Weekly Torah Portions for February

Week ending February 4, 2012 Parashat B’shalach Exodus 13:17-17:16 Pharaoh finally releases the Hebrews from Egypt, only to change hismind again and chase after them with a force of 600 chariots. Godparts the waters at the Sea of Reeds, and the Hebrews are freed fromslavery once and for all. The Egyptians who are pursuing them aredrowned as the Sea once again closes. The liberated Israelite slavescelebrate when they are safe on the other side and are led by Moses’sister Miriam in singing and dancing.

Week ending February 11, 2012 Parashat Yitro Exodus 18:1-20:23 Jethro (Yitro), Moses’ father-in-law, observes the toll that Moses’leadership of the Hebrews is taking and advises Moses to delegatesome of the responsibility and authority. After several weeks of wan-dering, the people find themselves at the base of Mount Sinai, whereGod gives Moses the Ten Commandments.

Week ending February 18, 2012 Parashat Mishpatim Exodus 21:1-24:18 This parasha continues the Torah’s presentation of DivineLegislation. The word mishpatim means “case laws” and many suchrules - encompassing civil, criminal, and cultic regulations - are enu-merated in these chapters. The parashah concludes with a covenantceremony on Mount Sinai.

Week ending February 25, 2012 Parashat Teruma Exodus 25:1-27:19Parashat Teruma describes the construction of the Tabernacle. Godgives meticulously detailed instructions regarding the design andelements of the Tabernacle, especially the Holy Ark. Raise the RoofIt feels like it was meant to be. I amnot one to use the word “bashert”, butthis feels meant to be, intended, bash-ert. On Yom Kippur, when Tom and Ispoke to the vision of a re-imaginedsanctuary, Maura Smolover was sittingin the congregation. Maura, her siblings,their spouses and children were at HighHoliday services, as they have been forall the years of their lives. The patriarchof the family, Cantor Ray Smolover, wasleading the community in prayer. Maurais a glass and metal artist and sculptor,and as we spoke, unbeknown to us,Maura began to sketch.

Months later, as the Design Committeereached out for additional names ofartists for the design of a new ark andeternal light, Maura’s name was amongthose that were suggested. She, of

course, had been thinking about this formonths, and who knows, maybe years.Yes, her designs and ideas spoke to theheart of the committee and her ideashave redefined the conversation aboutsacred space. Maura is a link to our past;her life’s story is connected to this sanc-tuary which she has loved and whichhas been her spiritual home. She is alsoa link to our future; she is a world-renowned artist and a creative and imag-inative thinker.

This is what I want to tell you: I want totell you that we will someday (soon, Ihope) have a sanctuary that will take ourbreath away. The experience of being inthe sanctuary, of entering the ark, willbring us closer to the encounter withLight and Grace and Divine Presencethan we might have dared imagine.

And when you enterthis sanctuary, youwill want to say, “Ihad a part in this.”You will want to say,“I helped make thishappen.”

No contribution is insignificant. Nocontribution is too small or too large.Maura Smolover will be teaching onShabbat morning, February 25th, in theSchulman Chapel in the Woods. ThatTorah portion that week recounts theimagining of our people’s first sanctuaryin the desert. That sanctuary was builtby everyone “whose heart so movedthem.” So will ours be. Let your heart bea part of it.

There is a story told byRabbi Nachman of

Bratislav, a 17th centuryHasidic master: A group ofpeople who have been to awedding are on their wayhome. One says, “It was abeautiful wedding. I liked

the food.” Another says, “It was a great wedding.The music was marvelous.” Still another says, “Itwas the best wedding I ever went to. I saw all mygood friends there and we had a terrific time.”

Rabbi Nachman, who overheard them says,“These people were not really at a wedding.”

Then another guest joins the group and says,“Baruch adonai. Blessed is God’s name. ThankGod those two got together.”

At that, Rabbi Nachman says, “Now THAT per-son was at a Jewish wedding.”

At the heart of any wedding is the hope that twopeople can find their intended with whom theywill spend the rest of their lives. In this day andage, the matchmaker could be a friend, pullingup the right stool at the right bar, or, as is oftenthe case, a virtual cupid who pairs couplesthrough various online dating sites.

