TERM 4
Welcome to Term 4…this is a busy one with Swimming, Graduation,
Reports, First LEGO League, Community Carols…and the list goes on.
But our priority is always the learning. Did you know that a wide
vocabulary is an indicator of later success in life? I urge you to discuss
words, synonyms in your conversations with the children. Model using
complex words and discuss their meanings and origins as much as you
can. Ask children for other words that might mean the same or similar.
HOMEWORK
I have been asked a few times about homework lately…and while I
know some families do not like the idea, in order for your child to be
the best they can be, the expectation is that ALL children will be
reading every night with AT LEAST 3 minutes of that reading being
done aloud within earshot. Minutes to be read scales up towards
Grades 5/6 where children should be reading 30-50 minutes each
night.
From Grade 3 children should be starting to learn their tables and
ideally children should have these learnt with automaticity by the end
of Grade 4.
Every grade’s teacher allocates tasks each week on Literacy Planet and
Mathletics (which you have already paid for). These are not just games
but are reinforcing the learning being done at school. Indeed, in
discussion about why our Maths results are comparatively better than
other schools in the region and in the state, Mathletics was one of the
factors we have attributed towards that happy fact. In addition families
may wish to log into 25 minutes of free Studyladder time at home.
Over and above this, there are other assigned tasks to extend students,
to consolidate their learning and to support them. I urge you to speak
to your child’s teacher because each child has different needs.
REMEMBER, THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN YOUR CHILD’S
SUCCESS IS YOU. We are always happy to meet with you to tailor your
child’s learning and we encourage children to set goals, to reflect on
their learning and to have a strong voice in all aspects of their learning.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONT.
First LEGO League
We barely have a month to go before the First LEGO League competitions. Students have designed their
robots and are now designing the attachments and programming in order that their robots can run missions
to get points. There are advanced skills of design, programming needed as well as teamwork and
collaboration. The 10 children who have hung in should be proud of their ability to persevere. As we near
the competition, the children will be required more and also have to keep their classroom work up to date.
In addition, with the theme being around Design and Planning, the teams will have to:
Identify a problem with a building or public space in their community.
Design a solution
Share the Solution with others and then
Refine it.
We urge parents of the LEGO team to discuss this prior to us beginning work later this week.
SCHOOL COUNCIL SUPPORTING the DROP OFF/PICK UP ZONE
Thank to families who are enforcing this process. It seems to be running smoothly and we have had no near
misses since the processes began….PHEW!!!!
PARENT CLUB
AGAIN I urge new families to become involved in this SO IMPORTANT part of the school – especially since the
folk who have been flying the flag…and some have been doing that for 10 years and over….are stepping back
as their children move towards secondary school. They will mentor for the next year but then will be gone.
Please discuss this amongst yourselves as we REALLY need a Parent Club as part of a school’s operations.
CAROLS
We met last night with Coldstream Voice and will proceed to take a leading role in the community carols
again this year. It was suggested that families MAY wish to stick around after the carols and make use of
BBQ facilities. In order that we have the equipment set up for you please let us know on the slip attached.
This will again be an alcohol free event to send the correct message to our children who work hard to get
the carols ready with very little time allocated to it.
CALENDAR
Many families have appreciated the calendar with reminders about key events and school routines listed.
However many families ordered and did not collect them last year, so this year payment will need to be
made before we go to print. Ask to look at one if you don’t have one…it has the key dates and events for
2020 and is a great support to families. There is also BOUND to be a photo of your child in it somewhere and
as such also makes a great Christmas gift for family and priced at only $12.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN’S REPORT Hi Coldstream, We hope you had a wonderful holiday and have come back to school all ready to learn. Last Tuesday Taylah Mae, Shane, Katie, Lachlan and I went to Division Athletics where we went if we came first or second in the District Athletics. It was very cold and the rain had made big puddles. There were people trying to clear our run up with a leaf blower and brooms. When we were ready to go the rain stopped. I jumped 1 m 20cm Taylah Mae jumped 1 metre 15cm in high jump. Shane competed in discus. He got 16m and Katie (who also did discus) got 16 m. Lachlan did discus as well and he got 15m. Katie came 3rd and Taylah Mae came 3rd, but only by one knockdown. Thank you for reading our report
Tyler and Taylah Mae
PARENT CLUB NEWS
Term 4 already!
Firstly, I would like to thank those who helped out with our Pie day Lunch. Kylie, Mitchel, Julene and Alison. It was a large task cooking so many pies, sausage rolls and pasties for the whole school but we got there. We had lots of positive feedback from both students and staff and we had many students approach us and thank us for their yummy lunch.
We have our final Special lunch for the year coming up on Thurs 24th Oct - Hot Dogs! Please have your orders in by Tues 22nd.
Our biggest fundraiser for the year is next month. Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. Please remember the date Sunday November 17th! Just an hour or 2 of your time is a huge help.
Thank you all for your ongoing support - Emily

VACATION CARE SURVEY
We are asking all families to please complete this quick 2 minute survey for
our Vacation Care program as to what dates students will need care over the
end of 2019 and the start of 2020. It would be greatly appreciated so that the
OSHC/Vacation Care team can work out what dates to be open and closed
over the Christmas School Holidays.

