I trust everyone had a safe holiday season and that Santa was good to you.

We are starting the home stretch of the Moose Year. We have three months to “Create Some Interest” and complete the “Mission Possible” to ensure we have a gain in active

members on April 30, 2012. The $0 Application Fee should help us on our quest. We also must contact those members who are in the expired and dropped status and encourage them to renew their priceless membership. Contact those who have been terminated and invite them to rejoin. If we all work at retaining our members we will definitely have that gain. Together we can accomplish anything.

Your Executive Committee along with many others from Florida, as well as across the country, attended the Making Change Seminar in Las Vegas. Although the results were not exactly what I thought they should be, there were a few good ideas shared. We hoped that those who attended would come up with new and different ideas to help our Fraternity grow. The camaraderie between the members however was great. I overheard many conversations indicating that we are all in the same boat and we all have many common issues whether here in Florida or in Alaska.

We will be hosting Supreme Governor Wes Crowder in March. He will be in Merritt Island March 14th, Vero Beach on March 15th, Palm Beach Gardens March 16th, and wind up in Lauderdale Lakes on March 17th for St. Patrick’s Day. Make your plans to be at one of these locations to meet the highest elected official of the Loyal Order Of Moose.

We will have Bobble Heads for sale at each location that Wes will autograph for you.

Now is the time to be making your plans to attend the Mid Year Conference to be held in Orlando April 19th – 22nd at the Rosen Plaza. We will have two great visitors, Gary Urwiler and Carolyn Allen. We may also have some visitors (spies) from Pennsylvania with us. So come on out and let’s show them some great Florida hospitality.

I know it is early but I do want to remind you that the International Convention is in our backyard this year in downtown Tampa. Our goal is to have every lodge represented at the convention.

Thanks for all you do and see you in Orlando.

Fraternally, Jerry Monk Regional Manager

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

I hope everyone had a great Holiday, spending time relaxing with family and friends. We are in the final quarter of our Moose Year and we have a lot of work to do if we are to realize a gain in active members by April 30th. The waiving of the application fee helped us before and it should “CREATE SOME INTEREST” and help us now. Retention is the key to our future success. We must all work harder to keep our members active and involved. If we wait until a member is on the expired or dropped lists it is often too late. We must make more effort, with new members and long time members alike, to involve them in lodge life; make them feel wanted, needed and appreciated. Retention should be viewed not as a program but as an attitude and the way we should treat each other; an every day way of conducting business. Every member has the potential to drop from our rolls unless we give them a reason not to. So we have to ensure that our lodges maintain a full schedule of fraternal and social events, geared to our particular members’ wants and needs and that we continually treat all of our members as valuable assets to our Moose family.

Supreme Governor Wesley Crowder will be making some visitations to Florida Lodges in March. Please make an effort to get to one of the host lodges and show him that we appreciate him being here and that we are proud Florida Moose. Mid-Year Conference is just around the corner and as you know, will be in Orlando at the Rosen Plaza. I look forward to seeing you all there for some work and a lot of fun and fellowship. Lastly, the International Convention will be held in Tampa this year and this should allow our Association to attain 100% attendance by all our lodges. It will be hard for me to accept any excuses from a lodge not being able to have someone get to Tampa, so let’s make our plans now!Fraternally,David J. SmithF.B.M.A. President

This Issue of the Courier marks the end of my fifth year as Editor of the Florida Bermuda Moose Association’s Publication. In the past five years, thanks to those of you who have contributed information and articles for publication, the Courier has earned an Honorable Mention and two Second Awards for General Excellence in the Moose Journalism Awards, which are awarded at the International Convention each year. I will continue to strive to make our Publication the best in the Fraternity and want to thank the Association for giving me the opportunity to do so.

I would like to thank all contributors for their past submissions and encourage those of you who have not submitted as of yet, to do so. Please note that if you submit an article which was published in a local newspaper that I need the name of the publication and the date it was published so that the proper source can be credited. A Happy and Healthy New Year’s wish to everyone.

I neglected to mention in the last Courier that there had been some donations by lodges to Special Olympics and Safe Surfin' in the amount of $25. I want to point out to those lodges that in order to be qualified for the Premier Award that donations of $100 are required

for both Special Olympics and Safe Surfin', so that means that those lodges will need to send at least $75 more to meet the $100 requirement.