In looking back at the last 20 couples that I havemarried, 19 of them have met through an onlinedating site. If only Rabbi Nachman of Bratislavknew what an impact the internet had on bring-ing people together!!

In her book The New Jewish Wedding, AnitaDiamant summarizes the codified Jewish obliga-

tion in these words: “A kosher Jewish weddingcan be summed up in a few words: the brideaccepts an object worth more than a dime fromthe groom, the groom recites a ritual formula ofacquisition and concentration and these twoactions must be witnessed.” That constitutes aJewish wedding. The rest of the traditions associ-ated with Jewish weddings-- the canopy, theseven blessings, the breaking of the glass, eventhe presence of rabbi or cantor—are customs.

One of the reasons I love officiating at weddingsis because these customs can be expanded toinclude a full breadth of modern day interpreta-tions. The liturgy that must be recited for a wed-ding to be “kosher” consists of only a few hun-dred words, so the rest is open to creative inter-pretation. In the Liberal Jewish world, a couplemay choose to expand the traditional ketubah toinclude words that are specific to a particular cou-ple, penned by a bride and groom. A modernwedding may include a Kiddush cup made by afamily member. It may happen under a tallitpainted or woven by a friend. It may be ordainedby the voice of a loved one or the musical com-position of a dear friend.

At the heart of the wedding ceremony is theexchange of rings: the groom giving and thebride’s accepting of a ring is a central act ofkedushin. With the ring, the groom accomplisheskinyan and “acquires” the bride. In modernity,many choose to do a double ring ceremony, aclear statement that one partner is not acquiringthe other but rather that the couple enters into ashared union for the rest of their lives. The phrasethat formally marries a couple reads as follows:“By this ring, you are consecrated to me (as mywife/husband) in accordance with the traditions

of Moses and Israel.” This formula in Hebrew isreferred to as haray aht and it contains 32 letters.In Hebrew, each letter coincides with a number:aleph is 1; bet is 2; gimel is 3 and so on. Lamedand bet together indicate the number 32. In thisformula, it turns out that, whether by accident orby divine intention, there are exactly 32 letters.How profoundly beautiful this is--32 spelled bylamed bet is the word lev: heart. The interpretationof this wonderful coincidence is that couplesrecite these words with a heart overflowing withjoy and love.

The ring ceremony is only one example of a ritu-al that has modern interpretations. There aremany others and when I meet with wedding cou-ples we explore all these rituals together. It is myhope that the couple will be learned enough tomake their decisions on which rituals, ancientand modern, are meaningful to them. Often theychoose a blend of the ancient and the modern.

The musical traditions of the wedding have alsoevolved and lend themselves to modern compo-sitions. Though many of our prayers have beenchanted to traditional motifs, our modern dayJewish composers have set these prayers tomelodies within multitudes of musical genres.

At the core of our daily obligations is our obliga-tion to celebrate with bride and groom. It is myhope that, as we turn the corner from winter tospring, many of us will find ourselves celebratingthe perpetuation of the next generation of thosewho love each other fully. For all of those cele-brating weddings this year, I wish you Mazal Tovand I wish you complete enjoyment and fulfill-ment under the chupah and beyond.

Ritual Riches — Weddings

February… the cold, dark,SHORT month! Even so,

there is lots of activity in ourschool. Grade level book clubdiscussions have begun andFamily Shabbats are well underway. Join us as we welcome inthe Shabbat of Inclusion with

our Yad B’Yad students at services on Friday,February 3rd. Our 4th graders will shareHavdallah with their families at their HavdallahHispanica, a celebration of the history, music anddance of the Jews of Spain. Our 6th Graders willlead a Shabbat morning service with their familiesas they continue their journey toward becomingBar and Bat Mitzvah.

Every year when Passover seems ages away, ourstudents work to raise money for the ReligiousSchool with the annual Passover Candy Sale.Please help your child to support our school by

Our 7th graders have begun their secondtrimester of a new choice-based model called“Mesorah—Choosing Your Commit ment”. Theyare taking classes that range from Jewish Humorand The Drama of Tanach to Yoga and Ethics andWilderness Jews. Some of our 7th grade familiesare participating in Jewish Ritual at home and areforming chevruta (groups of learners) to celebrateShabbat together in people’s homes. Students aredelving into their personal relationships with Godand exploring theology while creating projectsbased on these discussions. The goal is to createa broad range of choices through which our stu-dents can find their personal Jewish connections.

