CS: Mr. Morales, How are you today?JM: I am doing great. CS: Could you tell us about your background?JM: I am a Veteran. I served in the Army from 1972 until 1975. I am from Puerto Rico. I started in the VA in 1980 as a Staff Nurse at the San Juan VA Medical Center. My background is in Critical Care. I went to school and completed my Masters Degree in Nursing Administration and was promoted to Night Supervisor. I heard of an opportunity through a VA Program to develop potential leaders in the Nursing Field. I applied through Washington and was selected. So, I moved to the Miami VA where I did my residency. From there, I moved to Amarillo TX in 1983 as Chief Patient Officer, responsible for heading nursing and administrative functions/services. In 1996, I went to Birmingham AL VA Medical Center as Chief Patient Officer. I kept developing myself by taking numerous Executive Courses. I went to Johnson City Medical Center here in TN, as the Associate Director for Patient Care Services in 2001. In 2007, I came to TN Valley Healthcare as an interim director. I was selected by the Secretary in January 2008 as the Permanent Director of TN Valley Healthcare. CS: How does the Nashville Campus compare on a National Level to Other VA Medical Centers?JM: We rank the 6th or 7th largest healthcare system in the VA. We offer unique programs. For example, we have a Transplant Program, Bone Marrow Program, referrals for Cardiology, Outpatient Services, Mental Health, Long Term Care, etc. The secretary implemented a program that allows Veterans to compare the quality of the care we provide to Community Hospitals so they can see how we are doing.

CS: Where can Veterans find Contact Numbers for the VA for Medical Assistance?JM: There is a webpage. It is amazing how our Veterans are using technology to access information. You would think that is more for the younger generation but I've been surprised that the Veteran's from World War II are using technology. Their kids, grandchildren, banks, etc use technology, and they are taking advantage of its rewards. Visit www.tennesseevalley.va.gov which has all the different services and contact information and Key leaders of the organization. www.va.gov is a general site to communicate directly to their facility. We have a Patient Advocate Program, which is good at following up with Veteran Contacts and correctly refer our patients to the appropriate services. For any concerns, we will ensure that a Veteran has contact person who will be hands on. We work very closely to the Tennessee Dept of Veteran Affairs. They are another resource we utilize a lot. They have County Service Officers throughout the state to help Veterans. CS: With so many needs requiring Health Care for our Veterans, How can the Nashville VA Medical Center help?JM: Well, one important thing is Access. How do we reach out to the Veterans and make sure we are providing those basic services to our Veterans in the areas needed? At TN Valley Healthcare, we have 2 main campuses , one in Nashville and Murfreesboro, and then we have Clarksville and Chattanooga, which are our hubs. We have a number of clinics spread throughout Middle TN, as well. We are in the process of opening 3 additional clinics in McMinn County, Murray County, and Giles County. I think that is key in providing services to our Veterans that we are reaching out so they can get Primary Care, and Mental Health Services closer to home. The other thing is, we are utilizing technology, They can connect to V-Tell which is a television that they can communicate with their provider. This helps providers manage their patient to prevent excessive travel for the patient between campuses.

CS: Any new or upcoming news for TN Valley Healthcare?JM: Patient Centered Care. Our Secretary (of Veterans Affairs) was very vocal and clear that our program is to be centered around the Veteran and his/her family. We have grouped together and formed the Patient City Care Committee, which I lead, at our healthcare system. This program has been developed for Veterans and their next of kin to have a "Positive Experience" when they get services (i.e. Timely Services, Appointments, Welcoming Environment). Our team consists of engineers all the way to chaplains, clerks, privacy officers, and other leadership involved. We want them to have the BEST Service. CS: Being the director at the TN Valley Healthcare System, what does a typical work day consist of?JM: I start with a morning report from my staff recapping the last 24 hours of the whole Healthcare System. We address different topics such as, numbers of admissions, Veterans in our community that have been admitted, proceduresbed situation, ER activity, any incidents to be reported to the leadership, access, missed opportunities, etc. It is focused on the experience our Veterans have had. I have more meetings throughout the day from Quality Management, Patient Safety, Budgeting, Resources, to Current Projects. I take my mornings to make rounds around the hospital and interact with staff and our Veterans. I take the opportunity to get a feel of what's going on. Also. we have a strategic plan and we often meet to stay focused on the vision of our plan and to move forward as we look at our challenges we have to overcome.

