“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.” John 6:40
2
Dear Parishioners, I don’t know if you have seen a movie called Fireproof. It is a true story of a married couple who struggle to keep their relationship. It’s about a fireman whose marriage is dissolving. Just before his wife files for a divorce, his father, who is a Christian, talks to him and gave him what’s called “The Love Dare.” The Love Dare is a 40-day journey of applying biblical principles to marriage. As he takes the journey, he gets more and more educated about what God intended for marriage, and he learns more about what love could be. He gets to win back the heart of his wife, but not without some twists and turns along the way. This firefighter knows very well his profession, even to the point of making great sacrifices to save people’s lives. However, he is unable to make some sacrifices at home. Until he discovers Christ in his heart, he acknowledges that there is more joy in giving than in receiving. That is when he integrates God’s love into his life and understands that loving God and loving our neighbor are two sides of the same coin. When a couple enters into a covenant with God, they are affirming that not only through their own will but especially through the love of God they will stay in all moments with their partner whether good or bad because that love is no other thing but God. When a married couple comes to renew their vows before God, they are saying that not only have they been committed to each other, they also are affirming that God has been faithful to them. The fidelity to the partner does not come only from their desire to be loyal to his or her spouse. The grace of fidelity that married couples receive the day of the matrimony is the grace to be faithful to Jesus Christ as well. It is the fidelity to Him that makes a couple faithful to each other. From that fidelity, they are able to extend their love not only to their children but also they become fruitful in moral and spiritual ways. When couples let God enter into their lives, there is a spiritual reality that gives them a much deeper connection in their lives which enables them to establish not only a lasting but also a profound unity to each other. They understand that God is the one who has given them the strength when they are discouraged, the patience when they are upset, the hope when they face challenges and the love when they aren’t tolerant enough to each other. They see that it is God who has manifested to them in joyful moments as well as moments of sorrow. When the apostle Saint Paul praised the Thessalonians in today’s second reading, he says that they have become a model to all believers because they serve the living and true God with their faith in Jesus Christ. That is exactly what a married couple does. Their dedication to God and to each other becomes not only a nourishment to them but a leaven message from Christ to those near to them. Today’s message of Jesus is very specific. He doesn’t say that we should love God and love our neighbor only, he emphasizes that we should love God with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. That changes our whole view of how we love God and other people. Just like the movie Fireproof, when couples love God with all their heart, mind and soul then, they will be able to love their spouse and children in the same way and their love becomes fireproof. In Jesus and Mary,
From the Pastor
