Disciple II Into the Word, Into the World - February 4
Intended for those who have completed Disciple I, this 32-week study deepens Biblical understanding by focusing on Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. It encour-ages the practice of spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives. Participants learn to approach all experiences of life as an opportunity for faithful witness and service. The materials fee is $35, which covers the cost of the study manual. Pancake Teams Needed!The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is February 12, and we want to make sure that there are plenty of pancakes ready and available for all. This year we have decided to ask groups of people in the church (a Sunday School class, a UMW circle, a group of UM men, a group of youth, some choir members, or just a group of friends) to set up a griddle and cook pancakes. We will hopefully have a number of griddles going and we can even have a friendly competition going to get folks to come to your griddle for pancakes! The church will provide the pancake mix and your group can feel free to cook plain pancakes or to add whatever you’d like (ie: strawberries, blueberries, pecans, etc.). It will be a lot of fun! If you don’t have a griddle, we’ll help you borrow one, so don’t let that keep you from joining in the fun. Contact Suzanne Steves at [email protected] and let her know you plan to participate.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 12! A chance to eat, enjoy fellowship and celebrate before the
season of Lent starts the next day.Shrove is the past tense of shrive, which means to obtain forgiveness for one’s sins by way of confession and penance. So Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the custom for Christians to be “shriven” before Lent.

Mary Donates to the Ronald McDonald House
Mary Mount, a member of the Sunshine Sunday School Class, is showing off the most recent donation of aluminum can tabs. She and her class collect these tabs and deliver them to the McDonald house. Beth Cochran, leader of the class, stated that approximately 3 gallons of these tabs will buy a free night and one day of meals for a family who has a
child in an Austin hospital with a serious illness. If you would like to support Mary and her class with this great mission, please save your tabs and drop them in one of the McDonald House banks in the foyer of the FSH or by the Coke machine in the Adult Education Building. This is a great way of helping without having to contribute a thing, except a little bit of time.

Fellowship Committee Needs MembersPlease consider joining our committee. We put on the fun events like the Easter egg hunt and the Fall Festival. We also help support the Wednesday night dinners. Your commitment can be per event or for the whole year. The Mary/Martha Circle will meet for a breakfast prepared by Gail Jones, Margaret Jones and Camille Raycraft. Our program will be presented by Cindy Brandt talking about Montopolis Friendship Center. Breakfast will begin at 9:30 (registration at 9:15 am). Cost of the breakfast will be $3.00. The Montopolis is in need of school supplies, so anything you can provide will be greatly appreciated. We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God’s ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you’ve dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! FPU classes begin February 11 meet for around an hour and a half each week for nine weeks. Habitat for Humanity Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
It was a great Christmas season and now it’s pancake season! The next fund-raiser is our pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on March 2. This is a lot of fun and is a great way to raise funds for the 2013 Methodist-built home. Tickets will be $10 each, and we get to keep $5 for each person that shows up for pancakes ($10 for those who don’t cash in their tickets). You must buy tickets in advance; no ticket sales at the door. Breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, Eggs Benedict, sausage, bacon, hash browns, juice, and coffee. What a deal! If you cannot make it to the breakfast and miss the ticket sales, you can always place a check in the offering basket any Sunday; make the check out to OHUMC and put Habitat for Humanity in the memo line. We can always use prayers for the success of the fundraising and the build.
Methodist Habitat for Humanity Build – VOlUNTeeRS NeeDeD
In addition to our on-going fundraising, it is time to get volunteers lined up for the build. The build starts on March 16th. This is the best workday of all, as we start with an empty concrete foundation and finish the day with a totally framed house – you can see the progress quickly! The build is schedule to be completed on May 18th. We have the following workdays available with the listed number of workers we need to provide: March 16 – ten workers; April 13 – five workers; May 11 – five workers We are way behind in our fundraising. We have only raised about $2,500 towards our goal of $10,000. Please consider donating addi-tional funds. You can do this by placing a donation in the offering plate during Sunday services. Make checks out to “OHUMC” with “Habitat for Humanity” in the memo line or place cash in an offering envelope and label it “Habitat for Humanity.” We also need your prayers for the success of the Methodist build.Call Jerry Morford at 301-3738 or send him an e-mail at [email protected] if you have questions about the Methodist Build or would like to help with the pancake breakfast. You can also sign up between Sunday services where you will see Jerry selling tickets to the pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on March 2. I need firm commitments for these workdays.

