GGuests fly into Butte, Montana and are picked
up by a shuttle provided by the Complete Fly
Fisher. Butte has a colorful history. It began
in the early 1870’s as a group of mining
camps and grew into a thriving community, at
one time controlling the world copper market.
When demand for copper diminished, the community fought to
remain relevant. As a result, the residents are proud and tough. The
community is a great place to tour. A fascinating history combined
with shopping, restaurants and pubs can keep one entertained
for days. Butte provides all the major services one would expect
in a city of approximately 35,000. Back in 1917, at the height of
the Copper Kings, the population registered
around 100,000.
The Complete Fly Fisher is located outside
of the community of Wise River. A small
mercantile, two bars and a community center
make up the town. With an economy that is centered around fishing
and ranching, there are great characters everywhere. Wise River
sits on the confluence of the Wise River and the Big Hole River,
surrounded by a half-million acres of peaks and lakes in the Pioneer
Mountains. The scenery is breathtaking.
Location
The Complete Fly Fisher Lodge is 36 miles from an international airport in Butte.
AcreageThe Complete Fly Fishing Lodge sits on 13.6 acres, bordering the Big Hole River. The neighboring property across the river is in the flood plain and therefore will never be changed by development. The upstream neighbor is a rancher and downstream is the Jerry Creek fishing access. Even though the property is under 15 acres, the landscape feels immense.

The cabins offer quality sleeping, privacy and late-
night socializing quarters. The Complete Fly Fisher
has 5 one-bedroom cabins that each sleep two
comfortably, and one to two-bedroom cabin. All of the
cabins have glassed-in porches. The two bedroom
has a complete kitchen. There is an additional log
cabin on the property that accommodates the onsite
Chef.
The Main Lodge has
two comfortable suites.
Recently, an old barn on
the property was artistically
remodeled into a 3-bedroom
2 1/2-bath home.
The Complete Fly Fisher
also has an annual lease,
which includes a Spring Creek Cabin with 3 additional
cabins, upstream from the Lodge. The Complete Fly
Fisher is being sold as a turn-key operation. Everything
one needs to operate will be included in the sale,
excepting a limited amount of personal property.
Improvements
Elegant improvements including the main lodge, cabins, barn and fly
shops make The Complete Fly Fisher a world-class getaway.
The BarnThe master suite offers two bedrooms, one bathroom and a half-bath on the second floor. It has been creatively remodeled to keep the intrinsically-charming characteristic of the barn, along with the conveniences of the 21st Century.
The Fly Shop and Outbuildings:The Complete Fly Fisher allows guests to bring their gear or they are able to outfit any angler thoroughly. The property has a fly shop, complete with dressing room and an assortment of gear. There’s a wood shop on the property and a large 6-car garage for plenty of storage.
Big Hole River:
Perhaps the finest dry fly river in the West, the angling situations on the Big Hole River are diverse and divine. Every conceivable fly angling circumstance and water type associated with river fly fishing for trout are here on this beautiful river. The conditions are dynamic. With five species of game fish, a mixed bag is guaranteed. The Big Hole runs unencumbered for 125 miles from its origins high in the Pintlars, Pioneer and Bitterroot mountains. The river is diverse as it slips through mountain meadows, towering canyons and classic meandering river bottoms to its confluence with the Beaverhead River to form the Jefferson, one of the great rivers to make up the Missouri.
During the course of the summer, the Big Hole changes size in a dramatic
fashion. In an average year, it will peak at 8,000 cubic feet per second in mid spring and drop to 400 cfs by late summer. When the river is big, floating is a must, and one might float as much as 25 miles in a day. As the flows drop the opportunity for wading increases. By late season, one might cover only a mile in a day of fishing. Thus, the methods that are used change.
In addition, the diversity of habitat in an undammed freestone river like the Big Hole provides many types of water to fish. Anglers chase the trout from pocket water to riffles to pools; from shallow water edges to deep runs with undercut banks. One can fish with #2 streamers all the way down to #20 emergers. If there is a style of fly fishing desired, The Complete Fly Fisher has it.
Live Water
The Big Hole River has been called the “The Last Best River.” P
Pond and Spring Creek: The Complete Fly Fisher offers exclusive pond and Spring Creek trips. Working with local ranches we have developed a network of private waters filled with trophy Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout.
Rock Creek River: Imagine a place where time has stood still, and the scenery, fishing and country side is pristine. Where the river flows fast and clear. Where trout are eager to slash at the fly and one might never feel the same. Rock Creek drains the back side of the Anaconda Wilderness and joins the Clark Fork headed to the Pacific. From sometime in mid-May through June every year anglers float this stunning river on a special, limited permit authorized
through the Lolo National Forest. This opportunity is normally from mid may through June. Rock Creek has a wonderful Salmon Fly and Golden Stonefly hatch back to back, and the native Cutthroats, Rainbows and Browns are plentiful and willing. Launches are limited, and early booking is a great idea. This opportunity is provided in cooperation and permitted through and by the Lolo National Forest.

Missouri River:Although the “MO” is a two-hour drive through the Big Sky country and the complete Fly Fisher’s “home water” the guides spend up to a week there for good reason. This is spring-creek-like-river that is loaded with 18-22-inch Brown and Rainbow trout, eager to eat a nymph and thrilling to fool on a small dry fly after a careful stalk. The hatches on the “MO” are legendary beginning the season with the tiny blue-winged olives, followed by pale morning duns along with a blizzard like caddis hatches. For nearly two months, there are Trico spinner falls where trout line up like they are at the buffet line at a Sunday brunch. For the streamer enthusiast, the bugger fishing early and late in the day can be rewarding.
Jefferson River: Dry flies, streamers and the famed “girdle bug” make up the preferred fly selection. Floating through the Tobacco Root Valley is a special treat. Each year many big trout are caught and released by fly fishermen. These fish eat each other. This river has been under the radar for years, but The Complete Fly Fisher has been guiding it for years for the “the big fish”. One should expect an hour to 2 hours’ drive to and from this fishery. The Big Hole, Ruby and the Beaverhead Rivers join together at Twin Bridges to make the “Jeff” a big piece of water with Brown and Rainbow trout to fit.

The Madison River, Upper Madison:
Sixty miles of broken water offer a tremendous population of Brown and
Rainbow trout from 12 to 20 inches. Float fishing is necessary because
fast currents and greasy boulders make wading a bit unsettling. Fishing
dry flies, nymphs, or streamers can be used. Fall finds the Madison
nearly vacant, and the guides personally feel it’s the only time to fish it.
Twenty/fish days are commonplace.
Lower Madison: Wide and invitingly paced, with extensive weed beds and terrific fall
hatches, best describe this 35-mile stretch of water. Summer water
temperatures push trout downstream to the Missouri, but fall’s cooler
weather and water bring brown trout back upstream to feed and spawn.
It’s a beautiful river, and easy to float and fish.

Bitterroot and Clark’s Fork River:
The Bitterroot and Clark Fork river valleys thaw out and offer superlative
dry fly fishing in late March and early April. The bugs (Skwalla) range
in size from #6 to #14. These rivers offer productive dry fly fishing to
big Brown and Rainbow trout. This angling is a well-kept secret. During
the summer months, these two rivers fall into your “A” typical western
stream settings with caddis, PMDS, Trico and hopper hatches. As the
fall months rumble in and water temps drop, mayflies from size #12 to
#20 abound, and the October caddis (size #6 to #10) skitter about for
exciting dry fly fishing.