CS RECIPE CORNER

1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into two-inch chunks. Place them in a large saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook the potatoes for 20 to 25 minutes, until very tender. Drain well, return to the saucepan, and cook over low heat until any remaining water evaporates. Set aside.

2. Meanwhile, blanch the basil leaves. First, ll a bowl with ice water and set aside. Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boiling point, add the basil, and cook for 15 seconds only. Drain and immediately plunge the leaves into the ice water. Drain and set aside.

3. In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat the half-and-half Parmesan cheese just until the cream simmers. Place the basil in a food processor and puree. Add the hot cream mixture and process until smooth.

4. With a handheld mixer, beat the potatoes until they are broken up. Slowly beat in the hot basil cream, the salt, and the pepper. If the potatoes need to be reheated, cover and cook gently over low heat for a few minutes. Pour into a serving bowl, sprinkle with extra Parmesan cheese, and serve hot.

Now that winter is in full swing and we gardening and plant enthusiasts are stuck inside…what can we do to keep ourselves

busy? Well we can start planning for next year's gardens and flowerbeds and I have a project to keep you busy! I am sure many of you have heard of companion planting. This is a method of planning and planting your garden in a way so that the plants will "help" each other grow and survive. For example, carrots and tomatoes like to be planted next to each other because each of them emit natural chemicals that deter pests, corn and beans like to be planted next to each other because the beans release nitrogen back into the soil and corn needs lots of nitrogen to grow and the beans grow up the corn stalks. Why should you companion plant??? Not only is this method good for the environment it is good for your pocket book! By planting this way you will save money on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides in your garden. The less chemicals used on your plants is always best. There is a wealth of information you can find on this subject on the internet and various books. The size of your garden will determine how involved your plan will be. Once you have the information and what you are going to plant prepared you just need a piece of paper and some colored pencils to plot out next spring's garden! Until next time, you can check out my blog at www.melissasgreencorner.blogspot.com

Game plan for Eating Better for the Year 2012

It's almost time to jump start your workout plan. In every area of our lives, self improvement starts with the mental process first.

Here are your eating tips: Grow it or know it. The best types of foods to eat are those grown or picked. That means a la natural. If you cannot pronounce the ingredients, then it's probably not good for you. Kick the Condiments! There is a good deal of sugar, sodium and fat in most condiments, like ketchup, honey mustard, ranch, syrup, tartar sauce and the list goes on. You reduce your fat and sugar intake by taking out the condiments. Try your food naked! Understand how to calculate your sugar intake. Take the number of grams, divide it by four equals the number of teaspoons PER SERVING! Eat it or Freeze it. If you find an item marked down with a use by date, it's ok to buy. If you don't prepare that day, then freeze it. Remember it works for veggies too. Teach your children how to eat healthy with colors. A colorful plate means a variety of foods items and food groups. If not for the kids, then for you. Remember to eat a variety of foods.

CS: What advice would you give to others about pursuing their passions?JM: I learned this from my dad, he told me, "Nothing Comes on a Silver Platter. You have to work hard for Success." Sometimes, you need to start by taking a job, one you may not have thought about, and learn from it so you can better yourself as a professional as well as a person. Ask Questions. What is it that I have to do to get from Point A to Point B? And understand that there may be different phases but when you look back you know it was all worth it. The one thing I learned in life is that we have positive and negative experiences. My dad taught me to learn from the experiences that weren't as positive, and don't let it take away from what you want to accomplish in life. If you can stay focused on your mission, you can accomplish a lot.