Jewish learning doesn’t only happen in the class-room and it definitively doesn’t end with becom-ing Bar/Bat Mitzvah. As a community, we contin-ue to explore ways to engage in Jewish life andJewish learning and create new and long lastingconnections.

In a little over a month, we’ll celebrate Purimtogether. Don’t miss the Purim Carnival andPurim Shpeil on Wednesday, March 7th. We’vealready begun planning and our youth-runCarnival promises to be better than ever. Markyour calendar!

The Kol Ami Inclusion Committee hasbeen hard at work. The Chairpersons

Rachel Feld-Glazman, Donna Klein andGene Kava have gotten a wonderful group ofpeople (Ray Bello, Bonnie Hagen, MindyErber, & Lynne Dolle) together to assist withthe goal of expanding awareness, maximiz-ing accessibility and improving our inclusionof any and all congregants. As a Jewish com-munity, we have an obligation for inclusion--“for my house shall be a house of prayer forALL people” -Isaiah 56:5. We would like toensure that everyone feels included and isactually able to be a fully participating mem-ber of our community. Whether young orolder, in the ECP, Religious School, AdultEducation programs and/or during worship,we would be happy to speak with any indi-vidual who has suggestions and/or needsassistance.

Last year we focused on information gather-ing. Our goal was to find out what is current-ly being done in our community related toinclusion and for our special needs popula-tion. We met with all the staff and also gath-ered suggestions from our community mem-bers by sending out a survey. To keep thisprocess going and to raise awareness aboutthe Inclusion Committee, we have addedour contact information to the Connection,Kol Ami weekly email and the weekly orderof service to assist people with contacting uswith any concerns or suggestions.

So...what are some of the other things wehave accomplished so far?

• Ray Bello, who has expertise in architec-tural planning, has met with and provideda written report to the building commit-tee/architect about our new constructionplans. With our new construction, wewill be able to accommodate wheelchairson the bima and include those with anyambulation device in our services.

• Ray donated a portable ramp that can beused in our current sanctuary to accessthe bima until the renovations are com-pleted (we just need advanced noticed toset it up).

• The Senior Youth Group has been organ-ized to provide a "door holders" programfor Shabbat Services to assist people withgetting in and out of the building.

• Ray also donated large umbrellas to beused by anyone as they get to their car.They are kept by the main entrance.

• A sign was placed at the entrance to thesanctuary that tells people about our hear-ing devices, umbrellas and ramp andencourages them to ask the usher forassistance.

• Gene Kava attended a workshop at theURJ Biennial entitled " A Ramp is NotEnough," concerning inclusion of thosewith special needs.

• The committee has applied and hopes toapply for more grants to get funding to beused for Inclusion programming.

• The ECP purchased additional books and

toys that help to educate the childrenabout those with special needs.

February is Jewish Disability AwarenessMonth. We are working on implementingsome programming for various groups in ourcommunity. Programming about under-standing children with disabilities will bepresented in the ECP. A discussion andpanel for questions and answers will be ledby teens with special needs to present theirexperiences to the teens in our religiousschool. In addition, during February emer-gency packets will be distributed at Shabbatservices to assist with preparedness in anyemergency. We have been contacting com-munity resources such as the WestchesterDisability Office to raise our awareness ofprograms that are available within our com-munity. We hope to be able to share someof this information for the upcoming year’sMitzvah projects. We hope that JewishDisability Awareness Month will increase ourcommunity’s awareness about Inclusionduring the month of February. We alsohope to keep this intense focus moving for-ward throughout the entire year.

and the mortgage related to such debt and (ii) obtaining construction financing secured by a mortgage for the sanctuary and parking lot (L’Dor Va’Dor) project.

There will be an informational session on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm. The purpose ofthis informational session is to enable Congregants to ask questions and develop an understanding of the

two proposals that will be presented at the Special Meeting.

