The ProductWe have developed icControl, a wireless control system for lighting aimed at the industrial and commercial sectors. Our system gives complete control of lighting, cutting carbon emissions and energy use. Users can create their own lighting and control groups. These groups can be mapped into an existing building layout using the intuitive user interface. This allows the user to easily configure and reconfigure the lighting. For example, a light switch can easily control lights in different parts of the building without the need to run wiring to each part.

The system is totally wireless. There is no need for expensive control wiring to be fitted to the lights and then back to a central control point. Each light/switch uses a small (matchbox sized), inexpensive, control unit. They provide switching and dimming. Many types of sensors and switches can be connected to the control units to provide great flexibility including occupancy detection, daylight harvesting, and day/night scheduling.

All programming is through a simple to use Android app running on a standard tablet. icControl uses a fixed network, meaning that after commissioning there is a predetermined path through the network between any sender and receiver. In contrast, mesh networks formulate paths dynamically and rely on each network node to retransmit each received packet. Our system is more reliable and delivers commands more quickly than mesh networks.

The SystemEach light, switch, PIR or other sensor is connected to a control unit which is in turn connected to the mains. One control unit per light or sensor, one control unit can do both.

The programming bridge unit is used during setup and acts as a translator for the BlueTooth signal from the Android tablet. In the app the user assigns lights and sensors to groups. And assigns controls to groups of lights using a simple graphical interface which is overlaid on top of the actual building! Once the system has been tested, the user saves the configuration and the individual control units will retain their programming (even if there is a power cut).

If at some future time you wish to change how the lights are grouped together or how they are controlled, just switch on the bridge unit and fire up the app to make the changes!
