A Tribute to an Inspirational Man

Summer 2016 holds so many special memories for our PCH family. There was the cookout at City Lake Park, July 4th fireworks in the courtyard, ice cream and watermelon socials, and the pool party. However, it was also a memorably sad time. PCH said our goodbyes to our

beloved Managing Consultant, Donald Sams. Having battled cancer for a considerable length of time, Don went Home to Heaven on July 25, 2016.

On a personal note, I felt so fortunate and privileged to have had Don as my boss for my 12

years at PCH. He inspired and empowered me on my journey. He was blessed with outstanding qualities of a deep faith, dedication to God and pastoral ministry, and leadership.

His many accomplishments were not just projects, they were ministries which he fulfilled. His Obituary is a testament to his life’s hard work which amazed some folks to comment “he did so many wonderful things throughout his life”. We at PCH experienced his fortitude and love of hard work. In his wisdom, his mind was forever looking forward to ensure that PCH

honored the founding vision of 51 years. He challenged us constantly to ask, “What do residents need and how can we best minister to them?” We will remember Don for his

genuine spirit, his sense of fairness, encouragement, support, and love. You always knew he had your back. We truly believe that Don’s legacy of ministry will live on.

What a great name for a song! What a great verse to remember! “. . . great is your faithfulness.”

In Lamentations 3:23b, Jeremiah wrote those words while experiencing a very

difficult time of his life. During a time of loss, broken fellowship, and trouble, his first response was to praise God for His

faithfulness. Don Sams, our managing director who

went to be with the Lord in July, was much like Jeremiah. Regardless of the

circumstances, he encouraged me to remain faithful just as God is faithful!

If Don were here, he would continue to proclaim God as sovereign and worthy of

praise for His continued Faithfulness.

God is faithful and will make all things new again. Don is new again in his home

in heaven! Praise God! Just as Don encouraged me, I in turn encourage you, that NO matter the curve balls you are

thrown, the brokenness you feel, or sense of being overwhelmed with your life, our God is Faithful. God will see you through just as He did Jeremiah and just as He did

Don Sams’ from 1939-2016! Remain faithful as our God is faithful.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness Residents’ Memories of Don Sams

Mr. Sams was a man of distinction. His warmth and personality showed him to be an honest and caring man who made sure that all PCH residents were provided for in a Christian, comfortable, and healthy way. Even though we were close in age, sharing the same birthday, January 6th,

he was several years younger. It was comforting to us that his oversight of our community and our well-being was in capable hands. He will be missed, but we are reassured that his son, Mark, will

continue the ministry set forth by his father.

I’ve met a lot of ministers in my 79 years of life. Don Sams was one of them. He was a Christian man, he was a man of God. In the five years I have been a

resident at PCH, I found that he always treated people with respect. He was a gentleman, a child of the King, and a

God-sent man.

(One of our continuing resident stories.)

Let me introduce myself. I am Varon Timothy Eldridge, but go by VT. I was raised in the High Point area from the age of 4. I went to Oakview Elementary

School and Oakview Methodist Church. My first job was a bag boy at age 13 for the Big Bear Super Market on N. Main Street in High Point. My last two years

of High School I worked second shift at Burlington Industries in Thomasville, NC.

After graduation from High Point High School (now Central High School), I

joined the US Air Force and went to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas for basic training. The Air Force then sent me to Trade School in

Denver, Colorado as a weapons specialist. They then transferred me to Myrtle Beach, SC Air Force Base in 1957. I remained there until I was discharged in

June 1960.

After serving 4 years in the US Air Force, I moved back to the High Point area and worked for Fisher Radio and Stereo on S. Main Street. This job led me to work in Greensboro for Johnson Temperature Controls as a draftsman for a year

and a half. A new opportunity came in Charlotte, NC with Horne Wilson Plumbing Supplies in the warehouse. The relocation to Charlotte was a step towards my work at the city of Charlotte in the Water & Sewer engineering

department drawing city maps. I completed plans for a 42-inch raw water line from the Catawba River to the pumping and treatments station. Transferring 25 or 30 pages of large 24 x 36 drawings to scale was a big part of this job. I dis-patched the radio to trouble shoot water main breaks while working with the city. In 1962, I joined the Charlotte Fire Department where I remained for the next 23 years. I retired from the Fire Department in January 1988 on my 50th

Birthday.

After retirement, I started remodeling houses, rebuilding cars form the salvage car bidding process, and collecting music records and tapes. In 2013, my health started to decline, along with high blood pressure issues, I felt the need for addi-

tional help which led me to Piedmont Christian Home. Memory Lane at PCH was my home for about 8 months, but due to the good care I regained strength. I have relocated to the Garden Way Hall. I have enjoyed by time at PCH and am

being well care for here.