As the New Yearbegins, we are

pleased and proudto look back at2011 and reflectupon the excite-ment and accom-

plishments our Congregation has enjoyed.None of this would have been possible with-out Kol Ami's committed congregants, inspi-rational clergy and dedicated staff. It hasbeen another amazing year for us to serve asyour co-presidents. We remain grateful forthis honor.

I. Capital Campaign – Led byAndrea Seiden, Janet Hershey anda committed Committee of over 30strong, we have raised approxi-mately $3.4 million (and growing)from over 120 congregants. Our"L’Dor Va’Dor" campaign will makeour worship space beautiful andwell suited for the 21st centuryworship practices. We are alsoimproving our grounds with anenhanced traffic pattern, drainage,site lighting, and beautifying land-scape architecture.

II. Building Committee – OurBuilding Committee, consisting ofarchitects, builders, real estate fin-anciers, accountants, attorneys,and committed congregants, hasbeen working hard and meetingregularly throughout 2011. TheCommittee went through a com-prehensive architectural selectionprocess and design competition.The Committee has also selectedand retained a construction man-ager and other relevant consult-ants. The preliminary designswere displayed to theCongregation both in the Springand during the High Holy Days.We fully expect that our workenhancing the new sanctuary andbeautifying the grounds will becompleted during 2012, in timefor 2012 High Holiday services.

III. Leadership Development – Wedeveloped a new LeadershipDevelopment Program, conceivedand led by Hank Rouda and Dave

Lorden. The program was rolledout in 2011 and over 25 congre-gants participated.

IV. Inclusion Committee – TheInclusion Committee has studiedour existing facilities and made rec-ommendations to our design archi-tect for making the temple moreaccessible to all congregants andguests.

V. Cantor Mo – We negotiated a newcontract with Cantor Mo Glazman.

VI. Credit Card Usage – We imple-mented a new credit card policyallowing the congregants to usecredit cards to pay for all Templeactivities and programs.

VII. Operating Budget – We devel-oped and delivered another sur-plus budget under the strong andable leadership of our Treasurer,Margie Lewis. Margie has delivereda surplus budget for each andevery year during her tenure asTemple Treasurer.

VIII. Community Organizing – Wecontinue to develop and refine ourcommunity organizing initiativeworking side by side with otherfaith-based institutions inWestchester County.

IX. Restructuring Men's Council --Re-branding as "KABRO" - Thenewly revitalized Brotherhood hasdeveloped lots of activities for guysof all ages, including activities fordads, kids and the entire family.KABRO continues to develop newand fun activities under the leader-ship of Michael Berg and ScottPollak.

X. Re-energizing Junior YouthGroup – Last year, we hired TimnaBurston to focus on our SeniorYouth Group. This year, weengaged Rabbi Nadia Gold, who isrevitalizing our Junior YouthProgram. We intend to continueto expand our youth initiatives in2012 and beyond.

XI. Committee Term Limits andSuccession Planning – The Board

began a dialogue regarding com-mittee and succession planning tocontinue to develop trained andcapable future Temple leaders.

XII. Personnel Committee – Led byPat Grossman and Hank Rouda,this committee is developing jobdescriptions, performance reviewprotocols, and other means ofobjectively evaluating and consis-tently improving the service of ourprofessional staff.

XIII. Capital Budget – Margie Lewishas formed a Finance Com mitteeto, among other things, develop acapital budget so we can betterplan for our inevitable capitalneeds.

XIV. Milgrom/Elcott Gala – Throughthe meticulous planning of ourGala Committee, including(among others) Stephanie Falk,Lori Abrams, Lisa Feldman, LauriCarey, Jill Abraham and LisaBorowitz, we planned and pulledoff a wonderful Gala Weekend.There were three amazing eventsand an opportunity for all to partic-ipate in the celebration.Importantly, the Gala and Journalraised over $200,000 towards ouroperating budget.

XV. Membership Brainstorming – Asteering committee was convenedby Membership and DevelopmentDirector Janet Hershey, after aBoard brainstorming session, todevelop, refine and implementstrategies to grow our member-ship. Continued membershipgrowth will result in an even morevibrant community as well as helphold down future dues.

XVI. Committee Restructuring TaskForce – Under the leadership of thepast Temple President Lisa Borowitz,a task force was assembled to re-imagine and make recommenda-tions with respect to our long exist-ing committee structure. This willinclude adding committees, elimi-nating committees and consolidat-ing committees to break down silosand create greater synergies.

