When the Mansour brothers, Ellis and Charlie, founded Brothers Ltd. men’s wear in downtown Newnan in the mid 1960’s , it quickly became a

popular place to shop. They carried good quality, fashion-able clothing and we didn’t have to drive to Atlanta to get it. Many of us are still customers, as my generation sort of “grew up” with the store.

Having been raised in a family of merchants, they knew how to run a business, and always provided personal, friend-

ly service. From my first visit in the 60’s, and continuing through last week, I have always been greeted by name and with a smile. The Mansour family really know how to make each person feel like their most important customer, and that has made us all want to keep coming back.

Over the years I have collected fond memories of Brothers. When trying on pants, Ellis and Charlie referred to me as “The Seatless Wonder”. (It must have been true – my mother used to say the back of my pants looked like a family had just moved out!) While in the store many years ago, Charlie suggested I consider purchasing a hat I was admiring. When I told him I thought it would look laughable on me, he said, “that hat will look great on you – no one will laugh”. When I tried it on, he was the first one to break out laughing! Needless to say, I didn’t buy the hat. It was always interesting when Ellis would wait on me. He is a great conversationalist and would usually spend time with me discussing any matter of interest. Al-though I was nobody from nowhere, it made me feel like he cared – and he did. Connie, knowing how much I like bow ties, has tried several times to teach me to tie one. She made it look easy, but when I tried it at home, I failed miserably! Thanks for trying, Connie, but I’ll continue wearing the pre-tied ones from Brothers. And it’s not just my fond memories, but of many other men and women who have enjoyed being served by the Mansour family over the years.

The Bible states, “there is a season for everything”, and in the next few weeks, after almost a half century in business, Brothers Ltd. will close. Younger brother, Charlie, passed away last year and has been very much missed by all who knew him. Ellis has decided this is now the time to take a much deserved retirement and we wish him well. I believe a family is not necessarily defined by a business, rather the success of the business is built on the character of the family. The store will soon be gone, but the Mansours will continue to be a vital part of Newnan, committed to their family, their community and their church.

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help

us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effec-

tive advertising medium. 770-254-1421, fax 770-254-8283, or e-mail [email protected]

Todd Bodine

Keeps on Trucking

Todd Bodine is the reigning champion of the Camping World Truck Series. In

the past six seasons, he has won two champion-ships and never finished lower than fourth in the season standings.

Though he is coming off a third-place finish at Darlington Raceway on March 12, Bodine faces challenges in defending his 2010 championship. It remains a struggle to secure enough sponsor-ship for his Germain Racing Toyota.

“We’re not even close to set,” said Bodine. “Tire Kingdom ... I think they’re going to do four more (races). Valvoline’s going to do a couple, and now we have one with Georgia Boot. We’ve still got a lot of races that we need to get sponsorship for.

“It’s going to get better. I keep saying that since the end of last year, but it’s going to get better. I

think, by the end of the season, you’re going to see a lot of things happening with sponsors, and a lot of these corporations are going to start cut-ting loose with some of their marketing money and swinging it our way.”

Bodine, 47, is the youngest of three racing brothers. Unlike Geoff and Brett, Todd has never won at the Sprint Cup level, though he has fin-ished in the top five seven times. With 21 career Truck victories, Bodine ranks fifth all-time.

“So far, our luck has just been horrible,” said Bodine of the current season to date. “Our philos-ophy is to go every week, do the best we can and what happens, happens. You can’t control every-thing. We’re pleased with our performance.

“The state of the series is pretty obvious. We’ve got probably the best field of trucks that we’ve ever seen in the history of the series, and we have a lot of younger kids coming in. The experience level may be down a little bit, but we’ve got a lot of kids who have a lot of talent and a lot of fu-ture and a lot of promise. The state of the series is strong ... really strong.”

The winners of the season’s first three races -- Michael Waltrip, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne -- do not compete for the championship. Bodine takes little consolation in that.

“We’re here to win, not to finish second,” he said.

