Soccer Double Header

If you weren’t at Highmark Stadium on

September 27th for the Soccer Double Header,

let me fill you in. The girls started the night at

6 PM against the OLSH Chargers. Running un-

defeated, the girls only needed to beat OLSH

to win sections. Sadly, they lost 0-2 though

they still hold 2nd place in the section. Then,

the boys played the Avonworth Antelopes. Af-

ter going into two overtimes, the score ended 0

-0. Throughout the night, Carlynton spirit was

in the air with everyone, including the parents

and teachers, chanting for the Cougars.

Green Day - Revolution Radio

Since Green’s Day last al-

bum releases of Uno, Dos, and Tres, which were re-

leased weeks apart from

each other, fans have wanted

something more from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Inductees. Fans have finally

gotten what they have wait-ed for with their newest al-

bum Revolution Radio. The

music leans towards their 2009 album, 21st Century

Breakdown; it is back to

good old Green Day. With a

few exceptions for a couple of pop rock songs, like Still

Breathing, most of the songs

sound like classic guitar driven beats. Some of the

key tracks off the album are Bang Bang, Revolution Ra-

dio, and Youngblood. It is

now available on Google

Play and Itunes. Official and Lyric videos for

Youngblood, Still Breath-

ing, Bang Bang, and Revo-lution Radio are available on

YouTube also.

Zodiac Halloween

Costumes

By: Arabella Hunt

Aries (March 21-April 20): with an adventurous side, a

perfect costume for Halloween would be your favorite

superhero or a villain for a scarier costume!

Taurus (April 21-May 21): reliable and intelligent, this

year Tauruses should be a doctor or if you want a scary

costume, an evil scientist!

Gemini (May 22-June 21): get matching costumes with a

friend and go be twins as any characters this Halloween!

Cancer (J une 22-July 22): a perfect costume for your

zodiac would be a cowboy or cowgirl with a loving and

down-to-earth personality!

Leo (July 23-August 21): as a person with strong leader-

ship qualities, Leos should dress up as a king or queen

this year! For a scarier costume, werewolf is the way to

go!

Virgo (August 22-September 23): sweet and kind, a good

costume for Virgos would be a Disney character such as

the princesses or princes!

Libra (September 24-October 23): Libras can put a

creepy twist on a normal costume to get a perfect balance

of fun and scary this Halloween!

Scorpio (October 24-November 22): be daring this Hal-

loween with a costume that shows your confidence, like a

vampire!

Sagittarius (November 23-December 22): strong and

brave, a Sagittarius should go as their favorite main char-

acter from a book or movie!

Capricorn (December 23- January 20): try for something

scary this year! A good costume for a Capricorn would be

a zombie!

Aquarius (January 21-February 19): go magical this

Halloween as a witch or wizard to show off your intellec-

tual and independent side!

Pisces (February 20-March 20): Pisces are water zodi-

Tuesday, November 8th, the United States will choose their 45th

President to reside in the Oval Office.

Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

are campaigning all over the US and two of the three debates are already

over, but what are the candidates actual-

ly campaigning for?

Donald Trump, the Republican

candidate, is calling for tax cuts, ending

illegal immigration, and repealing the Affordable Care Act. With tax cuts, he

wants to cut corporate tax by 15% to

end loopholes. In regards to illegal im-

migration, he wants to first build a wall between the US and Mexico. He then

plans to enforce the laws with visas by

making them leave if they are expired. Also, he wants to deport illegal immi-

grants who are committing crimes. Last-

ly, Trump says that by repealing the

Affordable Care Act, he will create a free market health care plan that the

people are in charge of. His Vice Presi-

dential pick is Gov. Mike Pence of Indi-

ana.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic

candidate, has different views on how to

better America for the future. She be-

lieves in open borders, tuition free

school, and women’s rights. Instead of

deporting undocumented illegal immi-

grants, she wants to grant them citizen-

ship. She wants to make college tuition

free for families with low income, and

endorses the phrase “equal pay for equal

work”. Her Vice Presidential pick is

Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia.

Who’s That Teacher?

By: Lexi Jones

Which teacher am I? I work at Carlynton Junior-Senior High

School. I have worked here for 24 years and it was the very

first school I taught. When I am not at school, my favorite hob-

bies are coaching my daughter’s softball team, working at the

golf course, and golfing. I love to watch the Masters Golf Tour-

nament to pass time. I love the sport golf, but did not play it as

a kid. In spite of playing golf, I was still very active when I was

younger. I wrestled, played baseball, and football. Like every

other people, I have inspirations, too. My father and former

football coach inspires me the most. I also love eating at a res-

taurant called Starboard. I love to order the Buffalo Chicken

Wrap.

Think you know who that teacher is? Send your guesses to Mr.

Stagl in room 108! The first 20 students with the correct re-

sponse will win a sharpened Ticonderoga pencil!

Coming Soon: A New Senior

Area!