XVII. Drama Club – The Board began toconsider how to reinvigorate ourdrama club.

XVIII. Community Time Bank – JudySarch is leading the charge todevelop a new program wherebycongregants make deposits of theirtime in various areas of expertiseand are able to make commensu-rate withdrawals of the time of oth-ers who have made deposits intoour time bank. We will have moreto say on this topic as the TimeBank becomes ready to roll out.

XIX. Committee Overview Presenta -tions – During monthly meetings,the Board has had the benefit ofpresentations as to the roles, func-tions and jurisdiction of variouscommittees. Our clearer under-standing of existing committeeswill aid in creating strategicalliances among our committedcongregants.

XX. Annual Fund – Under the strongleadership of Daryl Moss, ourAnnual Fund generated over$140,000 towards our operatingbudget.

XXI. Dues Review Philosophy andImplementation – Our Board andExecutive Committee studied ourDues Review process to assure it isadministered consistently andeven-handedly to all congregantsin need of dues assistance.

XXII. Temple Policy and ProcedureManual – Our secretary Jess

Lorden has undertaken an exten-sive review and development of acomprehensive written Policy andProcedure Manual whereby resolu-tions of our Board will be memori-alized, recorded and updated asnew resolutions are enacted.

XXIII. Shabbat Across Kol Ami –Planned for March 2, 2012 andchaired by Wendy Zimmerman,this should be a wonderful com-munity building event startingwith a special Shabbat service andthen spreading out among manyhomes whereby congregants andothers will enjoy a Shabbat meal ina relaxed setting and get to knoweach other a bit better.

XXIV. Spring Fundraiser – "Life is aCabernet" – Cantor Mo and twoother Cantors will be performing awide array of music with fine wineslive music, great food and aperitif.It is sure to be a night to rememberand the benefits will go to theTemple's operating budget.

XXV. Replaced Aged Boiler in the JaffinActivity Center

And that’s just what we’re learning everydayin the ECP! February especially is filled withwonderful opportunities in the ECP to shareour love.

Beginning on February 1st and extendingthroughout the entire month, our familieswill have the opportunity to donate newitems for infants and toddlers including bot-tles, formula, baby food, and clothing. Ourcollection will be donated to theWestchester Coalition for the Hungry andHomeless at the end of the month. If youwould like to partner with us, please drop offany of these much-needed items in the cra-dle outside the ECP office anytime duringthe month.

On Thursday, February 2nd , 3’s, 4’s, andPre-K’s will participate in a Book Swap.Each child brings in 2 books to share. Theycan pick one from the selection to keep andthe rest of the books are donated to the shel-ters in our area.

On Wednesday, February 8th we will be cel-ebrating Tu B’Shevat, the New Year of theTrees. Tu B’Shevat dates back to the Talmud.The Rabbis considered the new year of thetrees as beginning when the new fruit beginsto form. Although winter is still very muchupon us here, spring has already begun inIsrael. In the ECP, we have a wonderful dayof workshops planned to celebrate the holi-day including making birdhouses, designingyour very own Tu B’shevat Seder plate, learn-ing about recycling, and planting parsley.The morning culminates with a deliciousfruit Seder.

Wednesday, February 15th the nurseryschool will be sponsoring our annual Sharethe Love Mitzvah Bake Sale. The Bake Salewill take place in our Auditorium from 9:00-9:45 am and the entire Kol Ami communityis invited and encouraged to join us for cof-fee and treats. The monies earned from thisevent are used for our Mitzvah MorningProject to be held at the end of May with thepreschool children from The Early LearningCenter of New Rochelle.

Last year we invited the Early LearningCenter’s 3 and 4 year olds to come and play

with us. Each of the chil-dren who came to visitreceived a new book, madea new friend, and enjoyed adelicious ice cream treat.We were also able to buythe Center two new tri -cycles for their playground. It was a wonder-ful morning for everyone and we look for-ward to the children’s visit again this year.

This year again we will begin our Share theLovemonth with our 3’s, 4’s and Pre-K chil-dren making knotted lap blankets for ourfriends at The Osborn in Rye. At the end ofthe month our 4’s and Pre-K’s will make avisit to The Osborn with Rabbi Shira todeliver the blankets, sing some songs andbring lots of smiles.