CS: What inspires you to continue your profession?JM: I get my energy from coming to work every day and just seeing the Veterans and seeing them satisfied. I receive many positive letters from Veterans and their families about services provided here. We use any negative letters to improve and learn. I know that every company has room for improvement. I feel empowered by the dedication of the staff and we work as a team to accomplish our goals. It's good to know that I have 3200 employees supporting me.

Decreasing Your Risk of Heart Attack - Part VII

We will continue discussing the last modifiable cardiac risk factor in this series: diabetes. Hopefully you under-stand, or are starting to understand, your risk of having a heart attack, and you taking responsibility and doing things to decrease your heart attack risk. There are 5 major risk factors for having a heart attack: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and family history. You can control 4 of the risk factors. Having one or more risk factors is synergistic. If a person has only 1 risk factor, his risk of developing heart disease is 5.4% over baseline. If a person smokes and has high cholesterol or high blood pressure, the risk is 10.3%. And if a person smokes, has high blood pressure and high cholesterol, his risk for developing heart disease is 18.9%.

Prevention of a disease is best but if you develop diabetes, keeping your blood sugar controlled will greatly reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease and thus decrease your risk of heart attack, however your risk will not be as low as if you did not have diabetes. Regular aerobic exercise and proper dietary intake are crucial in keeping your blood sugar controlled. Sometimes medications either oral (by mouth) or injections are needed to help control high blood sugar. Regardless of either being controlled by diet and exercise alone or if you require the help of medications, if you have diabetes regularly check your blood sugar and keep it well controlled. You have the power to do so. In the next issue we will conclude our series on decreasing your risk of heart attack

Rainby Tamika Christian

Like most people, my initial reaction to the rain is, “Oh Lord, I am going to get wet." As I was driving this morning God spoke into my spirit and said, "What if the rain was my anointing? Would you then mind getting wet?"

Instantly my thoughts changed, my perspective was given a different view. When it rains, I want you to know that it is beneficial! Rain broken down is:

R- Restoring A- Anointing I- Ignite N- New beginnings

God wants you to know that He wants to restore us, rebuild us, and ignite us to be more aligned with Him! The Bible says "God is not a man, so he does not lie.He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?" Numbers 23:19

Believe today in His promises for He made those promises to YOU! Stand in the rain, let the drops hit your face, stretch your hands out to God and shout, “Thank you God for you have washed me white as snow!

May the LOVE, PEACE, GRACE of GOD's HOLY SPIRIT rest upon you.

Are You Convinced ?

Bishop Calvin Lockett is the Senior Pastor of Christ the Healer Church, 1295 Paradise Hill Road in Clarksville, Tennessee. He also serves as the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship Tennessee State Bishop and oversees 23 churches throughout the state of Tennessee.

The prophet Elijah was so convinced that his God was greater than Baal until he challenged his competition to a showdown. Although he was outnumbered by 449 men, his confidence in God was the motivation that coerced him to make such an awesome challenge. God proved that Elijah served the True and Living God with a great display of power. After Baal failed to answer the cry (and ceremonial activity) of his prophets, Elijah dug a trench around the altar, prepared his sacrifice, and asked Baal’s prophets to pour twelve pitchers of water on top of it (I Kings 18:30-35). When he called on the Name of our God, not only was the sacrifice consumed, but the wood, stones, and dust as well (I Kings 18:38)! The Fire was so powerful that it even “licked up” the water that was in the trench! What a Mighty God we serve!

More than ever, the forces of evil are in operation against God’s people (Ephesians 6:12). During times like these, our faith has to rise to the point that we’re confident that God is with us! Elijah serves as an excellent example that “if God is for us, He’s more than the whole world against us.” Perhaps you feel “outnumbered” because of the problems that confront you. I want to encourage you that our God’s Power is above any other opposing forces in the universe. Let’s Pray: “Father, thank You for Your Power to deliver us out of any situation and circumstance, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

By Bishop Calvin LockettI Kings 18:22 en Elijah said to the people, "I alone am le a prophet of the LORD, but Baal's prophets are 450 men. 23

"Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no re under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a re under it.24 "en you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by re, He is God." And all the people

said, "at is a good idea."