The 2016 Presidential Election

By: Morgan Harding By: Olivia Cindrich

Student Government has

been busy! Our latest pro-

ject includes remodeling the

senior lunch area behind the

cafeteria. Soon to be added

is a patio, a cornhole game,

new tables, and a dividing

wall. We would like to

thank everyone for their

great work so far and every-

one who donated their time

to help. The senior area is

planned to be enjoyed for

years to come. Look for it

to be opened to seniors in

the next upcoming weeks!

DIY HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

By: Elizabeth BeHage

If you are one of those people who wait until

the last minute to decide what you are wearing for

Halloween, then this article is for you. From search-

ing on the internet, I found the top 5 semi-simple

Halloween costumes.

1.Rosie the

Riveter

If you are a fem-

inist or you’re a

history person,

this costume is

for you. All you

need to rock it is

red lipstick, a

red bandana,

and a jean jacket

with a pair of dark jeans.

2. Barbie/Ken

Doll

If you have a

big cardboard

box lying

around that you

are willing to

decorate, this

should be a

great costume

choice. Just

load up on the

hairspray and

makeup and the

look will be

amazing.

3. Comic Book

Character

If you are willing to

paint your face with

dots and comic

makeup, you

should pick this op-

tion. It is simple

and quick, needing

only a telephone

(depending on the

comic book charac-

ter, your costume

can differ).

4. Powderpuff Girls

If you have a friend

group made up of 3,

this is a cute idea.

All that is needed is

one pink/red dress

(Blossom), one blue

dress (Bubbles), one

green dress

(Buttercup), and

some white high

socks. Wear a black

belt around your

waist and top the red/pink dress with a red bow.

Black shoes are suggested. Bubbles has blonde hair,

Blossom has orange/red, and Buttercup has black,

but you don’t need to match the hair color, necessari-

ly.

5. Skeleton

A simple, quick, and

classic Halloween

costume would be

the skeleton. Buy

black and white face

paint from a Hallow-

een Store (or

Walmart) and paint

your face like a

skull. Wear a skele-

ton hoodie/shirt or

make your own. (Cut

paper in the shape of bones and staple it onto a hood-

ie/shirt you wouldn't mind having tiny holes in).

Although these costumes are pretty do-it-yourself

esque, you could always cut holes in a sheet (for

your eyes) and become a ghost.

Spiffy Sponsors

Mr. Stagl has been an employee of

the Carlynton School District for

over nine years, and has helped

with a variety of programs: Club

Sponsors, Coach, and a History

Teacher during that time. He has

been described as one of the Cou-

gar’s biggest fans, and is frequent-

ly spotted sporting his famous

“Pickle Pin”. In his time away from

CHS, he loves spending time with

his wife, family, and friend Mr.

Kozy. He hopes to see the Cleve-

land Indians win a World Series

soon, but would be happy if the

Cleveland Browns just won a foot-

ball game.

Miss Fris is in her second year

teaching at Carlynton. She taught

for three years in her hometown,

Johnstown, PA, before moving to

Pittsburgh. Last year, Miss Fris re-

vived the Interact Club, an organi-

zation committed to community ser-

vice. She has a kitten named Obi-

Wan Catnobi who loves to drink

coffee, eat Cheetos, and shred pa-

per. Miss Fris spends her free time

rooting for PITT, snowboarding, and

baking traditional Slovak foods with

her family.

Homecoming on Broadway

By Tara Wade

Students this past week had fun celebrating homecoming with spirit week, the bonfire at the field, pep rally, football game,

and the annual Homecoming dance.

The pep rally had both the girls and guys on the court playing Carlynton trivia with questions such as: “How many pez dis-

pensers does Mr.Kozy have in his class room?” The boys won

a close game with one more point over the girls. Throughout the assembly, the student body was treated to performances by

the Marching Band, Cheerleaders, and finally the Cougar

Drumline. A Dance-off featured some of the best moves from every grade (and even Mr. Istik), and even the Spirit Stick

went out to the Sophomore Class!

This year’s king and queen were seniors Ray Bordenick and Sofia Carrasco. At the dance everyone dressed suited for

Broadway. Featured in the hallways were set pieces used in

past Carlynton productions. There were lots of girls wearing a

two piece style dress and guys in a classic tux. It was a great Homecoming week and Saturday night for Carlynton.

Welcome Vice Principal Gattuso!

Interview conducted by Olivia Cindrich and Lexi Jones

What inspired you to become a vice principal?

- “I first went into music education and taught that for a

while. I then realized that there was more to education

and I wanted to become involved in everything, so here

I am!”

Why did you come to Carlynton?

- “At first I taught at a small school and then I moved to

a big school. I missed being in the atmosphere of a

small school and I enjoy Jr. High as well as Sr. High.”

How is Carlynton different from other schools you’ve

worked at?

- “Once again, it’s a small school and I love the size in

comparison to my last school. I also like the 7th-12th

setup. It’s rare to find a school like that these days, but I

love it. I also love the opportunities a small school pro-

vides to get involved in different activities that would be

hard to do in a large school.”