ROBIN DAVIES-SMALL AND ADAM, PARKERAND BRENNEN SMALL

Adam and Robin have been temple members fora year and a half, having moved to Hartsdale fromAshland, Massachusetts, to be closer to Robin'sfamily. Robin grew up in Port Jefferson Station onLong Island while Adam was raised in Peabody,Massachusetts. They have two sons, 6 year oldParker who is in kindergarten in Ardsley and 4year old Brennen who is in our ECP program.Parker was in the ECP program last year and onemight say Robin is “in” the ECP program as well.She is a class parent, co-organized the recentbook fair and last year’s ECP yearbook, and vol-unteered at the Hanukkah party and many otherschool activities.

Robin, can you tell us more about your ECPinvolvement? “When we initially moved to Westchester we didnot know anyone. ECP took us in. Parker andBrennen started school shortly after we moved.The teachers and Nan were very welcoming andhelped the boys meet other children and makefriends and Adam and I were able to meet otherparents and make friends as well. Volunteeringand getting involved was a great way to meetmore people and in doing so we made some greatfriends. We have only known these ‘new friends’for a little over a year but in some ways it is hardto remember not knowing them.

“We try to attend all of the activities that ECPoffers. Since Parker is in kindergarten, this is away for him to maintain his connection with KolAmi. As a family we also participate in the manyECP tzedakot projects like Turkey Trot, DonatingPajamas and making sandwiches for the home-less. All of these reinforce the Jewish ideal ofdoing mitzvot.”

Why did you join Kol Ami? “That's also ECP related. We found Kol Ami byaccident or fate. After visiting Westchester to lookfor a house, we stopped at a restaurant inConnecticut on our way back to Massachusettsand met Cheryl Bernstein, a 2's teacher in ECP,and her family on their way back home toWestchester from Massachusetts. Cheryl told usabout Kol Ami and its ECP program as well asother Westchester programs. We scheduled atour of the ECP program and immediately knewthis was the school for Parker and Brennen.”

After enrolling in the school the family joined thetemple. Robin was not part of a temple growingup and Adam was raised in a very traditionalJewish home. He attended private Jewish schoolfor many years. The spiritual part of Judaism isimportant to them. This became even moreprevalent recently when Adam's mother passedaway this fall. “The temple and school were therefor us when we needed them most. Rabbi Tomcame to our home during shiva and it was com-forting to have him and see how warmly he inter-acted with Parker and Brennen. Kol Ami hasbecome such an important part of our lives.”

More about Robin and AdamAdam attended Salem State College businessmanagement program and works as an OracleBusiness Analyst for the Bank of Tokyo. Robin hasa Masters degree in Educational Administrationwith a specialization in Non-Profit Agencies.While in Massachusetts she was the ChiefOperating Officer for Greater WalthamAssociation for Retarded Citizens. She presentlyoperates DS Consulting, a consulting firm thatassists with the growth, strategic planning anddevelopment of profit and non-profit companies.They can be reached at [email protected] is a dedicated runner, running the BostonMarathon and the Rhode Island Marathon. Shehas completed countless half marathons and 3Sprint Triathlons.

What advice can you give to newer congregants? “Get involved. Meet people. Become a part of thecommunity. It has been and continues to be veryrewarding and beneficial to our children and ourfamily as a whole.”

Jim and Margery are 30+ year members of KolAmi living in Scarsdale. They have three children--Andy, 38; Doug, 36; and Karen, 30, all of whomare married. Andy is a molecular biologist, split-ting his time between Minneapolis and SanFrancisco. Doug is a builder living in Cambridge,Massachusetts. Karen lives on the Upper WestSide and is a school social worker in the Bronx.Jim is from Shaker Heights, Ohio, and graduatedfrom Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Margie

grew up in St. Louis and graduated from CaseWestern Reserve University. They met on a blinddate in Cleveland.

Jim is a textile executive and the owner of JamesYarn Sales Company. Margie is busy with commu-nity volunteering, working with Let’s Get Ready,an SAT preparatory service for disadvantagedboys and girls; serving on the board (and a pastpresident) of Surprise Lake Camp; and serving asa consultant for Seeds of Peace.

