What Do YOU Have to Say About It?For the next 25 SECONDS, let’s see how many words, phrases, and behaviors you can come up with to describe your thoughts about RESPECT.

Page 5: The Complete Cardinal Compendium A Guidebook for Totally ROCKing Out At Lawndale High School!

Lawndale High School PBIS Leadership Team 2013

What Does the D I c t I o n a r y Say About It?According to Webster’s Dictionary,

RESPECT means:

1) Honor or esteem for something or someone

2) Consideration for something or someone

3) Courteous regard for another person

R E S P E C T...HONOR, ESTEEM, CONSIDERATION, and COURTEOUS REGARD

All of the words above are ABSTRACT NOUNS.

Abstract nouns are ideas that cannot be touched with the hand or seen with the eye.

RESPECT and all of its synonyms--HONOR, ESTEEM, CONSIDERATION, and COURTEOUS REGARD--are abstract. They are ideas.

You cannot hold them the way you hold a pencil…

Nor lie down and sleep on them the way you do with your bed…

Nor can you pop them into your mouth and snack on them as you can with popcorn.

SO HOW WILL CARDINALS KNOW WHEN

THEY ARE BEING RESPECTFUL?

K I N D N E S S IS...Kindness is going out of your way to show support,

to offer help, or to give comfort to someone.

Kindness is doing a good deed that you aren’t required to do, but that you do anyway to make someone else’s day a little bit better and a little

bit brighter.

It’s niceness that really goes the extra mile….

What Kind of Kind Is It?KIND ACTION CATEGORY

(S)=Showing Support (H)=Offering Help(C)=Giving Comfort

Julissa is running late to class. Marco, a new student, is hopelessly lost. Julissa stops to point him in the direction of the 400-building. How is Julissa being kind to Marco?

Sitting on a bench near the softball field, Thuy begins to cry. Tashi is passing by. “Are you okay?” Tashi asks. Thuy nods her head, but continues to cry. Tashi gives her an understanding smile and says, “Don’t worry. We all have tough days. Everything will be okay.” How is Tashi being kind to Thuy?

Moises is trying out for the school talent show. He’s about to audition by singing a song that he wrote himself. On the CVCA stage, he looks out into the audience and sees the faces of his two best friends, Kevin and Minh, who have spray-painted, “Go, Moe!” on their t-shirts. How are Kevin and Minh being kind to Dominic?

Meet…Felip

e

The PresentationMayra just finished her presentation in Ms. Scott’s Biology class. It did not go well. First off, her notecards were all mixed up. Too nervous to fix them, she continued to read them even though, being out of order, they made no sense. She leaned too hard on the table in the front of the room, and knocked over the books that were stacked there. Finally, while walking back to her desk, she tripped over the cord to the projector, almost causing it to crash to the floor. When Mayra sat down, Felipe tore a page out of his notebook. He smirked as he handed it to her. Mayra read the note inside: “Epic fail. Shoot yourself.”

UNKIND?...REWIND!!

Page 41: The Complete Cardinal Compendium A Guidebook for Totally ROCKing Out At Lawndale High School!

Lawndale High School PBIS Leadership Team 2013

THINK About It!1) Given the difficult time Mayra had just experienced presenting in class, what form of kindness did she need most from her classmates, including Felipe? Did she need help? Support? Comfort?

2) We often act kindly towards others when we empathize with them. Empathy is an emotional connection to how someone else is feeling. When we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, we offer them the kindness we would want in that situation. If Felipe had been empathetic, he would have been much kinder to Mayra.

Take 30 seconds to rewrite Felipe’s note to Mayra. This time, compose it from the perspective of an empathetic Felipe who understands what the “K” in “ROCKS” really means.

Meet…

Mikkelle

The ‘Accident’Mikkelle has known Jason since 5th grade. She likes him…A LOT. He’s super-cute, athletic, and gets straight A’s. One day during Nutrition, she sees Jason having a long conversation with Kennadie. In Mikkelle’s opinion, they’re standing awfully close to each other. Just before they part ways, Jason reaches for Kennadie’s hand and squeezes it. Mikkelle has had enough. Making her way over to where Kennadie is watching Jason walk away with a dreamy smile on her face, Mikkelle pretends to trip, making sure to splash her grape juice all over Kennadie’s spotless white blouse.