Well, the new District Presidents have had two meetings to start of their year and results have been mixed but unless they are serving their second year it usually takes a couple of meetings to get things rolling. We will be having a Full Board meeting at Moosehaven, January 28, 2012 and will discuss various ideas and proposals for the remaining fiscal year.

By the time you read the Courier we will have attended

the "Making Changes Seminar" that was held in Las Vegas and will have discussed many of those items at our meeting.

Remember the $20 application fee has been waived so go get those members and while you are getting new members let's get some of those members that have been dropped either re-enrolled or current with their dues.

I have included in this Courier the Men's Registration form and Meal Registration form to be used for the Midyear Conference that will be held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando, April 19-22, 2012. The phone number for reservations is 407-996-9700 and if you have any problems, ask to speak to Dorian Diaz, Convention Services Manager. I am looking forward to a great Mid-Year in a new location in a great hotel. The men and women will be in the same hotel with no walking between hotels. The parking fee for the Rosen Plaza has been waived and rooms are $95.00 this year. Let's make this a record turnout just like we had at our Annual Convention last October. Remember, Governors and Administrators must be represented at the Conference.

Scott Cushing, FB.M.A. Secretary

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATION SECRETARY

Come on Florida coworkers - I know we are the best! Let's prove it and start "Creating Some Interest" in this great f r a t e r n i t y . S i n c e t h e International Conference will be held in Tampa this year let's show the other states how it is done! We want to be NUMBER 1.

Sign 2 new or former members between now and April 30, 2012 and your next year's dues are free, and to make it easier for our new applicants the application fee is being waived from January 1, 2012 through April 30, 2012. Share the Moose story with your friends, family and co-workers. Not only will you be spreading the word about our fraternity and what it stands for you can get your dues paid for the next year. Seems like a win-win situation to me!

It will soon be time for our Mid-Year Conference in April. Don't forget one of the requirements for your Award of Achievement is to have representation at both the Annual Convention and Mid-Year Conference of the Women of the Moose.

It is that time of year when we need to be thinking about the election of Officers. If you have not done so, please download the WOTM "Election of Chapter Officers Handbook". This will give you all of the information you need to have a successful election.

I hope you are having a successful chapter year and don't forget - be happy!

Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould (third row, middle) poses for a photo with 99 Mooseheart children, Mooseheart staff as well as staff from the St. Charles Super Target following a two-hour shopping spree for the children provided by Gould's "The Goulden Touch" Foundation.

MOOSEHEART, Dec. 14 - There wasn’t any mad dashing through the aisles of St. Charles’ Super Target store as 99 Mooseheart children embarked on a Christmas shopping spree. (That could be explained, in part, from some firm instructions from the adults in their lives, to not go madly dashing through the store.) But looking into the elementary and middle school students’ eyes gave away the inner thrill of holiday shopping as they began a two hour spree made possible by Chicago Bears placekicker Robbie Gould and his “The Goulden Touch” foundation. “I’m excited to get the opportunity to work with Mooseheart,” Gould said. “It’s awesome to have the kids come and have a lot of fun today. It’s fun to put a smile on a kid’s face, and it brings a lot of cheer to myself and everyone involved with The Goulden Touch.” The amount involved was pretty staggering. A total of $13,200 was available, thanks to contributions by The Goulden Touch, the Chicago Bears’ “Bears Care” charitable organization, Target and a personal donation made by Gould himself. This meant each of Mooseheart’s elementary and

middle school students was allowed to spend a bit over $120. “I was thinking (it would be) along the lines of $20 or $25 per student,” Mooseheart Executive Director Scott Hart said. “(Gould), through his generosity and fund-raising, has ballooned that up to around $120 per child. It’s a great Christmas gift to Mooseheart in general.” Each group of student shoppers was helped by school and campus staff while Gould continuously moved through the store from child to child, making some recommendations and chatting with the students. He graciously agreed to every autograph request, signing everything from napkins and pieces of paper to footballs, shirts and jerseys. “Every kid has been so polite and every kid has been so excited to go and shop and it’s awesome to see them shop for every family member and to shop for themselves,” Gould said. “It’s really a unique opportunity. You think you are touching their lives . But they are all thinking about their families and everyone around them. You’re touching more than just 99 kids’ lives who came here today.”