Hospital VisitationWhen John Reynolds & Val Sansing were pastors here at OHUMC, Val decided it would be a great help to the pastors if we had a group of lay people that would visit the members and their families that were in the hospital. The pastors still visit, but
they would always know that someone from the church would be there too. It brought comfort to the ones in the hospital as well as the pastors. We now need several new helpers with this loving ministry. We cover all the Austin hospitals, but most of our members are in the South Austin or Westlake hospitals. You would have 2 days a month to cover, given to you on a calendar, usually the same days every month if you prefer. We have several people who work in or near a hospital, so they cover just that one. This very caring and important ministry only takes a short while of your time, but can mean so much to that person in the hospital. We really need some of you to volunteer. How To Get News In The Cornerstone Or On The Church Website
Email It! The most reliable way to get your information in is by email. Send information (and pictures if available) to [email protected].
Hand It Over! You can also place information in the acrylic letter box marked “Cornerstone” on the door to the copier room in the church office, or place it in my nametag folder in the narthex.
Don’t Be Late! The Cornerstone is published twice a month. Deadlines fall every other Friday. If you’re not sure, email or call Page, or look on the back page of the newsletter for the next deadline.
What Should You Say? As you might imagine, there’s a lot of infor-mation to fit in each issue, so please keep your articles brief and be prepared to let me edit. Write a complete article, or just send the “who, what, why, where and when” and I’ll write it for you (and add art or photos!).
Don’t Forget Tracy! Information in the Cornerstone doesn’t always make it to the bulletin and vice-versa, so be sure to submit your information to Office Manager Tracy Stewart also. Tracy compiles info for the Sunday bulletins and maintains the church calendar (aka room reservations). [email protected] or 288-3836.
The Website! Most news in the Cornerstone is added to the website “Events” page anyway, but if you have an event notice that needs to be uploaded just contact me. I can also make online sign-up forms. These forms can be filled out online, completed forms are delivered via email immediately. However, please be aware that we’re not set up to receive electronic payments.
Need an Ad or Poster? If you’d like to have a flyer made to post around campus, contact Stella Burkhalter at 288-3836 to check our production schedule, and I can help you design one.

United Methodism 101!Whether you are a new or long-time member of The United Methodist Church, or simply an individual interested in learning more about the denomination, this online course will take you on a basic journey through The United Methodist Church. Each of the five modules should take 20-30 minutes to complete, and interactive exercises will be presented throughout. LENTEN LOCK-IN! Calling all First-Fifth Graders to a very special event. Make plans now to join us at the first ever Oak Hill UMC Lenten Lock-In on March 22! Using a curriculum based on Adam Hamilton’s book The Way, kids will experience the love of God and the importance of Jesus in our lives through Bible study, activities, music, videos, and worship. You won’t want
to miss it! The Lock-In will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 22 and end at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 23. The cost will be $35/person or $60/2 or more in the same family. eAGle QUeST - WIlDeRNeSSHigh School Spring Break Trip
Camp eagle - March 8-12
We will be headed into the Hill Country Wilderness near Rocksprings, Texas out at Camp Eagle for an “Eagle Quest” with our friends at Dripping Springs UMC! This retreat is for students in 9th-12th grades.
Purpose: Going on trail is the perfect way to leave distractions behind and focus your group. On trail your students will come out of their shells simply because the shells we all carry around in our day-to-day lives won’t fit in their backpacks. Trail brings out the true self, enabling students to grow and knitting groups together.
Description: This is the classic Eagle Quest (EQ) experience in that most groups go on trail. This track is completely customized for your group but there are certain things to look forward to. Most groups spend their first night at the EQ base camp where we prepare gear, and prepare the group to go on trail. The majority of the trip is spent on trail where you’re backpacking through the Camp Eagle backcountry with just your group. Throughout each day you’re doing activities, each designed for a specific purpose. Finally you come off trail and celebrate what you’ve accomplished. This trip is especially suited for high school campers and leadership groups.
Total Cost for Trip: $250.00 (Deposit due by Sunday February 17.)
We will be leaving from Oak Hill on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. and re-turning around noon on Tuesday, March 12th. We have limited space, so it is important to sign up as soon as possible. A $125.00 deposit, due by February 17th, will reserve a spot for you on our trip. If there are a couple of adults out there interested in going, I’ll pay your way, so let me know! HIGH SCHOOl MIDWINTeR ReTReAT February 15-18 @ Echo Valley (near Leakey)
There is still time to register for the MidWinter Retreat, an event put on by the Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church. It has become a huge part of our winter and has acted as a springboard to so much more - more involvement in youth, a deeper sense of mission outreaches, have had the most impact in the lives of our students of anything we do. This year, the cost is $110 per student. There are scholarships avail-able at the Conference, District, and church level (please email or text me if you need a scholarship - we do not want cost to be a factor). This weekend will be full of worship, preaching, free time, great friendships, good food, and plenty of fun. I hope you will make plans for your student to join us! We will provide transportation. The easiest way to sign up is to register online at www.reachingyouth.org/midwinter.html. Check-in time is at 7 p.m. on start date (dinner not provided). The Midwinter Plus weekends are 4 days, and end at noon on Monday. Participants may leave early Sunday evening or Monday morning to return to work or school. After you register, please let Dave Stewart, the Director of Youth Ministries, know so we can make arrangements for vehicles, at [email protected].
Important Info about Midwinter MissionMidwinter Mission is a unique retreat in which participants will explore the issues of hunger, experience a “Homeless Day Experiment”, and discover what life is like for someone living on the streets of a city. Participants will also have awesome times of worship, attend a worship service at the Annual Conference Called Session at University UMC (just to let them know we have youth in our churches!) and enjoy times of fellowship and community. Each camper attending MW Mission is asked to bring a loaf of bread, and a jar of peanut butter and jelly. Each church group is asked to bring two cases of water. Lastly, anyone want-ing to donates coats or blankets can do so and bring them to either Midwinter 1, the Conference Office in San Antonio, or Midwinter Mission for them to be distributed to the homeless.

Join the Haiti Mission TripA mission trip to Haiti has been scheduled through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) on April 6-13, 2013, which is one week after Easter. (Easter is March 31, 2013.) Haiti is still recovering from the devastat-ing earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. UMVIM, in collaboration with Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti, is entering the third and final year of its Haiti Response Plan. UMVIM’s theme is Christian Love in Action, which says it all. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a ministry of reconciliation by moving yourself and others closer to glorifying God.