What is Seeds of Peace? Tell us more. “Seeds of Peace is a camp in Maine that bringstogether Arab and Israeli teenagers for a three anda half week summer living experience. There aremany activities where teams are chosen withoutany reference to background. They all wear thesame color t-shirts. There are also conflict resolu-tion meetings every day as well as all sports andarts activities. Teens first come together as neigh-bors living in tense relationships and leave asfriends.

“We have a home two miles from the Seeds ofPeace camp. Our place was the summer campthat Jim attended as a child and is now our fami-ly center. We spend our summers and many vaca-tions there. It is a ‘spiritual place’ for us. We metour Seeds of Peace neighbors and have gotteninvolved in many ways. We help integrate thecamp and adult chaperones in the local commu-nity, serve as a volunteer consultant, and invitecounselors and chaperones to spend time at ourhome.”

Margery, tell us about your involvement at KolAmi. “Both of us have been on the WorshipCommittee. I have served as chairperson of boththat committee and the Social Action Committee.I was also on the Board of Trustees for manyyears. Both of us grew up in large reform congre-gations and, from our first days at Kol Ami, wewanted to contribute. And we both plan to con-tinue to stay involved contributing to the wellbeing of our synagogue community.”

What do you think sets Kol Ami apart from otherplaces? “To begin with, our very special clergy. Also, KolAmi continues to be welcoming and vibrant withnew members and new activities. We love theSynaplex programs. Our congregation’s commit-ment to social action is very important to us. Ourmembers need to be made aware of efforts suchas our special needs program.”

What advice can you give to new and prospectivemembers?“You don’t have to get involved, but gettinginvolved is satisfying and fun. We have a greatEarly Childhood Program and a great ReligiousSchool. These services, along with adult educa-tion and activities, are great reasons to join andsupport the temple as members.”

MEN’S COUNCIL/KOL AMI BROTHERHOOD (KABRO) This year has seen major changes at the Men’s Council, now known as theKol Ami Brotherhood (KABRO). In our first six months, the new leadershipteam has organized several activities to serve the children of Kol Ami and thebroader temple community. These included an overnight camping trip lastJuly, a back-to-school picnic in September, and a candle-lighting celebrationon the first night of Hanukah (details below).

We are planning several more events in the months ahead. Some, like thecommunal seder held at Kol Ami on the second night of Passover (April 7,2012), are longstanding Men’s Council traditions. Others, like a family after-noon of ice skating we’re planning this winter and a dance on the night ofMay 19, are brand-new ideas. The dance is not a fund-raiser – just a chanceto have fun with spouses, significant others, and friends in the community.We’re planning a pot-luck dessert table to accompany live music by the bandKick Start Charlie. We welcome ideas and leadership from long-time Men’s Council membersas well as from those who have joined KABRO within the past year. We alsoencourage other members of the congregation to get involved and share theirideas with us. We usually meet in a relaxed setting on the first Mondayevening of each month, with only an informal agenda and lots of time tosocialize. Our goals are to foster camaraderie and friendship among the menof the Kol Ami community and to serve the temple through our programsand activities.

As examples of our dual mission – having fun and serving the community –KABRO sponsored two events within a week of each other in December.Both exceeded all expectations. First, we held a pot-luck dinner after Fridaynight services on December 16. This was a purely social event for KABROmembers and their families, and it was a great chance to get to know eachother better. Children enjoyed the Three Stooges and the Pink Panther in theauditorium while the “grownups” talked into the evening. It was a real DIY(do it yourself) event – from the amazing variety of homemade food to thecleanup (KABRO members scrubbing pots in the kitchen).

Next, on December 20, KABRO officers Jonathan Klein and Anthony Zitrinorganized a Family Hanukah Party. More than 50 children and their parents,grandparents, and caretakers participated. Food was plentiful and includedtasty latkes, doughnuts and candy. The children enjoyed a dreidel spinningcontest and Hanukah arts and crafts and music. Rabbi Shira and Rabbi Tomwere in attendance, and Cantor Mo played guitar and sang songs before lead-ing the candle-lighting prayers. It was a joyous start to the holiday.