Some of the older Mooseheart shoppers, middle-schoolers mostly, knew who Gould was, and were aware of the team-record 57-yard field goal he had kicked in an overtime losing effort against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and they wanted to meet and talk to a professional football player. Some of the younger children were just happy to be around the person who was allowing them to do some shopping. At least one of Mooseheart’s youngest children just wanted Gould to twirl around, because she was in the mood for some in-store twirling. “It makes losing a lot easier,” said Gould, who'll turn 30 later this month. “If you put it in perspective -- you’re pretty bummed after losing 13-10 after having a 10-point lead with five minutes to go. But at the end of the game, I knew I had this opportunity ahead of me. It’s just a game, at the end of the day. We love to win - but you can’t win them all. And there’s so many other opportunities where everyone gets to win and have a lot of fun.” Hart said that the holidays can be a tough time for some of the children who live at Mooseheart, whether they are preparing to return to their guardians when the semester break begins on Friday or whether they will be staying on campus through the holidays. “Christmas can be a difficult time for our children,” Hart said. “Some of them have lost family members and are trying to overcome some serious life challenges at a young age. This really lifts the spirits and lightens the mood and gives the children something else to focus on instead of loss . This is a day of huge gain for our kids.” The shopping spree put smiles on a number of faces at the Super Target too. Store manager Kristen Barbaro had her staff ready to assist and opened a pair of dedicated checkout lines so the children could make their purchases. “My entire team has talked about how this really brings the spirit of Christmas alive,” Barbaro said. “We’re really excited to be a part of such a great event for kids who are in need. It’s great to have Robbie Gould here and we’re happy to be able to give back to the community in this way.” The nature of the shopping and the questions the children were asking touched the Target staff. Boys spent time shopping for nail polish while girls were

seen looking for cologne while everyone went to the jewelry counter, at least to look. “One thing that’s really special is that these kids have been shopping for their family and other people that they know,” Barbaro said. “I saw very little of shopping for the kids shopping for themselves. That kind of touches your heart, when you think about the spirit of Christmas and the idea that these kids don’t have a lot and yet, rather than buying for themselves, they are buying for others.” Gould said there is a fair amount of charitable work done by his teammates. The Goulden Touch has been in existence for 10 months. “We really don’t do it for the PR,” Gould said. “A lot of the guys in the locker room do it because, somewhere along the way, someone’s helped them get to where they are today. It’s always great to give back to the community that’s so embraced all of us, not only in our professional careers but our families as well.” The shopping spree was the first time Gould had met children from Mooseheart, but it may not be the last. He said he wants to visit the Mooseheart campus and meet with the students, possibly talking the football team. There’s also a chance Monday’s shopping spree could become more than a one-off event. “I have a passion for helping youth -- not only in this area, but back home,” said Gould, who is a native of Jersey Shore, PA. This is the future of our country. It’s important that they understand to make the right decisions and to walk away from the wrong decisions, to take advantage of opportunities that you have and work hard.” Hart said furthering the relationship between Gould and Mooseheart would be wonderful, from a Mooseheart perspective. Certainly, 99 children were having a great time with their shopping spree. “This would be something special, if we could make this an annual event for our children,” Hart said. “I know Robbie’s having a great time and I know our kids are having a blast being here.”

POMPANO BEACH, Florida - A life size, costumed Tommy Moose appeared Oct. 10 in time to present adorable Tommy Moose stuffed animals, along with coloring books, to Deputy Mike Johnson, BO and Lt. Gorge Rossi, Pompano Beach Fire Rescue. These gifts from Women of the Moose may be small, but they serve a very important purpose. “We do a lot of wonderful things for the community every month of the year but our gifts of Tommy Moose to the police and fire departments have great significance as these gentlemen can tell you,” said Sallie Fisher, Senior Regent of Pompano Women of the Moose. Deputy Johnson jumped right in, saying, “Here’s a case that comes to mind. We arrived in a home to find the mother murdered, adults crying and children clutching each other in a corner. A member of our team handed a Tommy Moose to each of the children and you would be amazed at how these little stuffed toys helped those kids deal with their fear and their pain.” Lt. Rossi nodded his head in agreement and then said, “We see a lot of traumatized children in our business and it’s amazing to see how their faces change when we hand them a Tommy Moose animal. They calm down as we try to get control of the situation.”