You may ask yourself, "What does a man falling in love with a woman centuries ago have to do with me?" Actually, not a thing, except for the creation of the holiday. For those who celebrate Valentine's Day, you want to keep your loved one feeling special on this romantic day, so you may want to make time to plan something special instead of doing something last minute.

If you're without ideas or your funds are tight, but wish to do something memorable,

remember that gifts should come from the heart and don't necessarily have to have a high price tag (for some.) Use your creativity to spice things up by indulging your special someone with your natural born gifts. Doing this gives you a day filled with romance and exciting memories without emptying out your wallet. Whatever you choose to do, make sure that you do it from the heart, because that is worth much more than any expensive gift. Affordable gift ideas that will allow you and your loved one to have quality time set aside while creating a special moment: If you are poetically or musically talented, compose a song or poem and serenade your sweetheart. If you have art skills, use your colors and creativity to design a card or picture that will express your love for your significant other. For a great massage. Instead of sending your special one to a spa, if you have theraputic hands, get some oil, and surprise him or her by doing it yourself. If your schedule allows it, do household chores that you normally don't do. If you're a great cook, offer a romantic, candlelit dinner at home and take ten minutes to express your love while staying clear from crowded restaurants.

Valentine's Day Ideas for Couples

So, you got engaged over the holidays - congratulations! Now, where to begin? The best thing to do is consult a wedding

planner. Planning your wedding should not add stress to your life, it should bring you joy. A professional wedding planner can help put everything into perspective. Yes, you will pay for their expertise; however, it will be money well spent for the peace of mind that your dream wedding can be achieved. Many wedding planners will give you a free consultation for your first meeting. This will be the time you relate your wedding ideas and they give you an estimate of their charges to deliver your request should you choose to hire them. Before you hire them make sure to check out their referrals and view pictures of their work. You will not regret hiring a professional service to take on all the details as much as you might regret being totally exhausted at your wedding from all the work you had to do yourself. The earlier you get started, the easier it will be…so get moving! Thanks and blessings,Laurie E. Barbee

Wife, Mother, Sister, Friend, Motivator, Business woman these are just a few words describing one of the hardest working women in Clarksville TN, Treva Gordon. Mrs Gordon recently received the "Omega Psi Phi Woman of the Year" due to the zealous goal-minded; God inspired programs, teachings, ministry activities, businesses as well as motivational teams created for all people here in Clarksville. I asked Mrs Gordon "what inspired you to be so successful?" her answer "simply, Rejection". Mrs Gordon then shared her testimony of how she was rejected for a job, yet GOD used her rejection to inspire her to become the well-rounded, well-known community leader that she is today. Her life is ministry; she also stated "I made a promise to GOD to give my all in everything that I do, that's why I run so hard". After a detailed list of many amazing attributes referencing Mrs. Gordon, she stood humbly accepting her award. With her head held slightly down for a few seconds; she then lifted her head facing the audience and thanked God for her accomplishments and also thanked Omega Psi Phi for the award. She shared her testimony "God saved me; I was very sick, I could have died but GOD saved me, GOD healed me, God heard my prayers and gave me a chance". Her words encouraged all the listeners that evening to dream it, pray for it and do it! God is all you need to provide, sustain and bless your endeavors. Mrs Gordon is the mother of three children and a wife along with all the other hats that she wears within this community from Ft. Campbell, Clarksville and Nashville surrounding area. Hats off to you Mrs. Treva Gordon!!!

