CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ MASTERY OF PAST TENSE
AND STUDENTS’ WRITING PAST RECOUNT TEXT AT SMA N 1
KOTAWARINGIN LAMA.
ABSTRACT
The objective of the study is to find out the correlation between students
mastery of past tense and students achievement in writing past recount text.
The method of this study is correlation study. Population of this research is
eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Kotawaringin Lama and the sample was applied
by a random sampling technique, with the total of sample is 40 students. The
instruments used to collect the data were tests, the tests were past tense test which
used multiple choice, and writing test. The collected data was analyzed by using
Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The formula used to find out the correlation
between students’ mastery of past tense and students’ achievement in writing past
recount text.
The result of this research are as follows, the average score of students’
mastery of past tense is 59.9. The average of students’ achievement in writing past
recount text is 64.41. The final result of correlation coeficient (rxy) was 0.347 and the
critical value from the formula of degree of freedom 1% is 0,403 and 5% is 0.312 it
means that the result obtained from the computation is greater than its critical
value.Based on the finding, the table of “r” product moment show that the correlation
value is on the “low” size, in which between 0.20-0.399. It meant, there is low
correlation between students’ mastery of pas tense and writing past recount
text. Moreover, based on the calculation of determination coefficient (KP) obtained,
mastery of past tense has12.04% constribution towards writing past recount text at
eleventh grade students’ SMA N 1 Kotawaringin Lama. Based on the result, it can be
concluded that there is significant correlation between students’ mastery of past tense
and students’ achievement in writing past recount text.
It is recommended that: The students should improve their mastery of past
tense because the mastery of past tense can improve their achievement in expressing
past activities in writing and the students should practice to write frequently. It is
essential for the teacher to know the one of the factors affect the students’ ability in
expressing past activities especially in writing is the students’ mastery of past tense.
The teachers are suggested to vary the way they teach particularly teaching English
writing. Not only teaching scientific writing but also they are expected to increase
x
students’ grammar mastery. For the researchers, this study may also be relevant
previous study that can be used by other researcher to conduct a further research
relating to correlation between language skill and language components. This study
also may become the source of inspiration for the next researchers to improve the
weaknesses and choose the other instruments, expansion, or evaluation.

besar dati critical value.
menulis past recount text.