President Theodore Roosevelt to visit Newnan

by Coweta Arts Tidbits ~ The Successor To Newnan-Coweta Arts Council News Releases

Composed By: Forrest W. Schultz 770-583-3258 [email protected]

The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society will present “An Evening with Presi-dent Teddy Roosevelt” as portrayed by Mr. Joe Wiegand. Mr. Roosevelt will ap-pear at the Wadsworth Auditorium, 25 Jef-ferson St., Newnan this Thursday, March 24th at 7 p.m. He will speak on his life and careers. Admission will be $5 (students

$3). Tickets will be available at the Male Academy Museum, 30 Temple Av-enue, Newnan and Scott’s Bookstore at 28 South Court Square, Newnan.

Mr. Roosevelt, born in 1858, was a distinguished Harvard graduate, a cattle rancher, colonel in the U.S. Cavalry, Governor of New York, and Vice-President and 26th President of the United States. As President, he was responsible for building the Panama Canal, establishing 230 million acres of national parks and forests, and building a modern navy.

Mr. Joe Wiegand is probably the premier portrayer of Theodore Roosevelt. He holds a political science degree from the University of the South, Se-wanee, Tennessee, is a Harry S. Truman Scholar and is an active member of the National Association for Interpretation. While on a 50 state tour commemorating Theodore Roosevelt’s 150th birthday, he performed at the White House and at Roosevelt’s birthplace in New York City. More infor-mation on Mr. Wiegand is available at www.teddyrooseveltshow.com.

For information concerning the presentation, call 770-251-6245.

The Teddy Roosevelt Show website (www.teddyrooseveltshow.com) is worth visiting for its useful information; it has this to say about Joe Wie-gand’s performances: Joe Wiegand is entertaining audiences nationwide with his reprisal of President Theodore Roosevelt. As a one man theater show, Joe’s T.R. shares stories full of adventure, laughter and inspiration. As. T.R., Joe adapts unique presentations for each of his audiences and is perfect for banquets, celebrations and school assemblies.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Mitral Valve Prolapse Rarely a Health Threat

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About 40 years ago, when I was in my 30s, I was examined by a famous heart doctor who went over me with great care and concluded I had mi-tral valve prolapse. He put me on medicine, which I have taken to this day. He also insisted I take antibiotics before dental work. That doctor died, and my new doctor, quite young, says I don’t have mitral valve prolapse and that I don’t need medicine or antibiotics before dental work. He saw that I doubted him, so he had me get an echocardiogram. It showed no mitral valve problem. I still wonder about this. I can’t accept that my former doctor was wrong. -- J.P.

ANSWER: The mitral valve regulates blood flow from the upper left heart chamber -- the left atrium -- to the lower left heart chamber, the ventricle. When the ventricle contracts, it pumps blood out of the heart. Simultaneously the mitral valve closes to prevent backflow of blood into the left atrium. Mitral valve prolapse means that the mitral valve balloons upward into the left atrium during heart pumping and might leak blood.

With new knowledge of how this valve works and with new equipment such as echocardiograms (sound-wave pictures of the heart), a clearer picture of the mitral valve is obtainable. Most people who have a ballooning valve are not considered to have a serious medical condition. In only a handful of these people does a significant leak of blood occur. Those are the people who require treatment, and those are the people who take antibiotics before certain dental procedures.

Your doctor wasn’t wrong. He was a victim of the inadequate knowledge of that era.

Heart-valve disease is quite common. The booklet on it describes the more preva-lent varieties. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 105W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Nan Johnston The weather is warming up and I keep hearing that real estate sales are picking up. Making a great first impression is imperative in having a faster sale for

top dollar. Below are my top 10 exterior selling tips to help anyone, whether

their house is on the market or not.

❶ Walk outside and enter through your front

door. Most home owners don’t use their front entrance on a regular basis, they use their

garage entrance, so it’s easy to forget about the

appearance of the front of the house.

❷Sweep down any cobwebs, dust, pollen, etc.

