OUR OBJECTIVES Our objectives are to assist coffee growing communities worldwide in: !  The advancement of education; including the establishment and operation of schools and xxother educational establishments !  The prevention or relief of poverty !  The advancement of health or the saving of lives !  The advancement of environmental protection or environmental improvement BACKGROUND The Costa Foundation was established in 2012 as a registered charity to build on the project commenced by its sponsor Costa Limited under the name “The Costa Foundation” . Prior to incorporation funds were raised via Charities Trust, an independent registered charity. For ease of reference, in this document the expression “The Costa Foundation” refers to both The Costa Foundation charity and the projects undertaken under The Costa Foundation name prior to incorporation. For a detailed history see Appendix 1.

THE STORY SO FAR Between 2008 and 2014 forty schools or school projects were completed in coffee growing communities in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Uganda, and Vietnam. These projects have provided access to education for over 20,000 children. For further details of projects see Appendix 2.

OUR VALUES

Equality We support equal access to all children irrespective of their gender, ethnicity or religion.

Collaborative We will use strategic partnerships to help us deliver our vision. Prior to agreeing to a school build or a school project, we will ensure there is support from the local community and the local authorities.

Effective We are cost effective and will maximise the impact of donations.

Genuine We are honest and principled. We do what we say we will do. We strive to improve with each of our projects through continual self-assessment.

Enduring In all cases we are seeking to provide facilities that will remain sustainable and fit for purpose without further aid.

MONITORING & EVALUATION The Costa Foundation has provided funding for 40 schools or school projects. However, at present we have limited data on the outcomes or impacts of these projects. We will implement a monitoring and evaluation program so that we can assess our performance against our desired outcomes. We will learn from our mistakes and continue to improve our future projects. Evaluation will cover: 1. Access to Education !  How many school places are provided 2. Health and Safety !  Infrastructure Security (fencing and lighting) !  Sufficiency of sanitary facilities !  Sufficiency of water 3. Infrastructure Quality !  Sufficiency of desks and furniture for teachers and children !  Sufficiency of textbooks and learning aids !  All dormitories to have electric lighting !  Recreational facilities

FUNDING We need to raise £7.5 million in the next 5 years to achieve our Vision . To date our main source of income has been from Costa Ltd, either from Costa employee fund raising or from donations from products sold in Costa stores. We have also benefitted from matching funds from Costa’s parent company Whitbread plc.                                  FUTURE FUNDING    We will continue to work closely with Costa Ltd to maximise Costa employee’s support, and ensure successful fund raising campaigns, however we also need to look for other streams of funding. We will identify external donors in the wider coffee industry and seek to engage support for The Costa Foundation. We will set up a Costa Foundation website that will demonstrate the success of our projects to date and will enable donations to be made by the general public. We will investigate the opportunities for awards and grants. We will constantly review our fund raising position and seek expert advice on how to raise more funds.

PROJECT DELIVERY We are dependent on our partners based in the countries where we fund our projects. Experience has shown that we must ensure that we receive regular project progress reports. We will improve our monitoring system during the build process and make this a condition of the release of funds. We will constantly review the NGO’s and delivery partners that we work with and be prepared to change and add new partners if appropriate.