The Evangelist Corner

The Work of an Evangelistby Dontez "the evangelist" Brock

Evangelist are known for traveling from city to city and state to state preaching the Gospel of Jesus. ey emphasis the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and savior and many are known to have special gifts given by God. Some speak divine words from heaven while others perform miracles in their meetings. ey host revivals and gather in multitudes of people. Evangelist are special as they rarely deal with the everyday struggle and structure of local ministry, yet they are essential in the building of one. ey may come and preach believers happy and led sinners to repentance but once done they are gone, leaving for their next assignment. An Evangelist cares deeply for the salvation of all people. ey want to

see Gods children prosper in every area of life. ey constantly give the will of God to believers and unbelievers wherever

they go, and “go” they do. Evangelist often leaves a place to continue his/her work someplace else. In the bible we see that Gods assignments and the length of stay vary. Evangelism is not only preaching 1-3 days but quite

possibly 1-3 years in a city. Construction on a road or building takes time, it takes labor, it takes sacrice but once the complete work is done you have something that may last forever. e kingdom of God will last forever and we (evangelist) must never forget that whether our mission is short or long establishing the kingdom of God is most important.

Titans Season Not A Merry OneBy: Glenn Rivers Halliburton

The Titans Season has been a been disappointment for most fans, so what can we look at that is good about this season? Tennessee receiver Nate Washington is proof of how much a little confidence boost can mean to an NFL Player, Even with Kenny Britt out since September, the seventh-year veteran is having his best season yet in the NFL and is just four catches shy of having the most catches by a receiver on this team since 2004. Washington also has stepped up as a much-needed leader for the Titans in Mike Munchak's first season as head coach. Washington credits former quarterback turned receivers coach Dave Ragone, hired by Munchak earlier this year, with boosting his confidence since the lockout ended. The receiver who was undrafted coming out of Tiffin University when he signed with Pittsburgh in 2005 is in his third season with Tennessee since signing as an unrestricted free agent in March 2009, and this easily is his best. With two games remaining, Washington has career highs with 66 catches for 860 yards and has matched his career-best with six touchdown receptions. He also leads the AFC with the most catches on third down, and his 27 receptions rank second only to Roddy White of Atlanta in the NFL. Munchak said he hired Ragone intrigued by the assistant's ability to explain to receivers what a quarterback wants out of them. The result also includes Damian Williams (35) and Lavelle Hawkins (42) also having career years in catches.

"Voices of Freedom"

As a Minister of the Gospel, I have had the opportunity of serving for 15 years in ministry. I am amazed of the ministry gifts and the many volunteers who serve in the prison ministry through out the country. One such volunteer named Tina Hutchison is a recording artist, published author and founder and president with Holding Out Hope Ministries. She is

making such a difference in prisoner's lives. Tina is an inspirational, instrumental and incredible praise leader. Her humor, heart, and hurtful life experiences help her to minister with prayer, purpose, and power to some of societies labeled most dangerous criminals. But does she see them only as criminals? Of coarse not, she sees them as human beings who have made some bad choices or bad decisions, who, needs a savior. Tina's compassion and love for Christ has caused many to desire to make better life choices. I know Christmas is about giving but volunteering and giving of your time is as important as giving of your finances. Women, who have been prostitutes, addicts, thieves, and murderers, are now finding their identity in Christ. And where they had lost hope they are experiencing God's love for them through Praise. Sometimes we all can take for granted our Freedom. Freedom to go as we choose, Freedom to work a job or career, Freedom to spend time with family and friends. However, when you are incarcerated many times these freedoms are no longer envisioned or experienced. Truly Judges, courts, and societies can take away such freedoms. And in some cases because such freedoms have been abused, one may need it taken away to rethink, renew, and rehabilitate. But, one thing that cannot be taken from inmates is the Freedom of Praise. Just ask one of the many inmates in the Women's Prison. And somewhere you will find or hear expressions that cannot be locked up or punished. You will hear such a melody and expression of love from a group called Voices of Freedom. Women who did not feel loved, now, feel love. Women who didn't have or come from a decent family, now have one. Women who didn't know God, now are experiencing a relationship with God. We truly thank God for volunteers such as Tina. Tina thank you for your Voice of Freedom, that has made the difference and is empowering others. If you would like to contact Tina please visit her website at