What is your favorite part about Carlynton so far?

- “I would say the variety of activities is great and the

amount of kids involved in different things around the

school. Also, I love that I have the opportunity to get

involved, too!”

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

- “I workout, go to concerts and hang out with my fami-

ly and friends most of the time. I also have a son who is

2 years old so he keeps me busy.”

What are your hopes for the upcoming years?

- “I want to get more input from students to make sure

the school is better socially and academically.”

HAYRIDE

Pumpkin patch (dirt mix)

Invented by Strang-e

Ingredients:

2 (14 ounce) packages chocolate sandwich cookies

(such as Oreo®)

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

3 1/2 cups milk

2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix

1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 (5 ounce) bag gummy worm candies (optional)

40 candy (mellocreme) pumpkins

1/2 cup vanilla frosting (optional)

1 drop green food coloring

Directions: 1. Crush cookies in 2 or 3 batches in a food processor.

Pulse until you get fine crumbs, about 30 seconds per batch. Transfer to a bowl.

2. Place cream cheese, butter, and confectioner's sugar

in food processor; mix until smooth, about 30 seconds.

3. Whisk milk and pudding mixes together in a bowl

until pudding is thickened; fold in whipped topping. Stir

in cream cheese-butter mixture.

4. Press 1/3 of the cookie crumbs onto the bottom of a

9x13-inch pan. Sprinkle half of the gummy worms on

the crumb layer. Spread half of the pudding mixture

over the crumbs and candy. Carefully layer another 1/3

of the crumbs over the pudding mixture and sprinkle on

more gummy worms. Add the last layer of cookie

crumbs and smooth them out for your "pumpkin patch."

5. Place pumpkin candy in rows with enough room to for frosting

"vines" and "leaves."

6. Tint frosting with green food coloring and transfer to piping bag.

Connect pumpkins with "vines" and add swirling tendrils. Switch to a

leaf tip and create some leaves.

Undertale: Why Revolutionary?

When you’re bored, you might go home and play a game

with your family, right? Maybe eat a snack, do your home-

work, or something like that. When Toby Fox (Born on Oc-

tober 11, 1991) got bored, he decided to make a game all by

himself (with the small help of a friend). After he made a

Halloween hack for Earthborn, he surprised everyone by

making a game all by himself called, Undertale. He was the

producer, designer, and game creator; all of that was done

by himself and a friend. At first, it seemed like a normal

game, but Toby added one unique feature that made millions

put this game on their Christmas wish list - the fact you

could choose how you played.

Undertale was released on September 15, 2015. The game is

about a child who fell down a hole inside of Mount Ebott

and meets a strange, mythological mix of creatures called

(you guessed it) monsters. While some monsters just want to

take over the area known as the “Underground,” some simp-

ly want to make peace and save everyone from their fallen

past. That past included a great war between humans and

monsters, where the humans won, and the monsters fled to

the “Underground,” where they were forgotten until the

child fell into their realm. There is also a barrier restricting

anyone from leaving the realm until they have the strength

of a few human souls!

King Asgore, ruler of the “Underground,” desires seven

souls so he can become a god and take back the world that

could have been his. You, as the player, can choose to be

totally on board and try to stop the fighting throughout the

story (Pacifist Run) or you can try to take out everything in

sight (Genocide Run). The special part of the game is that

you can choose through the storyline what you want to

do. Everything affects the game, whether it is talking to a

character or attacking someone; it gives you lots of control.

But most people took it for granted after a while, and that

shouldn’t have been the case. The game is only $9.99 on

SteamTM and is very highly rated. The game won many

awards, such as The Game Award for Games for Change in

2015, BAFTA Games Award for story in 2016, The Game

Award for Best Role Playing Game in 2015, and The Game

Award for Best Independent Game of 2015. In addition, the

game has many special features throughout its many areas,

and players will enjoy all the personalities that the game

characters have.

If you want more, play the game yourself! If I tell you more

I just might spoil something major!

ing very hard and could not be more excited for this

STEAM Students Shine in Western PA Showcase By: Mr. Stagl

On September 27th, Mr. Kozy and Mr. Harris took a group of students to the

Circuit Center in the Southside of Pittsburgh. These students included our

brightest STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathemat-

ics) minds and members of Mr. Harris’ Robotic Club. Carlynton was one of

nearly 30 schools who were showcasing their skills and projects.

Mr. Kozy stated that each school had a table with key student works, and the

highlight of the Carlynton table was Stephanie Bonifield’s Robotic Dog

name “Marvin”. The robotic dog has blinking eyes, can wag its tail, and

even shakes hands with people who stop by.

Despite the individual accolades Stephanie received, Mr. Harris was quick to

point out, “There is no ‘I’ in ‘TEAM’”, and the district has a great program

growing around Robotics and STEAM.

Make sure you stop by the Cougar Collaboration Center during the year to

see everything that’s cooking at CHS, and we will surely report more as it

happens!