EMS, Division Chief Michael Howl added, “Kids in distress, who can’t seem to be comforted or calmed down, do so before your eyes when you hand them a Tommy Moose. This little stuffed animal gives them something to hold on to and they quickly focus on him.” There were other touching stories about Tommy Moose animals at the Moose Lodge, 3321 NE 6th Terrace, preceding the meeting of the Women of the Moose. Senior Regent Sallie Fisher shared a little history of this group. “The Women of the Moose began in 1913 as a unit of Moose International. There are now 400,000 women members in 1,600 chapters in 50 states and Canada. We all support Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Mooseheart is a child city and school, located on 1,000 acres 40 miles West of Chicago. It is home to children and teens in need. Moosehaven is a 70-acre continuing care retirement community in Jacksonville. It’s a wonderful place with its own hospital for those of us who have been members for 15 years or more and who wish to retire there. We just had a couple from our Lodge move in. They love their living quarters and all of the activities and wish they had retired there sooner.” The Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 2157 has over 400 members with about the same number in Women of the Moose. Linda Pelts, Recorder says, “The members range in age from 30 to 80. We have couples and singles. We have dinner and music every Friday and Saturday evenings. The women do the cooking and we all do the eating, dancing and enjoying the music.” Some of their year round activities include a Fund raiser and a Christmas party with gifts and music for the Dynamos. They also collect clothing for the Broward Outreach Center, school supplies and backpacks for local school children, a Thanksgiving basket to a needy family, books for Pompano Beach library and needed items for service men and women. Thank you Women of the Moose for the good work you do.

LOYAL ORDER OF THE MOOSE

Article submitted by Pete Mallory Photograph by Shalee Mallory

FT. PIERCE, Florida - Ft. Pierce Lodge #248 held their Children's Christmas Party for the children in their neighborhood on December 17, 2011. Chairman Fellow Brother Tom Kulscar organized one heck of a party, with the help of Don Kern, who set up and Lodge members who financed the party. The children arrived at the Lodge at 3:00 pm excited to see Santa Claus. Pizza, juice drinks and cupcakes were served to them while they waited. At 3:30 pm Santa arrived to a standing ovation. Santa then took a seat next to the Christmas tree and the gifts. Santa (Dave Fonseca) and his two helpers, Mary Waudby, who came in for the event from Baltimore Maryland, and Mandee Kulscar called each child's name and each was given a card and two gifts. Pictures were taken of the children with Santa by Jerry and Bonnie Jilek. It was a wonderful day for the seventeen children who attended.

LODGE HOSTS CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN

CAPE CORAL, Florida - Cape Coral Moose Family Center 2199 held it’s Children’s Christmas Party on Saturday December 10, 2011. Event Chairman Carla Galloway, along with two of the local firefighters, had the following to say after the party was over. “What a GREAT Christmas party put on by our Lodge this year! We were proud to volunteer at the Christmas ornament table. It was a pleasure to see the children's happy painted faces opening their gifts and welcoming Santa on the fire truck. They kept busy watching the magician, decorating their own cookies and making their own ornaments for their families. The music was festive and the food was great. It was amazing to see over 120 children and families together at such a successful function. Thank you to the Lodge staff, members and volunteers for working so hard for the kids. A special heartfelt thank you is sent out to the Lehman family for their food donations.” Article and photographs submitted by Henry J. Heroux

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida - On Sunday December 18th, children and grandchildren of members gathered at Palm Beach Gardens Lodge 2010 to await the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. While they waited the Women of the Moose Chapter 1471 made sure they had

plenty to keep them busy. They decorated their own gingerbread men and were treated to hotdogs, chips and sodas.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived at noon and handed out stockings and gifts to all the children and stayed for plenty of photographs.

