PREVIEW celebrationPi ed m o nt N ew n a n H o s pita l's

On Saturday, March 24, we’ll be opening the doors for a sneak preview of the new

Piedmont Newnan Hospital, which will open in May. We’re inviting our community and the entire

Piedmont family to be among the first to see this amazing new facility. Bring your family, kids

and neighbors to enjoy exclusive tours of the building, our formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, live

entertainment and refreshments. Offsite parking will be available in the parking lot behind

Dillard’s at Ashley Park. Shuttles will run between the Dillard’s parking lot and the new

Piedmont Newnan Hospital for the duration of the event.

Visit newpiedmontnewnan.org for more information and details on the completion

of the new facility.

There’s just something about a motorcycle. Espe-

cially a big, loud one with lots of shiny chrome and

a powerful engine. It can carry a man’s thoughts a thou-

sand miles down the road to an adventure yet unknown

but often dreamed about. The destination itself is of sec-

ondary importance. You’re “on the road” now – you’re

on a machine! You feel the wind blowing across your

helmet, and the vibrations of well engineered moving

parts. There are smells of ignited fuel and the spent

exhaust of passing motorists mixed with the aroma of

leather. It’s almost as if God has reached down and

plucked you out of the pressures and stresses of a respon-

sible life and placed you on the “road to uto-

pia”, at least for now.

Of course, we don’t all like motorcycles. But

every one of us has a dream in our soul of

something we long to do – an activity which

will carry away the cobwebs of our daily rou-

tine and move us to a place of passionate sat-

isfaction. It could be an ocean cruise, a visit

to a special museum, a cross country drive,

or a ride on the American Orient Express.

Perhaps you would like to create a garden, take up painting, or music. And it could be

that you just want to walk down to the creek, by yourself, and fish. Indeed, most of us

are limited by health, time or money, but we can all learn to enjoy the dreams of our soul

within the “valid” limits of our abilities. I think that our numerical age is of a lesser im-

portance. It’s the good health with which we have been blessed and the positive attitude

which we have chosen for ourselves.

Ed Williams, of Newnan, is a good example of going beyond the limits of age. At 81,

he still enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle regularly. (Read about Ed in our

“What’s in Your Garage” article in this week’s Shopper.) Ed still has the good health

and the positive attitude to want to continue the things he likes doing.

So, let’s not allow life to pass us by when we’re not looking! Perhaps we are waiting for

the right time, enough money, more energy or retirement. Let’s do those things we can

do now, which we enjoy. We can always “adjust for age” later!

JoeAs always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shop-per an interesting and effective advertising medium.

“… every one of us has a dream in our soul of something we long to do – an activity which will carry away the cobwebs of our daily routine and move us to a place of passionate sat-isfaction.”

Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and

their families as you provide companionship and a brief respite for caregivers. You will not need

to provide any medical or physical care to the patient,

just a caring heart and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours

each week to allow the caregiver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life

in many ways, and we will make sure you are

“Dirt Cheap”Whoever said that about dirt obviously wasn’t a gardener. A good plant-

ing bed properly prepared is not cheap! It’s labor intensive initially; and there is a considerable cost in-volved in good top soil, compost, fertilizer and mulch. However, once the sacrifices are made the rewards are great.

The first step is to select a site with the right amount of sunlight for the plants to be grown and with drainage.

Soil should be like crumbly chocolate cake ideally. Heavy clay soil sticks together in a ball like playdough.Sandy soil falls right through the fingers. Amendments could be peat, compost, or manure and possibly some sand. The soil should be able to hold moisture, but it must also drain well. Raised beds can avoid tree roots and poor drainage. Plants need both moisture and oxygen.

When the site has been chosen, cleared, and checked for good drainage then the soil can be tested. Sam-ples can be taken to the County Extension Service for testing or kits can be purchased at garden centers.

It’s important to know the pH of the soil in the planting bed. PH is the measurement of acid or alkaline range in the soil. The scale is 1 - 14. One is most acid and 14 most alkaline. Seven is neutral. Most plants like a pH of 6 to 7. Add lime to “sweeten” the soil (make it more alkaline). Add sulphur to make the soil more acid (sour). In this area the soil is usually heavy clay and acid. Some plants need a more acid soil – like blue-berries, ferns, and broad leaf evergreens. Where soils must stay damp or wet constantly choose plants that thrive in those conditions. Flag iris, ferns, and astilbe like wet or damp soil. Check out library books for more information. It’s so much easier to choose the plants that already like the conditions where you want to plant.