❸Check your door bell button.

You wouldn’t believe how many homes I see

that have a broken button and the owner doesn’t know it.

❹Replace your welcome mat with a fresh one

and add some fresh cushions to your swing, rockers or chairs.

❺Pressure wash and paint any unsightly siding or trim work.

If a buyer sees that the outside has not been maintained, they will

automatically start wondering what else hasn’t been maintained.

❻Pressure wash the driveway, side walk and front steps.

❼Replace tired shrubs, flowers and landscaping mulch.

Remove any pots with dead plants and flowers.

❽Remove any of the “decorative” items in the flower beds and yard.

These are personal items and a buyer needs to be able to imagine

themselves building a life in that yard.

❾Clean the windows. It’s the best way to let in natural light.

Remember that a buyer spends several minutes looking around

the front entrance while an agent is trying to get the mls key

out of the lockbox. They will start forming opinions immediately

and if you’re selling, you want those opinions to be positive.

Grandma Jo’s Stew

This crockpot recipe is a favorite of my grand-

sons. They love all the vegetables and meat

chopped into tiny pieces. I love that it sim-

mers away while I play with the boys.

16 ounces lean round steak,

cut into 36 pieces

2 cups sliced carrots

1 cup chopped onion

1 1/2 cups chopped celery

2 cups diced raw potatoes

1 cup frozen peas

1 (10 3/4-ounce) can

reduced-fat tomato soup

1 (8-ounce) can cream-style corn

2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1. Spray a slow-cooker container with butter-

flavored cooking spray. In prepared contain-

er, combine meat, carrots, onion, celery, po-

tatoes and peas.

2. In a small bowl, combine tomato soup,

corn, parsley flakes and black pepper. Stir

soup mixture into meat mixture. Cover and

cook on LOW for 8 hours. Mix well just before

serving. Makes 6 (1 1/2 cup) servings.

• Each serving equals: 237 calories, 5g fat, 20g

protein, 28g carb., 336mg sodium, 4g fiber;

Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Meat, 1 1/2 Starch, 1

Vegetable.

Strawberry Ice Cream

Making your own ice cream is easier than you think -- especially when it doesn’t require a fancy ma-chine. This delectable four-ingredient treat whips up in 10 minutes flat and freezes into scoopable sweetness in an hour. A serving of labor-inten-sive, custard-based strawberry ice cream has 282 calories, 12 grams of saturated fat and 134 times the cholesterol of our luscious dessert, which has a mere 70 calories per serving and less than 1/2 gram of saturated fat. So go ahead: Spoon up some more.

1 pound frozen strawberries1 cup 2 percent plain Greek yogurt1/4 cup sugar1/2 teaspoon vanilla extractStrawberries, for garnish

1. In food processor with knife blade attached, pulse 1 cup strawberries until finely chopped. Transfer chopped berries to large metal bowl.

2. In food processor, puree yogurt, sugar, vanilla and remaining strawberries until smooth. Trans-fer to bowl with strawberries; stir until well-com-bined.

3. Cover and freeze about 1 hour, until firm but not hard. Garnish with strawberries. Makes 7 (1/2-cup) servings

Tips: You can substitute plain low-fat yogurt for the Greek yogurt. When testing this recipe, we found both worked well, but we preferred Greek yogurt’s creamier texture. We also tested this in three different freezers and found that the freez-ing time varied depending on freezer make and model. Begin checking your ice cream at 1 hour, and continue freezing if you prefer a firmer tex-ture.

• Each serving: About 70 calories, 1g total fat (0.4g saturated), 1mg cholesterol, 10mg sodium, 14g to-tal carbs, 1g dietary fiber, 3g protein.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Throughout the years I have been asked what is the best way to find the right lawyer. This week’s article will briefly discuss some of the ways to find an attorney than can assist you.

As with any business, word of mouth is the best advertising. A personal recommendation from a family member or friend is a great place to start. Also seek out people who had similar attorney needs. It helps to find out who has done well for other people.