UNKIND?...REWIND!!

Page 43: The Complete Cardinal Compendium A Guidebook for Totally ROCKing Out At Lawndale High School!

Lawndale High School PBIS Leadership Team 2013

Think About It!In the preceding scenario, Mikkelle’s jealousy over Jason caused her to treat Kennadie unkindly. Kennadie was an innocent victim of Mikkelle’s unhappiness.

If Mikkelle had taken a moment to think before acting out her plan to get back at Kennadie, she might have behaved differently.

A) Rewrite Mikkelle’s response to the situation. Create a mental conversation that Mikkelle should have had with herself to keep her from being unkind to Kennadie.

B) How could Mikkelle go about making amends to Kennadie? List three steps that Mikkelle should take to properly apologize for her unkind behavior.

Meet…

Sahar

The CircleSahar is handsome and he knows it. Because he’s so popular, he feels the need to control who gets into his circle. He can’t have dorks, fat kids, poor kids, or those with no swag on his team. So when Josh, a chubby nerd with bad shoes, starts to hang around, Sahar has to do something. Standing outside Mr. Mai’s math class during passing period one day, Sahar loudly tells Josh, “Listen, Urkel. I don’t know who told you that you were in, but you’re not. Look at you, Chunky! And for goodness’ sake, look at those shoes! My grandmother is younger than they are. Do yourself a big favor, dude. Get some friends who are on your level. I think we’re a tad bit out of your league.”

UNKIND?...REWIND!!

Page 45: The Complete Cardinal Compendium A Guidebook for Totally ROCKing Out At Lawndale High School!

Lawndale High School PBIS Leadership Team 2013

Think About It!Though handsome and popular, Sahar is obviously feeling extremely insecure. If he were really feeling as awesome about himself as he puts on, Sahar would never go out of his way to be so unkind to Josh. Insecure people (people who are unsure of who they are and what they have to offer) are often unkind to others in order to feel powerful.

Let’s give Sahar another chance to be kind.

Reimagine the scene between Sahar and Josh. Only this time, it’s not Sahar saying unkind things to Josh; it’s Sahar’s best friend, Armand. In this version, Sahar quickly steps up to Josh’s defense.

In your vision of this scenario, what does a more secure, more mature, much kinder Sahar say to unkind Armand?

Kindness RecapREMEMBER:

Kindness is going out of your way to show support, to offer help, or to give comfort to someone.

Kindness is doing a good deed that you aren’t required to do, but that you do anyway to make someone else’s day a little bit

better and a little bit brighter.

See kindness in action: Kindness Always Makes a Difference

Every Cardinal ROCKS because every Cardinal practices KINDNESS!

We go out of our way to support one another, to help one another, and to comfort one another.

Page 47: The Complete Cardinal Compendium A Guidebook for Totally ROCKing Out At Lawndale High School!

Lawndale High School PBIS Leadership Team 2013

JUST ImaginE....Imagine that Lawndale High was full of people practicing kindness every day like the students in the first video….

Imagine that Lawndale High was full of people who went out into their communities practicing kindness like the two young men in the second video….

Now, imagine that YOU play a very important role in making KINDNESS a daily reality on this campus & in your community…It’s actually true. YOU do!

So how will YOU make campus and community life

better and brighter because of your kindness?

THINK ABOUT IT! THEN, MAKE IT HAPPEN!

SAFETY: Sanctuary, Security, and Shelter

Every member of the Cardinal family has a right to learn and work in SAFETY.

We all bear responsibility to contribute to our school being a sanctuary, or a safe place, for all Cardinals.

·····

Now, go back to the brainstorm on the board.

Choose 7 of the safety hazards there and, with a partner, devise rules, steps, or procedures that would remove those hazards from the Lawndale High campus.