All plants need food just like people do. The primary elements are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Secondary elements are cal-cium, sulfur, and magnesium. Micro nutrients are iron, zinc, copper, boron, manganese, and molybdenum. Sounds like a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. Plants also need carbon, oxygen, and hydro-gen. These are obtained from water and air.

Prepare the planting bed by amending good top soil as needed. Dig the bed (or rototill) to about 12 inches deep. Add about three inches of compost and till thoroughly. Don’t use too much fertilizer. It will burn the plants or hinder growth. Wait to plant. Water well. Be sure you have eliminated all weeds by pulling, spraying, pre-emergence, or putting down plastic 2 to 3 months to kill them (remove). Some people prefer organic products such as cotton seed meal, fish emulsion, gypsum, sulfur, bonemeal, etc. A cover crop can be planted and then tilled in at season’s end.

Don’t work the soil when it is wet! Don’t walk on your prepared and tilled bed – it compacts the soil. Wait to plant until the danger of a freeze is past and the soil has warmed – usually sometime in April. Don’t forget to water regularly if it doesn’t rain. Consider drip irrigation to conserve water, or punch holes in plastic jug bottoms and place beside plants to add water. Plant in early Spring or in Fall.

Newnan’s Ed Williams is getting a little forget-ful lately. I suppose he’s forgotten that most men of his age don’t continue to do many of the things they have always enjoyed. Ed forgot he couldn’t do all the work in his immaculate yard, so he does it anyway. He forgot that men of his age don’t usually attend the Panama City “Bike Week” twice a year and enjoy his beach house on a regular basis, so he still goes. But most of all, Ed really forgot he couldn’t ride a heavy, Har-ley Davidson motorcycle anymore, so he contin-ues to enjoy that too!

Over the years, motorcycles have come and gone in Ed Williams’ garage. In 1965, he moved to Newnan to be the Southern Regional Manager for Douglas Battery with charge over six districts. Ed was riding an old Harley “74” then, and after his retirement in 1991, he had a little more time to enjoy the sport. In 2009, after trying several types of bikes, Ed purchased a beautiful, new, Harley Davidson “Heritage Softail Classic”. “This will probably be my last motorcycle”, he told me. “This one has softer springs and a good place to put your feet – it’s comfortable.” A few years ago, Ed joined Scott Wilson and Terry Davitson for a ride, through the mountains, from Newnan to Roanoke, Virginia and back. “We rode 1,1oo miles and enjoyed some beautiful scenery”, Ed remembers.

Ed’s son, Steve, also enjoys the sport. For six years, they have attended the “Bike Week” celebra-tion in the spring and fall at Panama City together. His daughter, Leigh Brown, just celebrated

her 35th year with Bank of Coweta in Newnan where she is a commercial loan officer. Really? They must have hired her as a baby!

So, at age 81, Ed Williams is still “rolling down the road” enjoying the adventure of cruising on a big, fast motorcycle. It’s not always our nu-merical age, but the good health with which we have been blessed, and the positive attitude we have chosen for ourselves.

Keep on rolling, Ed!

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Most people have heard about the McDon-ald’s hot coffee spill case, but virtually no one has any information on the actual facts of that case.

An elderly woman suffered third degree burns from McDonald’s coffee which, under its corporate wide policy, was held significantly hotter than industry standards solely to insure corporate profits. In that case, the jury awarded 2.9 million in punitive damages, equivalent to two (2) days of McDonald’s coffee sales. The jury also awarded the woman $200,000.00 in compensatory damages for her injuries, but it was later reduced to $160,000.00 because she was found twenty percent (20%) at fault for the spill.

This case has been cited as an example of a runaway jury. Unfortunately, the actual facts of the case make it no laughing matter.

The elderly woman’s injuries included third degree burns (the most severe) to her groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. She was hospitalized for eight (8) days, during which time she underwent skin grafting and debri-dement treatments (the surgical removal of dead tissue). The woman had sought to settle her claim with McDonald’s for $20,000.00, but they re-fused. McDonald’s also had documents which showed that approximately seven hundred (700) people were burned by the coffee between 1982 and 1993. Some involving third degree burns similar to this woman’s. McDon-ald’s own quality assurance manager testified that a burn hazard exists with any food served above 140º. Their coffee was kept hot at 185º.

HBO is currently running a documentary called “Hot Coffee” which presents the facts regarding this McDonald’s case. If you get the opportu-nity, I recommend you watch this movie and you can decide for yourself whether or not a jury of her peers did their duty.