Another important thing to think about when picking an attorney is his or her specialty. Make sure you hire the lawyer you need. In other words, if you need a criminal defense lawyer don’t hire an estate lawyer even if it’s an old family friend (but they can be valuable in referring you to the right lawyer).

The Internet is also a valuable resource and can provide you helpful in-formation about the firms and attorneys in your area. Most attorney’s web sites discuss their area of practice, case results, and client testimonials. A few attorney’s web sites, including my firm, have video which lets you see and hear from the attorneys you are considering. Also, some web sites also have links that might provide you additional information for the type of answers you are seeking.

The phone book, while still a resource for phone numbers, does not provide as much depth as is found online. The phone book will also pro-vide you with attorney practice areas.

Once you’ve decided to meet with an attorney, ask if they have a free consultation. If you are prepared to meet with an attorney, have a clear idea of the questions you need to ask. Also, the attorney can advise you about the type of fee associated with your case. Fees differ for different types of legal matters. For example, a criminal case might have a fixed fee, a business problem might have an hourly fee with a retainer, and most personal injury cases would be on a contingency fee where a portion of the settlement or verdict, if received, would go to the attorney.

Shrubs

The ArmchairGardener

Who wouldn’t appreciate having a minimum maintenance land-

scape? Which plants can provide this while performing a wide variety

of uses? Shrubs are the perfect solution. They can offer flowers, berries,

fruits, showy fall colors, fragrance and texture.

Shrubs can be used in many ways. It’s a matter of choosing the right

shrubs for the right place. They can control erosion, defuse light, pro-

vide shade, offer privacy, muffle noise, screen unsightly views, define

spaces, direct foot traffic, serve as a wind break, create a background

for perennials and annuals., as well as many other useful functions.

Choosing the best shrubs for your own landscape doesn’t have to be

confusing. Consider these several factors when you are deciding which

shrubs to select: is it hardy in your area?; will it grow well in your type

of soil?; what is its mature height and width?; how much sun or shade

does it require?; does it fit into your landscape plan?; how much water,

fertilization, and pruning is required? The most important consider-

ation of all is — do you like this plant — because there are multiple

choices for the same need.

Flowering shrubs are a great solution for gardeners who no longer

have the physical abilities

to do lots of yard work.

They are also excellent

for the home owner who

loves flowers but has very

little space to garden.

Busy, younger adults ap-

preciate combining land-

scaping with shrubs and

having flowers, fruits and

berries to add beauty and bring inside the home to decorate.

Some examples of these are: blooms - azaleas, camellias, hydran-

gas, rhododendrons, roses, forsythia, hibiscus, philadelphus, flower-

ing quince, viburnum; fragrance - tea olive, gardenia, daphne, laven-

der, rosemary, osmanthus, lilac, banana shrub, Carolina all spice also

known as sweetshrub; fruits - crabapple, blueberry, cranberry, pome-

granate, quince, rose hips; berries - viburnum, callicarpa, holly, pyra-

cantha, mahonia, nandina, cotoneaster; varigated leaves - some variet-

ies of holly, osmanthus, daphne, acuba, eleagnus, gardenia, eyonymus,

yucca, boxwood, pittosporum.

If you have a diseased plant and you would like help determining the problem, bring a photograph or the part of the plant that is affected (sealed in a zipper bag so we don’t spread the disease) for analysis.

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce was a part of the community team supporting the recent E-SPLOST referendum. We studied the costs and the benefits of E-SPLOST and carefully concluded this was the best possible option available to support our excellent school system. We now would like to thank the voters of Coweta County for braving the elements and taking the time to vote “Yes” for E-SPLOST. Of course, we always wish that more registered voters would visit the polls, too, but for those that did, we sincerely thank you. We also want to thank the Coweta County School System for the wonderful job they do. Our children are receiving excellent classroom instruction and opportunities to continue their education at many different levels. Our school system is succeeding under some of the most trying conditions with eroding financial support from traditional sources. You also have been efficient and conservative in your fiduciary responsibilities. Well done! The Chamber respects the concerns of those opposed to extending the E-SPLOST method and hope that you will see positive benefits come to Coweta as a result of passage. Your thoughtful and well-stated arguments were appreciated. We are very fortunate to live in a community that can conduct itself in a civil manner while debating the merits of these types of referenda. Ours is a county of informed, responsible and good people and we pledge to work hard at the Chamber to do our part to keep it this way. Again, thanks to all who voted!