DIVISION ATHLETICS
Congratulations to the 5 students who not only represented our school, but also the
Wandin District Schools at the Division Athletics at Burwood on Tuesday the 8th October.
Despite the inclement weather our competitors all returned with favourable words about
their achievements and experiences. Tyler jumped 1.20 in his high jump, Taylah Mae
cleared 1.15, placing 3rd, Shane threw 16 metres in discus, Katie threw the discus 16.28
metres achieving a 5th and put the shot 5.69 metres for 3rd. Lachlan threw the discus
about 14 metres. We are very proud of these students and thank them for their excellent
representation of our school.
TENNIS COMPETITIONS During the school holidays, I participated in three tennis tournaments that were being held in Dromana, Frankston and Mornington. I was still able to play in the 10 and under singles, but I decided to play in the 12 and under singles, so I could see what the competition was like. In the first tournament, I made it to the round 16 so as a reward, I received 0.30 points in my Australian Women’s Ranking which went up to 2006. I then played my first consolation match in which I was beaten by the 8th seed, which meant I was knocked out. In the second tournament, I got knocked out in the first round in my main draw and consolation matches in both singles and doubles. In the last tournament, I won my way through to the grand final of the consolation, but unfortunately, I lost in a match tiebreak but I was still really happy because I had won myself a medal. Once I had returned home, I was so exhausted that I just fell fast asleep. - Katie
DIVISIONAL SPORTS Yesterday the 8th of October we did athletics the Second Division, I made it in for discus. The top 2 throws made it into regionals. We all had a practice go and three real throws. In my practice go I did really well, unfortunately it was a practice throw. But then my first actual go wasn't bad I got 15 metres. I thought it was really good, it was good enough for me to be in second place but then the second round happened. Somebody got 19 metres the pressure was on! In my next turn I did really badly and I only got 13 metres! In my last turn, there was so much pressure on me to get second or first place I was really nervous but also really excited I took three swings and I did it. It was a really good throw I got 18 metres, that would have been enough for second place but I got a foul which means I put my foot over a line so it didn't count. Unfortunately I came 5th but despite coming 5th it was an amazing experience and
hopefully I will be lucky enough to go next year. -Shane

THE JUNIOR BROWNLOW
On the first day of holidays I was invited to a formal dinner for the under 12s best and fairest for the league. I was dressed up in a suit and tie with special shoes and pants. It was the first time I had ever wore a suit and it was an amazing night. I came second in the entire league. I received a glass trophy with my name engraved into the base. I play in the Yarra Valley League. Only the top five in each age group in the league got invited to the dinner. The league has two divisions A and B, I play in the B division, the age groups went from under 11 boys to under 18 boys and under 13 to under 16 girls. - Jace
MY CALISTHENICS CV COMPETITION
On the holidays I had a competition. The competition was organised by Calisthenics Victoria and if you win at CV level
you get a medal. The competition was at Karralyka Theatre and the stage was excellent. We did all of our
items well. It was really fun! At the end of CV we get to go on stage to hear the results! When we were sitting on the
stage we heard that in aesthetics we came 1st, for revue we got 2nd and reserve aggregate and aggregate (2nd and
1st) Our team Heathergene came 1st! We were thrilled. My team and I went to the edge of the stage and received our
medals. After we went to McDonalds to celebrate.

FOREST LODGE CAMP
At Forest Lodge Farm Camp we had a night walk. We didn’t see any animals except for some calves. I was walking next to Mackenzie. At one time there were heaps of puddles. I nearly fell into one because Mackenzie nearly pushed me in it. When we saw the cattle John had to call his neighbour to collect them. Then we had to go on another walking track instead. It was very cold so most people had beanies and jumpers on. It was also very dark so everybody their torches.
The Disco On the Wednesday night we had Red Faces, it was really good. We held the disco on Thursday night after playing the chocolate game. We had to get changed and then it started. When we had the disco people that danced well got lollies and I got one. There were heaps of songs and it was really fun. Then it was time for bed. -Kaiyah
The Disco On camp we had a disco on Thursday. We played the chocolate game it was really fun. If you’re wondering what the chocolate game is, it's a game where you have a die and if you roll a six you go in the middle of the circle and dress yourself with little costumes and start cutting chocolate. Meanwhile everyone else is trying to roll a six to get the chocolate. The actual disco started, it was fun but I was a little tired. We listened to lots of music like The Git Up, Y M C A and Quire and a lot of other songs.
The Night Walk On Tuesday we did the night walk. We saw half a herd of cows that escaped from their paddock. The camp owner John rang the farmer. But we had to go the other way. We ended up doing a loop and came back to camp through the bush.

9 The Connection
My favourite activity on camp was the giant swing.
It was 20 metres and I went about 10 metres. It was SUPER fun!
I was really nervous at first but Michael convinced me to go. On my second go I wasn’t at all nervous at all. The best thing about camp was how many activities there were. We were always busy on zip lines or jumping on the hay bales. On the hay bales we played games like tiggy and musical statues. After a while Mrs Morrow and Mrs Thurgood jumped on the hay bales with us.
Mrs Thurgood was really scared but eventually got to the end. If we weren’t outside or finishing our activity books we were eating the delicious food the chefs made for us.
My favourite dinners were the fish and chips and roast beef with wedges.
- Darby
Forest lodge farm camp was one of the best camps I've ever been on. My favourite activity was the flying fox. At the start, it was scary but when you were going down it was really fun. We got two turns.
I had two best parts about camp. A: The food was delicious B: Wilsons promontory was so
cool. We went to squeaky beach. The sand was actually squeaky. We had a sand castle
competition. I didn’t win but it was still fun. I will miss forest lodge camp but it will be in a
place in my heart. -Taj