Featured Volunteer: Thom and Debby Gill

Thom Gill began singing and sharing God’s Word through music in 2000 when the Lord gave him the gift of singing. He had never sung before and was very shy. He cannot read music, therefore, to learn a song he

listens to it, writing down the guitar chords and then practices it over and over. He only gives his best to the Lord in return for his wonderful Gift!

In 2007, when his mother-in-law was a patient at Beacon Place in

Greensboro, Thom would bring his guitar and sing to his wife and her mother. Other patients began asking if Thom would come to their room

as well. Thus, his Hospice Ministry was born. Once the Hospice Home in High Point was built, Thom volunteered and continued to bring comfort to the patients and their love ones through singing and playing his easily

recognized Michael Kelly Guitar.

His wife of 46 years, Debby, began to work with Thom. Her gift as an encourager and prayer warrior seemed to fit well with long-term care

ministries. The Lord has led them to many such communities. Piedmont Christian Home has become one of their monthly ministries. The bless-

ings they have received have been abundant. While Thom still volunteers at Hospice Home, he and his wife, Debby, have enjoyed being able to work together as a ministry team since their retirement. They both say,

“To God be the Glory.”

Summer Events

High Point Museum introduced a special exhibit of Luther’s Craft Instrument Making of the Blue Ridge. Residents got to pluck on a banjo. The exhibit was a “hit” for all music

lovers.

The Annual Pool Party was a lot of fun for “kids of all ages”. Lemonade, sugar wafers, and chips just seem to taste better when

enjoyed with friends and good music. If you will look closely, Joseph Farabee our Activities Director, is being dunked to the

delight of all.

Pet Therapy is anticipated by all resident pet lovers. Several dogs come to see us and we love to touch them and remember our own

pets from long ago.

A leisurely tour and snack picnic at Piedmont Environmental Center proved to be the nature lover’s ideal experience with flowering butterfly garden, and snake and

turtle exhibits.

The hospitable folks of Arts by Alexander provided a guided tour of

their fabulous art displays and treated residents with finger-food refreshments. It was an enriching

experience.

What’s Happening on Memory Lane

It’s raining men here on Memory Lane with nearly 1/3 of our “family” members being all manly and easy to please with a smile and some food. Our balloon volleyball games, however, have taken on a more competitive edge and we regularly have to blow up another one. It’s all fun till somebody decides we are playing football and heads down the “field” with our balloon tucked

under his arm. But for the most part, our fellas are helpful and funny and we are glad to have their insight and company.

We have a new regular visitor named Zeus. Zeus is a seven-year-old Siberian Husky. He is beautiful, very gentle, and, contrary to public opinion, would love us even if we did not give him treats. I know this because some of us refuse to part with those

treats and eat them ourselves. Don’t worry families, they are organic and safe for humans. We also grew a whole pot of miniature pansies from seed that we are very proud of.

The Summer has been so brutally hot and humid that we have feasted on our fair share of popsicles, watermelon, and lemonade. We had a pool party where we hung our bare feet over the side of a pool and more than a little splashing took place. We took a

chance and learned that what follows splashing is usually laughing. Speaking of laughing, we believe in doing it as much as possible. It is music to our ears and balm to our souls. Tricia tells me that her brother used to tell people, “It’s been fun so far”—

as if he expected more to come. Well, there is more to come. We look forward to the fall so we can spend more time outside. We look forward to the holidays once again and we look forward to your visits. “It’s been fun so far.”

Green Gazpacho From our Dietary Dept.

For a quick, really healthy, and delicious lunch or light supper.

In a blender

14 oz. bag baby spinach 1 avocado pitted and peeled

6 oz frozen peas, thawed or fresh sugar snap peas

2 green onions or 2 tablespoons chopped sweet onion

1 clove garlic 6 oz yogurt, plain 6 or 7 mint leaves 4 or 5 basil leaves

Blend until smooth, add salt and pepper

to taste. Very good with some cooked, chilled shrimp or chicken strips thrown in.

Ben Hunt, who founded our community, was a Christian Minister.

J. Donald Sams, who served as Managing Consultant, was a Christian Minister.

J. Mark Sams, who is our new Managing Consultant, is a Christian Minister.

We have always had dedicated Christians who also understand business.

The Piedmont Christian Home, Inc. Directors Meeting in August of this year

selected Joseph Mark Sams as the new Managing Consultant following the death of

J. Donald Sams.

Mark Sams was ordained to Ministry in 1981 and is currently the Minister of

LifeBridge Christian Church in Middletown, Ohio. He is also the owner of

The Woodworking Shop, a fast growing cabinet-making shop for churches, hotels,

and universities. In addition, Mark has been involved with PCH all of his life and he

understands the founding policies of our community.

We are pleased to have Mark oversee the Management of our

Team of Staff Members. He is the third generation of the Hunt family.