Cat Washes Paws in Water Bowl

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an 11-year-old black cat, “Andie,” who uses her litter box and then right afterward goes over to her water bowl and puts her paws into it. I scold her when she does it, but it doesn’t help. I have to change her water several times a day. How can I get her to stop doing this? -- Betty, via e-mail

DEAR BETTY: Scolding won’t help, unfortunate-ly, because Andie either finds this act to be plea-surable or a relief from discomfort.

First, there are a few breeds of cat that actually like (or at least tolerate) being around and in wa-ter -- including swimming. Andie might have this trait, or she might not. She may just like doing it and has developed a habit of standing in the water bowl immediately after litter box use. If this is the case, you can try placing a tray or bowl of water near the litter box and guide Andie over to that af-ter her toilet, then empty the water until the next time. Or, as soon as Andie gets into her drinking bowl, gently lift her out -- no scolding -- and take the bowl away for a while. From there on, pick up Andie just before she gets into the bowl, put her down gently, and feed her a treat. Do this enough times and she just may “get it.”

Another issue that’s just as likely is that Andie’s paws are uncomfortable after litter box use. Check her paws, especially between the pads; are there nicks or irritated areas? Is litter embedded be-tween the pads? Whether you see any problems or not, try a couple of different litter brands to see if it makes a difference. Also, talk to Andie’s vet about her behavior.

Pet Owners Doing More For Pets’ Teeth

(NAPSI)—Pet owners have become increasingly aware of the importance of pet oral health and its effect on whole-body health and well-being. While daily tooth-brushing is the gold standard in oral care for pets as it is for humans, less than 1 per-cent of dog owners are compliant.

Instead, many turn to treats with dental ben-efits, known for being more enjoyable for pets and most convenient for owners.

A new study shows that 77 percent of dog own-ers gave treats they believed to provide oral care benefits last year, with 30 percent increasing such treat giving. Yet up to 60 percent of them don’t realize that their dogs may have progressing oral disease. Part of the problem is lack of veterinary care. Also, most treats that claim to clean teeth lack the research to prove it.

“Veterinary dentists only trust a fraction of treats to be effective at cleaning teeth and safely protecting them,” says Dr. Jan Bellows, veterinary dentist, diplomate and incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. According to Dr. Bellows, it’s important for pet owners to un-derstand which dental treats work effectively to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup and are safe for pet teeth. “Some dental treats, especially real bones, are notorious for their low nutritional val-ue and their hard textures, which can contribute to tooth fractures,” Dr. Bellows says.

Many consumers are accustomed to seeking out toothbrushes and toothpaste that carry the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. And dental standards are equally as important for pets and their oral health.

Fortunately, there’s a governing body that confirms if dental treats work, using third-party testing. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is similar in nature to the ADA but is applied to pet products.

Through stringent research and review, the VOHC determines which products on the market are effective. Greenies® Canine Den-tal Chews was the first brand of dental treats to receive the seal for plaque and tartar con-trol and has been a pio-

neer in dental treats that meet VOHC standards.

“Walk into any pet store and you will find doz-ens of treats that claim to clean teeth,” Dr. Bel-lows says. “While it’s easy to make teeth-cleaning claims, formulating a treat that significantly protects teeth is difficult. The VOHC seal is there to help veterinarians and pet owners recognize which products are proven to work.”

For more information about the Veterinary Oral Health Council, visit www.vohc.org. For further pet dental chews information, visit
