Wednesday June 8 Featuring:
Kathy Gaul, designer for Meetinghouse Hill Designs
Wow, here we are in June already! I’m looking forward to seeing and
hearing our guest speaker, Kathy Gaul, as she comes with her displays
of wool designs and patterns that she has created herself, including
some 3-D pieces. All of her designs, by the way, can be made into cot-
ton creations: pillows, wall hangings, ornaments, rug patterns (if
you’re into rug hooking), and other ways you can adapt these original
patterns. She has some new creations, as well as a book on working
with wool called “Wool Applique Essentials”.
She will be speaking on her design process, as well as having kits and
patterns for sale that night.
To see more of her story and her designs and kits, see
meetinghousehilldesigns.com
For the meeting, bring:
• Anything for Show-and-Tell
• Summer Quilts
• Cash or check if you plan to purchase something from Kathy
Gaul

If you are into beading – and reading - you may enjoy Nancy Smeltzer’s website, “Fiber Fantasies Fiber Art-
ist” at http://www.fiberfantasies.com/ and blog “Buttons&beads&quilts!” Nancy does intense beading on her
quilts, and she writes intensely about them too! Because Nancy’s quilts are so heavily embellished, you really
need to close-up shots on her blog and the explanations of her process there to appreciate all the thought and
work that goes into her pieces. Many pieces are what Nancy calls “meditation gardens”, floral landscapes
made of buttons, beads and embroidery, and Nancy has integrated her spiritual and emotional healing journey
into many of her quilts.
On the blog site, be sure to check out Nancy’s past entries by clicking on the “Categories” list on the right side
of the screen. (One of my favorite entries is “Personal Archeology”: who of us has not had the experience of
cleaning up our sewing space, only to find forgotten treasures buried in the scraps and piles?) Those right-side
lists may need interpretation: “Blogroll” is a list of links to other fiber artists Nancy admires, not be confused
with “Blogs I Like” which are more “daily-life” type blogs. “Media Sources” are websites for magazines, etc.,
that Nancy finds inspiring, and “Supply Sources” are the companies where Nancy gets her materials. Despite
the labeling confusion, I found many sites on her lists worth exploring.

Fish, which symbolize abundance in
Chinese culture, play a prominent
role in this quirky piece from the
Zhuang people. When depicted in
pairs, like in the top left block, fish
also can reference fertility and marital
bliss. Near the center are two fish
swirling around each other; in this
format, they resemble the Daoist yin/
yang symbol for balance and har-
mony.
A few unique touches give this quilt
cover extra character: the buttons
placed where lines intersect, the
bird’s-eye weave of the border fabric, and the four blue triangles that meet to create an eye-
grabbing, off-center focus. Like most Southwest Chinese quilt covers, this piece's blocks were
constructed on a foundation and individually bound before the quiltmaker whip-stitched them
all together in a grid.
This piece is featured in Quilts of Southwest China, which runs June 3-September 28.
The textile traditions in China of making and using quilts or bedcovers have received little at-
tention by scholars, collectors, and museums; few examples are in public or private collections
and little has been published on them. The research and collecting done for Quilts of Southwest
China provides some of the first documentation of the intangible and tangible cultural heritage
associated with the practices of piecing and appliquéing fabric together to form artistic and
functional textiles.

HELP WANTED
Thank you to those who volunteered to work for CTQC in the coming months. Most of the positions advertised have been filled but we are still looking for someone to take over as Treasurer. Please contact Ginny [email protected] or Kathy [email protected]
Charitable Efforts
CTQC will continue to collect bags to give to the hospital in apprecia-
tion for the use of the meeting room. Bring any finished bags to up-
coming meetings and they will be delivered to the correct person.
We will also make stockings for the Parker Task
Force.
There is a two part pattern of the stocking Judi
handed out at the last meeting up on our website. It
is titled: Stocking #1. There is also a second stocking
pattern with instructions in case anyone wanted to
create the 'same' size stocking (when finished) but
sewn a little differently and with a little embellish-
ment. This stocking is titled: Stocking #2.
May Basket
This summer, you may take a long vacation, or just short jaunts close to home. Below are some ideas for looking up quilt shops as you travel out of our area, and also listed are some of the quilt activities along the Front Range of Colorado this summer.
The Row by Row Experience 2016
This summer, the Row by Row Experience is using the theme “No Place Like Home”. If you’ve been in to High Prairie Quilts recently, they already have the theme fabric just to the left of the door as you come into the shop. There are participating shops all over the U.S. and Canada, and they are listed on their website: rowbyrowexperience.com
Each shop offers a pattern (free) of a row in the “No Place Like Home” theme, or a kit with fabric (including the pattern) for a fee. Each shop also has a specialized fabric license plate to collect. If you care to participate further, collect 8 different patterns and create your own quilt and take it in to one of the shops where you got a pattern. If you are the first to bring in a finished quilt, you will receive a fabric prize. Please see the website for more details. Seeing finished quilt tops online last year was a lot of fun, and each one turns out unique. Have a family mem-ber from another state or area pick up a pattern for you, or collect them as you travel for a memory quilt. The list of shops on the Row by Row web-site gives you good ideas of shops to visit while on your travels. Travel and collect patterns June 21 - Sep-tember 6, 2016. Finished quilts can be taken in to participating shops until October 31, 2016 if no prize has been awarded yet in that shop. The shops are posting photos of finished quilts on their Facebook pages.

Meeting Night to Change in 2017
Our meeting night has been bounced around to different locations this year due to other sched-
uling at the hospital. In order to provide a more consistent meeting place and time, Common
Thread Quilt Club is planning to meet next year, 2017, on the 2nd Monday of each month at
the Parker Adventist Hospital. The conference room coordinator has not confirmed a space for
us yet, but she has suggested that this would be our best bet for next year (she will not know
for sure what applications will come in for 2017 until the application process is complete).
Stay tuned for further developments!
