters with trust building skills and showed how good of a support system sis-ters can be in a time of struggle. Delta Zeta also walked in the Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Charlotte, NC on Septem-ber 25th to support and honor a sister's mother, who was one of the founding sis-ters of Delta Zeta on the UNC Charlotte Campus.

Lambda Theta Phi

Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. Is the first and largest Latin Fraternity in the Nation. These are a few programs to look out for this semester: October 20th: Who's Stalking Who? Dangers of Social Net-working and November 9th: The Ugly Truth. We hope to see you all there!

Phi Mu Alpha

Only months after becoming UNC Char-lotte's first official chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, the national music fraternity, the eleven men of the Sigma Beta chapter have just issued bids to their first class of probation-ary members. Led by Chapter President, Emmanuel Lewis, Sigma Beta is not slow-ing down. The fraternity is planning a campus-wide concert, called The Ameri-can Music Recital, set for mid-November. The show will feature local bands and artists reinterpreting contemporary Ameri-can classics as requested through a poll of UNC Charlotte students. Sigma Beta is also busily setting the stage for next se-mester's Queen City Invitational - a high school marching band competition to be hosted at UNC Charlotte by Sigma Beta and The Department of Athletics - the first of its kind at UNC Charlotte. For more information, contact Marc Gray at [email protected].

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Sigma Alpha Epsilon had an eventful sum-mer. As one of the newest fraternities on campus, their goal was to find new mem-bers who would match their high moral standards. The fraternity decided to adver-tise at Niner-Night during SOAR and had great success. Talking to all the incoming freshman was such a rewarding experi-ence, especially when the brothers saw how interested the new students were in Greek Life. When school started, SAE had organized rush events and had a great time at the slip n’ slide on the front fields and to simply watching football and play-ing pool in the Student Union. This year looks to be a great year for Greek Life on campus, and the chapter can only hope that this trend of students wanting to be the best continues to grow.

The IFC was busy this summer plan-

ning for recruitment in the Fall Se-

mester. The first kick-off event of the

New semester was sponsored by SGA

and was a speaker session for all or-

ganizations from “Phired Up.” This

recruitment workshop taught broth-

ers to not just recruit the few indi-

viduals you see everyday, but to re-

cruit the whole group. It’s all about

starting off with quantity so they can

pick the best quality. IFC also partici-

pated in the First Annual Greek Car-

nival. This great event brought in

over 1,000 students. With inflatable

rides, free shirts and food, and tons

of games. IFC also held the first an-

nual “Meet the Men” event in the

Lynch/Laurel Courtyard in early Sep-

Council’s Corner: Looking Back and Looking Ahead tember, which was also sponsored by

SGA, and brought out nearly 300

young men to learn about Greek Life

and to enjoy free food . The IFC is

striving to make each recruitment

better than the last. With the help

from SGA, their efforts have been

possible and the turn-out of potential

new members has been higher than

in past years. IFC is here to support

our chapters, in any way possible.

Panhellenic Association

Panhellenic President, Nikki Kral,

would like to thank everyone on a

great recruitment and congratula-

tions to all of the new women who

joined the Greek community! The

PHA Exec Board had a busy summer

and beginning of the semester in

preparation for this major event.

Once the semester started, we held

several pre-recruitment events such

as the Sorority Social, Red White Re-

cruit, movie night in the Student Un-

ion, a potluck dinner, and the First

Annual Greek Carnival. PHA’s Ex-

ecutive Board and SRC's also at-

tended Niner New Year and Rec Fest

Diversified Greek Council

The Greek Community at UNC Charlotte is growing at such a rapid pace. As it expands, we are excited to see the rise of culturally based organizations on our campus. Created by members of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. and Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., the Di-versified Greek Council's mission is to promote collaboration for the purpose of uniting Greek organizations under the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organi-zations (NALFO), Na-tional Asian Pacific Is-

lander American Pan-Hellenic Association (NAPA), and National Multicultural Greek Coun-cil (NMGC) on campus. The DGC is proud to be expanding with the addi-tion of our first multicul-tural fraternity, Psi Sigma Phi Multicultural Frater-nity, Inc. as well as other culturally based organiza-tions seeking to expand onto our campus. This unique council prides itself on diversity and promot-ing the individual cultures that make up each of its chapters. National Pan-Hellenic

has had a successful fall se-mester thus far. Programs such as their Yard Show and National Hazing Prevention Week program brought members of the university community together from many different organiza-tions. NPHC’s also cele-brated the return of Cone Late Night Parties with Fri-day’s Pajama Jam. NPHC is grateful for all that attended. The coming school year should bring plenty more exciting events, and NPHC is especially looking forward to the annual Step Show during Greek Week in April 2011!

Independent Council

The Independent Council at UNC Charlotte welcomes the

Sigma Beta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, which is a na-tional music fraternity. The organization is currently planning campus-wide con-certs and a spring invita-tional to bring other organi-zations to the UNC Char-lotte. It should be an exciting year for the Independent Council, and we look forward to seeing what they plan next!