DEBARY, Florida - The St Johns River Moose Legion 227 Committee of the Four Townes Moose Lodge in Debary was giving away turkeys and hams for the holiday season. What's the catch? You had to be the closest to the center of the target at their Sunday morning charity turkey shoots. Ron Hagan's, a snowbird from Pennsylvania, enjoyed a morning shooting match in Debary and he's not bad at his chosen sport. "1 go all over (to be in turkey shoots). l won three times last week and three times the week before," said Hagan's. Hagan's wins add up to six turkeys in his freezer. Turkey shoot rules are pretty much universal. Set up roughly a dozen targets, line up about a dozen people with .12, .16 or .20- gauge shot guns and give them the signal to fire. The Four Townes Moose Lodge supplies the ammunition to make things fair. Then it comes down to the best eye and the straightest shot. “The Four Townes Moose Shoot goes for as many rounds as the people who show up want to shoot," said shoot coordinator Billy Johnson. "Some people spend a lot of money on this sport. It's like any other sport, you've got people who travel around (from turkey shoot to turkey shoot)," said Moose member Al Caime.

The cost is $2.50 per round. Proceeds collected go to a variety of Moose Charities. Four Townes Moose Lodge is located at 201 Benson Junction Road, DeBary. Charity Turkey Shoots are held behind the Lodge Sunday mornings at 8 am.

PALM BAY, Florida - Sailfish Moose Legion 197 held it’s Winter Celebration at Palm Bay Lodge 2311 December 2, 3 and 4, 2011. This was Palm Bay’s first time hosting the Celebration and they did a fantastic job! All three days were packed full with activities, raffles, entertainment and great food.

On Sunday, International Moose Legion Ambassador Fred Scott was in attendance as seven new Moose Legionnaires (pictured at left) were Conferred. Scott also presented the Sailfish Board of Directors with a certificate of appreciation from Moose Charities for their contributions to the Endowment Fund. Just prior to the Conferral a surprise guest arrived - Santa himself! By the way it was discovered that Santa is indeed a Moose Legionnaire. Pictured at right are F.B.M.A. President David J. Smith, Santa (Past Governor Ralph Curtis) and International Moose Legion Ambassador Fred Scott.

FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

LIVE OAK, Florida – December 28, 2011 –WORK, STUDY, PLAY and PRAY… Growing Up the American Way!

The Youth Ranches believes that for young people to grow into healthy and productive adults, it is important they are taught basic principles needed for success. We have narrowed these life lessons into four basic areas we call the Work, Study, Play and Pray Philosophy. All of our programs weave this philosophy into the daily life on campus and use it to help build character and healthy self esteem in our children.

Everyone must learn the value of work if they are to be successful in life. A strong work ethic is learned through having regular chores as well as various jobs while growing up. Each Youth Ranches child is expected to keep their room clean, do their own laundry and help with chores around the cottage. They are not paid for these chores but expected to do them as a part of the cottage family.

Along with their chores, each child has a specific job on campus. In order to get a job, they must fill out an application and interview with their potential boss. Jobs are located at a variety of worksites around campus, and can include farm work, maintenance, food services, grounds keeping, mechanics or office work. In their job, youths earn spending money but more importantly, they learn work skills and how to work with a boss and co-workers.

Youth Villa girls can work with the TiAnViCa Riding Academy which is located on the Bartow Campus. The girls are responsible for feeding and grooming the academy horses. TiAnViCa Riding Academy provides recreational therapeutic riding for individuals with disabilities.

Ranchers can work at the Sheriffs Ranches Enterprises thrift stores where they can gain experience in customer service, stocking merchandise and handling money professionally.

As the Ranchers mature, they are encouraged to seek employment opportunities with local businesses. Ranchers have gone on to work at restaurants, retail stores and other entry level jobs.

The Mission of the Florida Sheri ffs Youth Ranches is to prevent delinquency and develop strong, lawful, resilient, and productive citizens who will make a positive contribution to our communities for years to come. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches was founded in 1957 and operates four residential programs: Boys Ranch, Youth Villa, Youth Ranch/Safety Harbor, and Youth Ranch/Bradenton-Sarasota; two camping programs: Youth Camp and Caruth Camp; and other family services around the state of Florida. If you would like more information on how to help support the kids in our care, please contact Frank Kenny, Donor Relations Officer at 1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www.youthranches.org.
